Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts at Superior Share What You Need to Know About Safe Railway Crossing

Superior Auto Body Ltd Saskatoon has been in business since 1961, and they are an SGI ELITE Autobody shop and have been SGI accredited since 1982. There are many reasons they have so many loyal longstanding clients from all over the city, but mostly it is the small, personal touches that they offer to people who have been unfortunate enough to require their services. They offer newer model courtesy cars and vans for clients... and to help out, they also pick up your vehicle and take it to your SGI appointment for you and deliver the courtesy car to you at home. In our latest accident prevention tip, they share advice about safety at railway crossings in Saskatchewan.

RAILWAY CROSSINGS ARE HIGH COLLISION ZONES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BE SAFE

IN A COLLISION WITH A TRAIN, THE TRAIN WILL ALWAYS WIN!

When driving your vehicle around Saskatoon and area roads, it’s easy to think you’re the king of the road. But when that road intersects with railway tracks, be prepared to give up your crown. There are so many rail tracks crisscrossing our province and many of them do not have safety barriers.

Trains are massive columns of speeding metal that can take more than a kilometer to come to a complete stop. As a driver, you need to respect their size and power or risk serious consequences.

Vehicle collisions with trains result in an average of 12 injuries and 2 deaths each year in Saskatchewan. The human cost is tragic, particularly because collisions with trains are entirely preventable.

SASKATCHEWAN RAILWAY CROSSING ISSUES

It’s a dubious distinction for Saskatchewan; a disproportionate number of railway crossings that are judged to be the most dangerous in the country. Of the 500 railway crossings that Transport Canada has assessed as being among the most dangerous in Canada, more than 60 are in this province. Put another way, with only about three percent of Canada’s population, we have an unlucky 13 percent of the crossings on this list.

Transport Canada says this list reflects a number of elements including not only the number of collisions, but also the characteristics of the crossings including:

  • Volumes of rail and vehicle traffic,
  • The type of trains,
  • The number of tracks,
  • Vehicle and train speeds and,
  • Whether these crossings are in rural or urban areas.

Mixed in too, is information from a database of “rail occurrences” maintained by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, including “accident and incident” data.

RAILWAY CROSSINGS – SUPERIOR SAFETY TIPS FOR SASKATOON AND AREA DRIVERS

Be alert and be prepared to stop

As you approach a crossing in the middle of Saskatoon or in rural Saskatchewan – whether marked or uncontrolled – remember to slow down and look both ways. You must stop if you see a train coming since they always have the right of way.

Never try to race through a crossing before a train arrives

They aren’t required to slow down at crossings and their speed can often be difficult to gauge. Trying to save a few seconds by beating the train simply isn’t worth the risk. Regardless of what you drive, in a collision with a train, the train will always win. To reinforce this point, many railway crossings are equipped with electronic warning devices. Their message is simple: stop your vehicle and wait until it’s safe to proceed. Don’t needlessly put yourself in harm’s way by ignoring flashing lights or driving around barrier arms. Even if you make it safely over the tracks, a hefty fine could be waiting for you on the other side. Tickets for failing to obey a stop signal at a railway crossing start at $220.

Exercise caution around railway tracks even if you don’t see a train approaching

A common mistake is stopping on the tracks while waiting for traffic ahead of you to proceed. Not only do you risk a collision with a train, but your vehicle could be struck by the barrier arms if they’re activated. To avoid these situations, stop well behind the barriers and wait until you have enough room to clear the tracks completely.

Be sure to look for multiple sets of tracks

They are indicated by a small numbered sign under the traditional railway crossbuck. Don’t proceed after a train has passed until making sure another isn’t approaching on a different set of tracks.

Watch for other vehicles stopping in front of you

Half of all crashes occurring at crossings are rear-end collisions where the lead vehicle is slowing down or stopping. Pay particular attention to school buses since they are required to stop at all uncontrolled railway crossings. Flashing amber lights will be activated on the bus, giving you plenty of warning before it stops.

