A Fresh Perspective On Dispute Resolution from The Trusted Team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation

It is safe to say that not many lawyers specialize in alternative dispute resolution and mediation when it comes to resolving client disputes. What the team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation offers is certainly different,  and we are eager to share what they do, why they get the thumbs up from Trusted Saskatoon and what makes them stand apart from the crowd!

The first thing to note is that the goal at Panko is NOT to go to court!

This is a rather surprising goal for a law firm, so to understand why it helps to learn how the company came to be in the first place. We sat down with Dominique Panko, a mediator at the company, to find out more about the history, the people and the philosophy of the firm.

Dominique's mother, Charmaine Panko is the founder and principal lawyer at the firm. To say Charmaine is a trailblazer is an understatement. She was invited to study law at the University Of Saskatchewan and eagerly commenced her studies in 2000. Charmaine was a mature student and she had already started her family. Understandably she found the workload combined with mothering nine children intense, so she petitioned the University to allow her ( and other mothers) to study part-time. They agreed, and in 2005 Charmaine graduated with a Batchelor of Law (with distinction). After law school, she joined Miller Thomson, where she was a collaborative lawyer, mediator, arbitrator, and trainer, before leaving to start her own company, Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation in 2015.

When Dominique was sharing her mother's story,  it became clear that Charmaine has a talent for problem-solving,  and that she actively seeks out unique ways to overcome objections and tackle roadblocks encountered. Now a mother of 11, Charmaine is an entrepreneur overseeing a successful family-owned and operated Saskatoon law and meditation firm, where Dominique and 3 of her other children also work.

A Commitment To Doing Things Differently

"We will not go to court- there are ways to go your own way that aren't so hard and ways that don't have to be a road to misery. Our goal is to get former adversaries to work together" - Dominique Panko
When asked what being trusted means to the team at Panko, Dominique replied that confidentiality was paramount, clients have to be able to trust them and they must trust the process - to do that they need to feel safe.
The process is very different from what people are used to when struggling with disputes in the emotional areas they deal with. They specialize in mediating family law, divorce and separation, wills and estate disputes. They offer holistic support and their team is invested in finding a way to an amicable resolution for their clients. Hear what their peers have to say...

" As a fellow attorney, I'm scrupulous about who I send my friends and family to. Charmaine is a seasoned attorney who works to achieve the very best results without destroying families. Charmaine's training in mediation and collaborative divorce help her to guide families through the transitions of separation and divorce without the high cost (and emotional toll) of litigation." Carrie Luelling

Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation has several pathways to achieve a successful outcome, including:

Collaborative Law
In this process, each person involved has their own specially trained lawyer. Both lawyers commit to resolving all matters between the people involved without fighting in court. Sometimes in this process, the lawyers might suggest the inclusion of other collaborative team members such as separation coaches, child consultants, or divorce financial experts. The video below explains the process in detail.

" Collaborative Law was able to work around my busy schedule while guiding me on the proper sequence of everything involved in a separation. There were quick responses to any and all of my questions. When it came time to have a face-to-face meeting, I found it to be a comfortable experience. Which was nice, as I was nervous about mediation, to begin with. I found everyone in the office to be very professional." A Harrison

Mediation
A process using a neutral third party to facilitate negotiations and conversation for people in disagreement to reach a mutually satisfactory solution.

Kitchen Table
Working through the agreements that need to be made in an informal way, perhaps through conversations at your kitchen table.

Do It Yourself Separation / Divorce
They can teach you the steps to ensure your separation story is a successful one by taking the CommonSense Separation Course

" We refresh our mission statement every year to ensure it remains relevant. Our role is to empower people through difficult transitions - we go where ever there is conflict and we approach challenges with a fresh perspective. We give our clients tools that they can use for the rest of their lives" - Dominique Panko, Mediator

The team at Trusted Saskatoon is extremely proud to promote and support the wonderful team at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation. It is clear that they are passionate about helping people find a better way. The situations they are involved with are amongst the most painful, emotional and challenging times in their clients' lives. Charmaine, Dominique and the Panko team authentically care, they are actively involved in offering new ways and they are passionate about petitioning for much-needed change in family law and the justice system so it works better for all involved, but especially for the children!

Trusted Saskatoon team welcome Saskatoon Funeral Home, your Trusted Saskatoon Funeral Home

The Trusted Saskatoon Directory Team is thrilled to share the many reasons we are proud to welcome Saskatoon Funeral Home to the Trusted Community of locally owned businesses operated with integrity. They are your Trusted Saskatoon funeral home.

