In this Saskatoon furnace article,  Jeff Bolton, owner of JOB, highlights how important it is to be aware of the threat of carbon monoxide and he shares some winter safety tips for your home.

Winter Safety Tips For Your Home From JOB Heating & Air

What does that do and why does it matter?

I was recently in two Saskatoon residences with gas inspections to investigate the source of carbon monoxide in the homes. Thank heavens both homeowners had carbon monoxide detectors,  that in my opinion, saved their lives. Both days I went home and checked my CO detector.

When was the last time that you checked your CO Detector?

Go do it now then come back and finish reading…
So how this works is usually the fire department or Sask Energy get a call,  then they visit the home with their carbon monoxide meters to assess the level and then, if reading show and issue they red tag the furnace unit and shut off the gas. The Red Tag program provides a consistent means for gas utilities, propane distributors, gas contractors or others deemed appropriate by the chief gas inspector to report unresolved gas-related deficiencies or identify reoccurring design flaws. The issuing of red tags is only done by a licensed gasfitter.

What to do when you have a red tag.

The homeowner should then call us to come to correct the problem. We will go through the furnace and water heater with a fine-tooth comb to attempt to find the source of the carbon monoxide.

Sometimes it is a crack in a heat exchanger, however, sometimes the furnace and water heater are working exactly as they should. It is then incumbent upon us to investigate why the carbon monoxide is present in the home. In these locations we often find that the homes are drawn into negative pressure, what that means is that the homes are exhausting more air than fresh air coming into the home. As you may remember from science class,  areas of high pressure always go to areas of low pressure. So what happens is the high pressure outside finds a way into the area of low pressure (inside the home) through any possible route. If the doors and windows are closed then the only other hole in the home is the chimney. Air begins to flow down the chimney to replace the air that’s being exhausted out of the home. So why is that an issue? This becomes a problem when the furnace or water heater begins to fire and there is no draft up the chimney. This then results in the products of combustion (carbon monoxide) being vented into the home.

What can homeowners do to prevent this from happening?

There are items in your home to prevent this from happening. In most cases, the insulated vent that runs from the outside of your home into the furnace room brings what we call combustion air. The combustion air helps to regulate the pressure of your home preventing your home from getting into a negative air pressure situation. This is also the air that is used when the furnace or water heater are firing up and sometimes this air supply can become blocked. On occasion, we have found that homeowners will purposely block the intake because they don’t like the cold air coming in.

I need to stress how important this is and that by blocking this you are putting yourself and your family at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. So please don’t block this or if you have, open it up immediately.

Another more common problem is that the air intakes themselves become blocked. These intakes appear from the outside like exhaust vents but when you bend over and look up inside them they are in fact air intakes with a screen that needs to be clear of all debris. A good rule of thumb is to walk around the perimeter of your home and look for these vent/intake hoods. Look up inside them and clean them up. This is a simple 10-minute job and this will help to protect you from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Do your intakes look like this?

  • Go outside today walk around your home and clean these intakes.
  • Check your carbon monoxide detectors
  • Check your smoke alarms.
These 2 devices save lives every day you just don’t hear about it. If you don’t have a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector buy them and put them in your home today. I promise you they save lives.

Then have us come out and do a furnace tune-up. We test the furnace and ensure it is functioning as it should be, in addition, we clean the parts of the furnace that you cannot.

The Bridge City Duct Cleaning team know that cleaner air means healthier home, and with many years of experience in the HVAC industry, they are uniquely qualified! Be assured that Bridge City Duct Cleaning truly cares about the condition of your homes air quality as they see it for themselves every day, up close and personal. Bridge City Duct Cleaning is a Trusted Saskatoon Furnace and Duct Cleaning Company.

When is It Time To Clean Your Ducts?

Over time, ducts become littered with foreign objects such as dust, mould, dead insects, dust mites, and animal hair. Unfortunately, people often overlook cleaning their ducts, which can lead to problems.

Consequences Of Dirty Ducts

  1. Dirt and dust restrict the heating and cooling capability of ducts, which results in increased run time requiring more fuel and energy, therefore costing you more!
  2. Air flow is restricted, which means the system can’t effectively circulate properly warmed or cooled air throughout your home. Again, this means that more energy will be used.
  3. As your HVAC system needs to operate longer, it increases the wear and tear of it. This means you’ll need to replace it sooner, which would be a lot more expensive than just getting it cleaned.
  4. All the dirt and dust that is left in the ducts can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mites and other unwanted pests, which can be detrimental to your health and exacerbate allergies.
  5. The dirt and dust spreads much quicker around your home with dirty ducts, no matter how much you clean! The contaminants flow from room to room covering anything in their path, such as beds, tables, phones, and children’s toys.