Staying safe near trains isn’t complicated. Rather, it’s a matter of knowing the rules and obeying them to ensure that you arrive at your destination safely.

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts at Superior Share Why Colour Matching is Vital To Repairs

We offer newer model courtesy cars and vans for our clients... and to help out, we will also pick up your vehicle and take it to your SGI appointment for you and deliver the courtesy car to you at home. In our latest accident prevention tips, we share the reason correct paint matching is vital to auto body repairs.

When your vehicle is involved in an accident, you want to have it repaired as close to new condition possible. One of the most technically challenging parts of auto body and collision process is paint matching and the final finish.

We have all seen auto bodywork rolling around the streets of Saskatoon that is not up to par, and it often looks worse than the original accident. If the entire panels have been replaced, there is often a noticeable difference between the new panel and the rest of the car because of mismatched paint. It is the job of the team at Superior Auto Body to make sure your vehicle looks as good as new, and this is a challenge as paint matching is one of the most difficult skills to master.

When your car or truck was newly painted at the factory, the entire body was painted at the same time from the same batch of paint. This ensures that all the parts of the car are EXACTLY the same colour and shade of paint. Paint matching is an art, and only an experienced and accredited auto body shop can accurately match new paint to an original finish. All automotive paints have codes specific to the colour, but there are thousands of variations and shades. Additionally, colour variations from original are inevitable because of normal aging. When a car has been on the road for a few years, there is a normal fading of the color. Even if a new batch of paint is mixed to factory specifications, there may still be a noticeable difference, and this is where the skill of the body shop comes in.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE EXACT COLOUR TO MATCH?

There is a tag, usually inside the door jamb, with code numbers and one of these codes is the paint color for your car. This number is used to correctly match the paint should a repair ever be necessary. The number of colors available is staggering, even basic colors such as black and red have dozens, if not hundreds of different shades. In addition, the older the vehicle, the more difficult it may be to match the paint. At this point insurance coverage has some influence on the repair work. If a door panel on an older car needs to be repaired after a collision, a good body shop should be able to match the paint to your satisfaction. There are blending techniques that allow new paint to lightly overspray old paint to achieve a transition that is not noticeable. In some cases, it may not be possible to match the paint due to weathering and fading, and it may be necessary to paint the entire side of the car.

Any accident is an unpleasant experience that you want to put behind you. One important step is having your car repaired properly, and the best way to do that is to use an experienced auto body and collision repair shop like Superior Autobody; a repair shop that warranties their work, will repair the hidden damage that may not be apparent for a month after the accident and stands by their work.

Our team at Superior takes pride in their workmanship… as we always say, “When we get through it’s just like new”.

SGI Collision Repair Process Explained by Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts at Superior Auto Body

Superior take pride in their workmanship. Superior Auto Body is a Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body & Collision Repair Shop. In their latest tip they explain the SGI Collision Repair Process they follow at Superior Auto Body!

THE SGI COLLISION REPAIR PROCESS

DAMAGE ESTIMATE

After filing your claim, we need to appraise your vehicle to find out how bad the damage is and prepare a damage estimate.

The damage estimate can be completed at either an:

Accredited repair shop (if eligible)

Once the damage estimate is done, you’ll get a printout with the cost of repairs for your vehicle. Your claims adjuster will need to confirm your insurance coverage before you can have the vehicle fixed.

DETERMINING RESPONSIBILITY

We’ll tell you if you’re considered responsible for the collision and then finalize the claim. See Determining responsibility for details.

TOTAL LOSS VEHICLES

If your vehicle can’t be repaired, your adjuster will let you know the process for a total loss vehicle.

HAVE YOUR VEHICLE REPAIRED

Once the damage estimate is done, you’ll get a copy of the estimate outlining the cost of repairs for your vehicle. If you’re responsible for paying your deductible or any other costs, it will be listed on the estimate. You can contact your adjuster with any questions you have about these costs.

Repairs must be finalized within 2 years from the date of the collision. It’s a good idea to complete repairs as soon as possible to avoid any deterioration or further damage to the vehicle. Have damage to headlights, tail lights, tires, wheels, etc., fixed as soon as possible. Also, some types of damage can make your vehicle unsafe or less safe to drive.