A History Of Professionalism, Outstanding Service & Compassionate Care

For over 110 years, the Saskatoon Funeral Home has responded to the needs of Saskatoon people of every faith and every walk of life. The late William A. Edwards founded the business in 1910, the start of a proud history as Saskatoon's longest-serving locally-owned, family-operated, full-service funeral and cremation provider to trace its roots to the beginning days of our city. Saskatoon Funeral Home is a family-operated, full-service funeral and cremation provider. They offer a full range of services, including pre-arranging, traditional and nontraditional services for all faiths and philosophies.

The initial location was 114 - 2nd Ave. South ). William soon moved the business to a large house at 412 - 22nd St. East (now Saskatoon Square).  The current downtown location is a distinctive mid-century modern building. It is worth noting that SFH is the only Saskatoon funeral provider with 24-hour onsite attendance and guardianship for loved ones.

Meet The Edwards

The Edwards family is steadfastly committed to compassion, dignity, integrity and professional excellence.

The Founder of Saskatoon Funeral Home, William A. Edwards, was born in Ontario in 1886. He apprenticed in the profession under his father and at 20 years of age came west working his way to the coast and back to Saskatoon, where he established the business of W.A. Edwards Funeral Director in 1910.  His son,  Arnold led a long and meaningful career in funeral service both locally and provincially. A life member of the Saskatchewan Funeral Service Association, he is recognized as always subscribing to the highest ideals and ethical standards in the profession, serving as Instructor and Examiner and Chairman of the Public Information Committee. The business is in the SABEX Hall of Fame Award and was the recipient of The Community Involvement Awards from SABEX and ABEX. Arnold also received the Rotary Golden Wheel Award for Vocational Service.

A Fourth-Generation Family Business That Gives Back

Arnold's son Bill and his wife Eleanor Edwards have deep roots in Saskatoon, and they are known for their generosity and sense of community. That's why the couple was honoured with the joint title of CTV's 2011 Citizen of the Year. They've contributed to the city in many ways through not only their businesses but by volunteering their time to various groups and organizations. Bill coached various sports teams and Eleanor volunteered with organizations such as Meals on Wheels. They also created bereavement support organizations, such as the Walk of Memories, Children and Grief, and Motherless Daughters.

Eleanor and Bills son Morgan Edwards joined the family business in 2006 and he represents the fourth generation in the family business. Morgan is the general manager, funeral director, and embalmer. Bill's siblings Brenda and David also serve on the Board.

To the Edwards Family and Saskatoon Funeral Home, business and community are intertwined. It has always meant a real commitment to the betterment of the community and its people on an economic, spiritual and social level. They believe their success is not achieved through the success of one individual but by the combined efforts of many over a long period of time.

We can certainly attest to the success of their collective efforts, as the clients we spoke to as part of the Trusted verification process had nothing but wonderful things to say about the Saskatoon Funeral Home team.  The consistent theme was that the staff truly care and do their best to make an awful and emotional time less stressful.

"Morgan Edwards handled our mother's funeral with so much compassion and dignity. The immediate family was unable to attend due to Covid-19 restrictions, but he made every effort to include us in the service" - Verna T
As we do our due diligence and look at reviews as part of our process we found this one on Google that really summed up what we were hearing from everyone we spoke to.

"A wonderful help and support for our family during the planning of my fathers celebration of life. He was able to adeptly navigate a complicated family dynamic, create space for everyone to be heard and pulled together the service in record time. He also offered me a shoulder to cry on and instinctively knew what I needed to hear to start processing my grief.
Thank you from the bottom my heart for your kind and compassionate support. We are so lucky to have your support."
During the pandemic, gathering limit restrictions that were in place for months meant many  ' traditional funeral gatherings' were not able to take place. They announced early on that Saskatoon Funeral Home was waiving all fees associated with digital viewing as they prepared for more families to use the streaming service during funerals. They also have a robotic device called telepresence— a technology on wheels with an attached Ipad.  A family member can control the device and talk with funeral guests and even potentially give a eulogy.

In an interview with CTV, Morgan Edwards said

“We have the tools in place to accommodate and we want to still feel like we are doing something to help our friends and neighbours. We have a duty to commemorate a life and that shouldn’t be taken away by the times,”

Visit their website to learn more about pre-planning a funeral and grief support, as well as the traditional funeral and cremation services that they have to offer. They are always there to help. Trusted Team Brags About Backyard Living Center, Your Trusted Saskatoon Hot Tub Store!

