The Auto Body Experts at Superior Auto Body Give Tips on How to Avoid Wildlife Collisions in Saskatchewan

Avoiding Wildlife Collisions

Part of living in Saskatchewan means dealing with Wildlife on and around the roads. There is a serious human cost to this issue – on average 327 people are injured and 4 are killed each year by wildlife collisions. While encountering wildlife is inevitable, especially as we travel to and from lake land there are some ways drivers can reduce their risk of a collision with our wildlife.

Know the Peak Times

The time of day and year can seriously affect wildlife activity around roads. Be extra alert for wildlife in May and June when animals venture towards roads to like road salt. During mating season in late fall and early winter animals are also very active. Year round the peak times for animal collisions are dawn and dusk, so be extra careful when driving in this time frames.

Always be Alert

Scan from shoulder to shoulder while driving to check for animals approaching the road. If you see an animal on the side of the road, slow down and pass by cautiously. If you encounter an animal that has ventured on the road, slow down under control and honk your horn to attempt to scare the wildlife away. Avoiding slamming on your brakes and swerving, as this may cause you to lose control and veer into a ditch or oncoming traffic. As with most traffic safety tips, maintaining a safe speed for the weather conditions is important for avoiding wildlife collisions.

When the Collision is Unavoidable

Sometimes collisions with wildlife are unavoidable even if you take every precaution and remain alert at the wheel. In these circumstances, try to remain calm. From the experts themselves, here is a list of tips that will help in this situation:

  • Aim your vehicle at the spot where the animal came from, not where it's going
  • Try for a glancing blow rather than a head-on encounter and let up on your brake just before you collide. This causes the front of your vehicle to rise slightly and reduces the chances of the animal going through your windshield.
  • Hitting an animal can be an extremely traumatic experience. If possible, move to the shoulder and turn on your hazard lights. Take a moment to regain your composure and then assess the damage to your vehicle.
  • Do not approach the animal, especially if it appears to be wounded. Injured animals can be extremely dangerous.
  • Call the police or your local RCMP detachment if there are human injuries or significant damage to your vehicle. If the damage is less severe, you may continue driving and follow regular SGI claims reporting procedures.

Auto Body Experts at Superior Auto Body Saskatoon Give Gravel Road Safety Tips

As we all know, living in Saskatchewan you're bound to drive on a gravel road sooner or later. Make sure you're prepared properly! Here is a few tips from the experts themselves at Superior Auto Body:

Gravel roads are a part of life in Saskatchewan. They all have 1 thing in common: they can be dangerous. On average in Saskatchewan, rural municipal and roads on First Nation communities are the scenes of nearly 7,200 crashes each year. These collisions result in more than 1,000 injuries and 32 deaths annually. You can help protect yourself and your loved ones by following some basic gravel road safety tips:

Slow Down on Gravel Roads

Even the best-maintained gravel roads have rough sections and loose gravel that require lower speeds. Gravel roads without posted limits are 80 km/h zones, although it’s important to remember that this speed is for ideal conditions only. Your tires are another important reason to slow down. They have less traction on loose gravel, which can increase your risk of a collision when you accelerate or turn a corner. To get the most out of your tires, accelerate and brake gradually to avoid skidding. Also, try to avoid swerving to miss animals or objects on the road. Your vehicle may slip or even roll over. Remain calm if your vehicle begins to skid. Take your foot off the accelerator and declutch or shift into neutral. At the same time, look where you want to go and steer in that direction. Once you have regained control of the vehicle, resume driving at a lower speed.

Stay on the Tracks

When driving on gravel, it’s a good idea to drive in the tire tracks already on the road. This holds true even when there is only 1 set of tracks in the road’s centre. If you climb a hill or meet a vehicle travelling from the opposite direction, be prepared to slow down and pull over as far to the right as possible. Large trucks or farm implements may even require you to stop. Be careful when pulling over to the right because you risk slipping into the ditch if your tires go off the packed surface. If you find yourself drifting off the road, don’t slam on the brakes. Slow down gradually and then steer back onto the road.

Back Off

It takes longer to safely stop on gravel roads, and dust can greatly decrease your visibility. Even under the best conditions, it’s best to allow at least 6 seconds of following distance on gravel. If the conditions are less than ideal, you need to leave an even bigger gap between your vehicle and the 1 ahead.

Light It PP

Whether you’re enjoying an afternoon jaunt or making a twilight trip home, your headlights should always be on, especially if you’re driving on gravel. They help other drivers see you sooner than they otherwise might, ensuring you and all your precious cargo make it home safely.

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body shop SGI tip on deductible payment plans

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts

Here they share a tip on Deductible Payment Plan:

You can use the Deductible Payment Plan to finance your deductible over a period of 10 months

We understand that coming up with the deductible can sometimes be tough on your budget.

It doesn't matter how your vehicle was damaged - collision, vandalism, hail or theft - if you have a deductible to pay, and you're eligible, you can access the plan.

You're eligible for the plan if your personal vehicle is both:

  • registered in the LV or F classes
  • covered by basic licence plate insurance

You're not eligible for the plan if:

Getting signed up

When you first report your claim to SGI, your adjuster will go over the program with you and let you know if you're eligible.

When you take your vehicle to SGI to be appraised, you'll get an application form to fill out. You can do 1 of 2 things:

  • You can fill out the form at that time and attach a void cheque.
  • You can give the completed form and void cheque to the autobody shop of your choice when you take your vehicle to be repaired.

Payment schedule

Your payments will start once your vehicle is fixed.

When you pick up your repaired vehicle, you must pay the autobody shop a down payment of $100.

For the balance of the deductible, a payment will be automatically deducted from your bank account over a period of 10 months. There is no interest charged, but a one-time administration fee of $30 will be charged with your first payment under the plan.

Maximum number of claims under the plan

You're allowed up to 3 claims through the plan at a time, as long as your account with SGI is in good standing on previous claims.