How To Determine If Your Ducts Need Cleaning

You can attempt a visual inspection of the air ducts to help determine whether they need cleaning. However, you must be able to physically access ALL the areas of your HVAC system in order to do this properly. That is why we recommend you getting the professionals in to inspect the system, as with our high-resolution video inspection cameras, we can have a thorough look to determine whether your ducts need cleaning.

Determine The Type & Amount Of Debris Inside Your Ducts

It is inevitable that at some point ducts will get clogged with various types of debris and pollutants. This can consist of pollen, rodent and insect faeces, dust, dust mites, and lint. All of these MUST be removed to ensure the proper functionality of your ducts.
If you find mould growing inside or outside the surface of the ducts, a thorough moisture issue investigation needs to be quickly carried out to prevent any further complications. It is essential that you do not try to tackle mould in or out of the system yourself, but instead let the professionals do it on your behalf.

Clean The Duct Yourself Or Not

If dust, debris, pollens or moulds have accumulated to the point where they are clogging air ducts, collecting on dampers, joints and screws, then it is most certainly time to get those ducts PROFESSIONALLY cleaned. If you fail to do so the air flow will get restricted, affecting its efficiency in the long run and potentially causing premature failure of the whole system.

Is Replacing A Furnace Difficult?

I get this question quite often and the answer is no not for industry professionals like J.O.B Heating and Air Conditioning. We specialize in replacing furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters. In fact, many times we replace the furnace, air conditioner and water heater all in the same day. Our process is simple, you ask us to come in and offer you a quote for replacement. I will come over to your home at no charge (within a 30KM radius of Saskatoon), I will view your old furnace and equipment. Look over the venting options and make sure that there are no unforeseen hiccups. Sometimes these hiccups do happen but when we see them ahead of the install date and plan for them then it becomes a seamless replacement.

You want to be wary of the company that will offer you an estimate over the phone or the contractors that don't spend any time looking at your equipment or the install. They will say that they are "bonded" and you have nothing to fear. This may not always be the case. To be bonded simply means that in order to get as gas licence we need to put up a $5000 bond. Yes, that’s all that's required $5000.  This is why it is important to choose a contractor that would not only be licensed and bonded but would be part of professional groups such as the Sask Energy Network or Trusted Saskatoon.com. J.O.B Heating and Air Conditioning is very proud to be a part of both of these professional organizations.

Being part of Trusted Saskatoon.com means that Trusted has looked behind the curtain and found that we are a company with high moral values. We also agree to uphold the 5 Trusted guarantees. Being a Sask Energy Network member also requires a high level of professionalism and Trust. J.O.B Heating and Air Conditioning carry a $5 million dollar liability policy when most companies carry $2million. Trust JOB Heating & Air Conditioning with Saskatoon Heating And Furnace Issues

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning’s wonderful staff will be more than happy to provide you with an estimate for any home comfort improvement that you have in mind. They also offer training classes at your personal site for maintenance and they also offer home heating tune-ups. JOB are Trusted Saskatoon Furnace experts and they can also help you with all your Saskatoon plumbing needs! In their latest Saskatoon furnace tip, owner Jeff Bolton,  shares why you can trust JOB with your Saskatoon heating and furnace issues.

The Importance of Trust.

When calling someone for help, especially help in your own home, you really need to ask yourself – who can you trust? If you aren’t working with someone you can trust, how can you have any confidence you are being treated fairly, and the person working for you has your best interests at heart?

Jeffs Real Saskatoon Heating and Furnace Calls.

I was asked to go help two different ladies. Both lived on their own and had furnace issues. The first lady was what I would describe as everyone’s grandma, you know the type, sweet as sugar. The second was a single mother who was also a joy to meet. Both had very legitimate concerns with their furnaces. The first lady simply asked me to drop by and listen to her furnace because she thought that something was not right with it. I was in her furnace room for maybe 5 seconds and I could tell that the bearings in her inducer motor were on their last legs. We had one of our technicians over to her house later that afternoon to change the inducer motor and it turned out just fine. By calling me, she saved herself a possible (more likely probable) after hours call due to having no heat.

The second lady asked me to come and give her a quote on a new furnace because she was under the impression that her furnace needed to be changed. When I showed up I commented that the house was nice and warm. She told me that her brother had been by and found a loose wire on the furnace. I cycled the furnace on and off a few times and I believe that he was correct. Although this furnace is quite old I suggested she budget the appropriate amount to replace the furnace within 3 to 7 years. I explained what parts would cost her if they needed to be replaced. Of course, I didn’t charge her for my time because we don’t charge for furnace replacement quotes.

The trust issues with Saskatoon heating and furnace contractors

What I realized when listening to these ladies is that there is a real trust issue with companies that they hire to come into their homes in Saskatoon. Who can you trust and how do you know you can trust them? This is the very reason that Trusted Saskatoon was started. A wonderful lady who was a single mother had a company charge her a ridiculous amount of money to change a P-trap in her plumbing system in 2010.