The Trusted Saskatoon team is thrilled to brag about our newest Trusted Saskatoon outdoor living and recreation partner, Backyard Living Center, your Trusted Saskatoon Hot Tub Store!

Sheryl and Matthew Harras are the proud owners of Backyard Living Center, a local, family-owned and operated Saskatoon hot tub store. They are passionate about helping citizens of Saskatoon and the surrounding area find the best hot tub, or outdoor furniture to meet their needs without the high-pressure sales tactics. They really do care and go the extra mile to find out what will work best for you and your family, whether it’s a new hot tub, supplies or chemicals, or just honest advice and tips. They also have amazing customer service, as many of their customers have raved about their personable attitude and dependability. When dealing with Backyard Living Center, you’re not dealing with just any staff members… you’re personally dealing with the owners… and they are owners who care!

Sheryl suffered from painful back issues after several unfortunate vehicle accidents. After seeking relief in many places, much to her surprise, she found that hot tub hydrotherapy really helped! She was never interested in hot tubs, but when one came with a new house the family purchased she decided to give it a try, and here she is years later a hot tub convert who has excellent advice to share!

This couple is striving to be the best in the hot tub industry. So after gaining years of knowledge and expertise with a few other companies, and noting both the good and bad of the industry, they feel confident that they can provide unparalleled service and professionalism along with friendly and honest advice, to those looking to purchase a hot tub. Not only do they have a great selection of Canadian-made hot tubs and spas, but they can also look after your service and repair needs, hot tub and pool water care, and even hot tub and pool financing. In addition, they are introducing luxury outdoor furniture this coming spring!!

“Remember, they don’t just sell hot tubs and spas, they are here to help you with Emotional Wellness, Physical Wellness and Relational Wellness. Did you know that hot tubs are hydrotherapy for your entire body, and can help with headaches, sports injuries, back pain, knee pain, tight muscles and sciatica?"

We are so fortunate that Sheryl, Matthew, and their daughter Sara moved to Saskatoon to establish and grow their business, and we are thrilled about their decision to join our Trusted Saskatoon community. They saw Saskatoon as the perfect place, with the right demographics, the right economy, and the right people to create their dream business. But no matter where you live in Saskatchewan, the team at Backyard Living Center will try their best to assist you.

Community Support Is Important

Making a difference in our community in various charitable ways is a real heartfelt mission of Backyard Living Center. Above is a recent photo of owners Matthew and Sheryl, and below is a photo of a local hero Owen and his Mom. Thanks to their customers for shopping local, the company was able to give back to this young local hero by donating funds so that Owen could get a fin for his amputation and enjoy some swimming lessons.

As part of our Unique Trusted verification process, where we speak to real customers and suppliers, we continually heard the same positive comments about Sheryl and Matthew and the feedback was nothing short of excellent.

“I heard about Sheryl and Matthew from someone else, and when she had mentioned they were going to open up their own store I waited to deal with them, and I’m so happy I did! They have gone above and beyond my expectations, from purchasing, to installation to solving my water and ph problems, I have not experienced any problems whatsoever. I would definitely rate them a 10/10 and have already referred them to friends and family.” - Ryan McIntyre, Rural SK

“I first met Sheryl Harras when she was employed as the Sales manager for a very successful and long established Pool and Spa company based in BC. I myself have been associated with the Pool and Spa industry for 30 years, so I was surprised that after just one meeting I was immediately impressed with her level of professionalism and knowledge. For the next 2 years we developed a mutually beneficial relationship. Her enthusiasm and salesmanship ensured that her store soon became one of my largest customers and still is to this day. More recently, when Sheryl advised me that she was planning to move to Saskatoon and start her own Hot Tub retail store, I was fully committed to help in any way possible. I know with her track record, it will only be a matter of time before Backyard Living Center becomes one of the most successful Hot Tub stores, not just within Saskatoon but within all of Western Canada. H2O Spas is proud to partner with Sheryl and Matt Harras and they can be assured of our support as they continue to grow their business.”
Sincerely, Mark Owen, H2O Spas

The Trusted Saskatoon team is thrilled to brag about our newest partner Trusted Saskatoon partner. Breathe Better Indoor Air Quality Specialists as Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, Duct, and Vent Cleaners!