See details on Damage repair and parts page.

VEHICLE RENTALS

The cost of a rental vehicle is covered if:

  • You’re not responsible for the collision and you need a replacement vehicle, providing the responsible driver has insurance coverage.
  • You have extra auto insurance coverage. Talk to your insurance broker for the details of your coverage or refer to your policy cover page.

AUTHORIZE PAYMENT

Once your vehicle has been repaired, the team at Superior Auto Body will ask you to sign a Certificate of Repairs form. This form signifies that you’re satisfied with the repairs and authorizes us to pay the body shop.

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts Preferred Collision Explain The Costs of Respraying

What can you expect when you deal with the professionals at Preferred Collision and Glass Saskatoon?
You can also expect Seamless quality repairs! A faster turnaround for your vehicle (on average 25% faster!!) & Assistance dealing with insurance! You'll find quality at every price point - from a few hundred dollars to a thousand or more. It's up to you. Preferred Collision and Glass is a Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Expert.

Preferred Collision Break Down The Costs Of Re-Spraying Your Vehicle

Respraying a vehicle is a time-consuming process, with dozens of hours needed for preparation, painting and follow-up color sanding, making it very difficult for a good-quality paint job to cost less than $10,000. Obviously, there is trade-off, you can have less time spent on the respray, which will mean the process will cost less. However, there will be a noticeable difference in the quality of the finish.

Here we look at the various costs that are involved with any respray

DISASSEMBLY
Before any work can begin, the vehicle needs to be completely disassembled. This can be done by the owner if they wish to save costs. However, we recommend that the shop should do it for continuity and parts-tracking assurance. This process can take 12-20 hours and will cost around $2,500.

STRIPPING
The next step is to media-blast or chemically strip the body, which will reveal the full extent of any rust or previous body repairs. This step is where the cost of the project can increase considerably, but it is essential to ensure that a quality job is done. This step will cost around $1,500-$2000. A body respray can be done without media-blasting to save on cost, however, several hours will still be spent sanding down the existing finish.

BODY REPAIR
Body Repair is often the biggest variable as every vehicle needs a different amount of work, but it's normally inevitable that it will need to be done to some degree on every project. Sometimes, it can be cheaper and more efficient to do a whole panel replacement than repair the existing damage. It is difficult to estimate the cost of body work before the project has started, but it can range from a few hours of work to hundreds of hours, purely depending on the state of the car once it has been stripped.

PANEL ALIGNMENT
Panel alignment tends to be necessary on older vehicles, as the body panels generally need to be adjusted to achieve more even gaps and ensure the body lines have good alignment. This process could add $2,000 or more to the cost, but it isn’t always necessary on every project.

BLOCK SANDING
The smoother and straighter the body is, the better the finished job will look, and this comes down to block sanding. Block sanding is an extremely time-consuming process and it takes hundreds of hours to do a quality job. A reasonable 100 hours of block sanding can add $9,000 to the tally, but this doesn’t include a concours-level finish. It is very important not to skimp at this step as it will massively affect the quality of the paint job.

PAINTING
This part of the project actually involves less hours than others. Depending on how many layers are sprayed on, the painting process tends to involve 8-12 hours’ worth of labor, costing around $800-$1,200. However, two or three gallons of paint will be needed, so this part of the project will normally cost between £3,000-$5,000 in total, but can sometimes be more.

COLOR SANDING
Similar to block sanding, hundreds of hours can be spent on high levels of color sanding. Color sanding is necessary in order to achieve a greater appearance to the finish. A reasonable 40-50 hours of color sanding can add another $3,500-$4,500 to the final cost of the project, but for an even better finish more hours are needed, which will increase the cost.
So, if you are needing a re-spray on your vehicle come visit us at Preferred Collision, and we PROMISE to do a quality job for a fair price.

If you are in a collision, Preferred Collision and Glass will look after all your and your car’s needs, during and after, with our Customer For Life program.