She thought there should be a better way to find businesses you can trust, so she created trustedsaskatoon.com and launched it along with her 5 Trusted guarantees in 2011.

The 5 Trusted Guarantees are:

  1. Provide the service and quality promised.
  2. Complete the job on time.
  3. Charge the price quoted with NO surprises.
  4. Communicate honestly and be responsive to customer needs.
  5. Resolve any issues with customer satisfaction in mind.

To be a Trusted Saskatoon plumbing and heating company JOB, along with every Trusted business, must adhere to these 5 promises. I believe that these promises are the foundation of good customer service, and that integrity and honesty must be maintained at all times in everything we do. We use this approach when dealing with our customers or dealing with our vendors. By maintaining this sense of integrity, honesty, and respect no matter who we are dealing with, those values ingrain themselves in the culture of our company – acting according to these values just becomes the norm.

JOB Heating and Air Conditioning is a company you can trust with your Saskatoon heating and furnace worries.

Who can you trust with Saskatoon heating and furnace issues

Most people don’t think about their furnace filters, until their home won’t reach a desired temperature or their furnace has a malfunction. Price points tend to be a purchasing factor rather than knowing exactly what your furnace needs. Here are some facts to guide you in the right direction.

indoor air quality

The Importance of Furnace Filters & Their Condition!

(1) Lower energy costs

The main purpose of a filter is to protect the blower fan from dust, hair and debris that your return air ducts pull in. Your furnace has to work harder when your filter is dirty, using more energy to get the desired temperature you want in your home. Changing your filter every 1-3 months will help the furnace work efficiently and save you money on your annual utility costs.

(2) Maintaining healthy air quality:

Your filter will remove contaminants from your HVAC system. A dirty furnace filter can cause allergens, pet dander, dust and dirt to circulate through your home. It’s especially important for people with asthma and allergies to change their filter on a regular basis to prevent a flare up of symptoms.

(3)  Extend the life of your furnace:

When dirt accumulates on the filter it makes it harder for air to pass through, making the motor work harder and can cause the system to overheat. This can lead to extra costs for a furnace repair and worst case scenario, you would need to replace the furnace. This is especially true for older furnaces that haven’t had proper annual cleanings and maintenance done. Caliber provides a repeat customer discount for our annual clients.

(4) Knowing your MERV rating:

It’s best to check the manufacturer of your furnace for the correct MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating, which ranges from 1-12. A higher rating will filter more particles but also allows less air flow through and can force the system to work harder, possibly causing a malfunction. A rating of 8-11 is adequate for most homes. Some retail stores have their own rating and should be converted to the MERV scale to ensure the safety of your furnace.

(5) Choosing the best filter for your HVAC system

Disposable pleated filter – Most common. The pleated filter is made from paper and polyester or can be made from green materials. The cost can range from a few dollars up to $40 each depending on the brand, size and MERV rating. This is the most common filter used in residential homes. They can filter some small particles like mites, allergens and spores as well as improve the air quality in the home

Disposable fibreglass filter – Cheapest. Made from 1” thick spun fibreglass. They are flimsy, have lower MERV ratings and tend to be inexpensive. The fibreglass filter doesn’t do much more than stop large particles from entering the blower fan. They have no effect on air quality and should be changed more often than a pleated filter due to the inferior quality. People with asthma or allergies should not use this type of filter unless specifically told by the furnace manufacturer to do so. They are most commonly used when building or renovating a home but some sensitive furnaces will require these to not overheat.

filter blog 5

Electrostatic filter – Most expensive. Made from self-charging cotton or paper fibers. This filter is best suited for homes that have pets, children, allergies or smokers. The self-charging fibers attract and trap small particles such as spores, allergens and mites. Permanent options are removable and washable. These filters can typically be used for 6-8 years if properly maintained through vacuuming or washing every 1-3 months. These filters need to be completely dry before returning to the furnace. This filter has the most resistance to air flow, you should contact your furnace manufacturer to see if it’s safe to use before purchasing.

In Summary, the best thing to remember when maintaining your furnace is that a little goes a long way. Spend the money now on better filters to save you money on repairs or replacements. Set a monthly reminder to check or change your filter. Make sure to have an annual furnace and duct cleaning done by a professional HVAC company. Read your manual and if you don’t understand something, call the manufacturer. Keep your furnace area clear from storage and debris. Lastly and probably the most is to keep your children away from the vent covers. We have seen Christmas ornaments, cans of food, clothing, toys, beer bottles and numerous other items in the ducting. These items can make their way down to the furnace, causing major damage. We have also had to wait for cats to make their way out of the ducting before cleaning and nobody wants to lose their pet if they happen to get stuck, overheat or injured in the ducting.