David Dram has been involved in the furnace and duct cleaning industry since 2014 and he is passionate about what he does, especially the benefits he brings to the health and wellness of his customers. After gaining knowledge and expertise with a few other companies and learning both the good and bad of the industry, he recognized it was time to go out on his own. He wanted to do things differently, with his own vision and purpose, and a goal to provide unparalleled service and professionalism.

We all know there’s always "a guy or gal that can do it cheaper," but we all know when you compromise on price, you generally compromise on quality. So David wanted to change that perception and offer honest and friendly service, great quality work, all at a fair price for Saskatoon consumers.

Breathe Better Indoor Air Quality is truly a family-owned and operated business, as David’s wife Becca is the other co-founder, and she works extremely hard behind the scenes looking after the paperwork, accounting, invoicing, reviews, and social media. On top of running a growing and successful business, they have four wonderful children, ages 8, 6, 3, and 6 months, so things are extremely busy around the Dram household!

David is also the Commanding Officer of the #300 Fisher Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, located in Biggar, and has been involved as a CAF officer for 10 years, taking command last October. Although David was born in Flin Flon, Saskatoon has been his home since childhood and he strives every day to make a difference with indoor air quality and personal health for residents and businesses of Saskatoon and the surrounding area.

We are so fortunate to have David and Becca raising their family and growing their business in Saskatoon, and we are happy about their decision to join our Trusted Saskatoon community. Now our team will do what WE are most passionate about… Promoting and spreading the word about this locally owned family business and sharing the news about the honesty, integrity, and long-term approach to business they are committed to! You can definitely trust them for your residential or commercial projects, from furnace, duct, and vent cleaning, they clean old homes, businesses and new builds, they are the professionals to call in an emergency or just because it’s time to thoroughly clean your home.

Local House Is Your Trusted Saskatoon Online Retail Mall That Delivers Locally!

Local House Joins Trusted Saskatoon In The Saskatoon Speciality Retail Category

The Trusted Saskatoon Directory team is thrilled to brag about our newest Saskatoon partner in our Saskatoon Specialty Retail category. We would like to welcome and introduce you to Local House Your Trusted Saskatoon Online Mall

Local House was founded in 2020 by Mike and Chuck Le Page, who themselves are local retail business owners with stores in both Saskatoon and Regina. When COVID-19 shut down nearly everything in March of 2020, Mike Lepage recognized a unique business opportunity. Scrambling to buy a birthday gift for his fiancée, Lepage reached out to several local businesses but found it very tedious to organize the purchase and delivery of products.  Knowing there could be a better way to navigate this time-consuming approach, Mike and his father, Chuck, reached out to Trusted Marketing Services, and together, they started the complicated task building on the idea of Local House and bringing it to market with a brand and custom online shopping platform.
“I kept wishing there was a marketplace and delivery system for local business,” Mike Lepage explains. “I had been sitting on the Local House URL for a while, so I did some research on the concept, and there wasn’t anything quite like it yet.”

What Is Local House And How Does It Compete With Amazon?

Michael LePage wants to give local retailers in Saskatchewan a digital platform that can compete with the likes of Amazon.
Local House is more than just an e-commerce store, it’s a local ecosystem and essential a local online shopping mall that allows small local retailers to gain access to new sales opportunities, compete with foreign/out of market retailers stealing local market share and extend their brand reach to new customers in new places near where they operate. Retailers set up Local House stores for free and they can upload their products directly into the store. The development team spent many hours working on allowing Local House to work in hand with other well know and established major e-commerce platforms, such as Etsy and Shopify to make it more accessible for businesses and merchants who have already invested time and money in their own online stores. Now merchants can simply integrate with their existing online store software at the click of a mouse. The full checkout takes place on Local House and the retailers only pay if they make a sale- so it’s a win-win!

Local House Delivers Same Day Or Next Day to Saskatoon Shoppers

Convenient, same-day delivery or next-day delivery ( dependant on order time) on most products on Local House, means you can shop at your convenience, and get items delivered directly to your door. If your order total is under $25 delivery costs $7.00. If your order is larger than $25 delivery is $3.50. Some vendors also offer free delivery if a minimum purchase amount is met.

Local House is an amazing and innovative example of a local business whose mission is to support other local Saskatoon businesses and provide solutions to Saskatoon consumers, which is the foundation of why we started the Trusted Saskatoon directory!

Trusted Saskatoon warmly welcomes Mike and the Local House team to the Saskatoon directory of excellence in the Saskatoon specialty retail Category and we are proud to give them the ‘Thumbs Up’!
