Since 1910, Saskatoon Funeral Home has responded to the needs of Saskatoon & area citizens of every faith and every walk of life. They have a proud history as Saskatoon's longest-serving, local, family-owned and operated, full-service funeral and cremation provider to trace its roots to the beginning days of our city. Saskatoon Funeral Home are a Trusted Saskatoon funeral home.

In their latest article on funerals, they provide important guidelines regarding what to do when a death occurs.

When Death Occurs

No matter if a death is sudden, or if it is something that was a long time coming, the loss of a loved one makes us feel emotional and overwhelmed. No amount of preparation can fully prepare you for the loss of a loved one. When you are in a heightened emotional state, even the most basic decisions can seem staggering. The following is a rough guideline of what needs to be done within the first 24 hours after death.

When a death occurs at home or a place of business

If the person was not under palliative home care, the police will have to be notified immediately. The police will be dispatched to the home and place the call to the coroner. From there the coroner determines whether further action is necessary. The coroner must release the deceased before a funeral home can do anything. If the person was under palliative home care, contact the home care representative if they were not present and they will notify family members what the proper procedures are to follow.

When a death occurs at a hospital/nursing home/hospice facility

The staff of a care facility such as a hospital or a nursing home will notify you and the necessary authorities immediately after a death has occurred. If a funeral home name has been provided to the hospital or nursing home, they will be notified at the time of death. If you are present at the hospital when the funeral home representative arrives, they will ask a few questions about the deceased wishes and set up a time to come into the funeral home to make arrangements, however, if you are not present a funeral director will contact you by telephone to discuss these arrangements.

Informing a Funeral Director

Once everything has been cleared with the proper authorities, the next call you place should be to a licensed funeral director.  Funeral directors are here to help you obtain a death certificate, transport the deceased, and in the event, pre-planning was not done, select a casket/urn and arrange the funeral/memorial service. Funeral directors are here to help and advise you and will work very hard to relieve the stress and logistics involved in funeral planning.

Meeting a Funeral Director

You should meet with a funeral director within 24 hours of a death to begin to make final arrangements for your loved one.  Deciding on these final arrangements may seem like a very daunting task, especially when you are in a heightened emotional state, but, funeral home staff have years of experience dealing with these issues, and strive to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Making Arrangements

First, the Funeral Director will gather the information required for registering the death. This includes:

  • Full Name and Address
  • Marital Status
  • Date and Place of Birth
  • Father’s Name, Mother’s Name (including maiden name)
  • Birthplaces of Father and Mother
  • Name of Spouse (if married or widowed, including maiden name)
  • Occupation
It is advisable to bring in a copy of the will if it is available to show who is the Executor in charge of making funeral arrangements.

If no pre-planning has been done, necessary arrangements need to be made for the funeral service. These include:
  • Scheduling the location, date, and time of the visitation and funeral service
  • Selecting burial or cremation
  • Choosing Funeral Products
  • Arranging a cemetery plot if requested
  • Preparing an obituary notice
  • Scheduling transportation arrangements
A funeral director will guide you through all these steps, using your wants, needs, and desires as a foundation to create a memorable funeral for your loved one. From here the funeral services can be personalized. Did your loved one have a favorite sports team? What was their favorite type of music? What activity was your loved one known best for? Recalling fond memories assists with the grieving process and will help honor the life of your loved one.

SPRING INTO SUMMER WITH HVAC MAINTENANCE

Temperatures are getting warmer in Saskatchewan. The last thing you want is to have to replace your air conditioner in the middle of summer. Before those warmer days arrive, ensure your HVAC unit is ready for the new season by following these maintenance tips.

1. Remove the Cover and Clean The HVAC Unit

First on the list is the outside unit. Ensure it is turned off, then remove the cover from the unit. Next, you will want to remove leaves and debris that have accumulated around the unit throughout the winter months. Last, do a visual inspection of the unit. If the unit appears damaged, do not turn on the unit until you have had it checked by a professional.

2. Check The Refrigerant Line

On the outside of the unit, you will notice refrigerant lines leading into your home. The larger line is called the suction line. To ensure the air stays cool, the suction line is wrapped in insulation. Check the insulation for cracks or spots that are worn. If insulation is worn, it will need to be replaced. Without proper insulation, your unit will not function effectively nor cool your home efficiently. Each spring, be sure to check the refrigerant line as failing to do so could result in your unit freezing up.

3. Change The Furnace Filter

To distribute cool air throughout your home, your HVAC system uses your furnace’s air filter. If the filter is dirty, your system will have to work harder to supply cold air throughout your home. Since an air filter traps dust, pollen, and other allergens, a dirty filter will result in these allergens being spread throughout your ducts. Changing your furnace filter improves air quality and will ensure your HVAC system is functioning effectively.

4. Ensure The Thermostat Is Working

Not only do you need to check your HVAC unit, but you also need to check your thermostat. Set your thermostat to cool and test your system. Program the thermostat 4-5 degrees lower than room temperature. It may take a few minutes, but you should be able to feel the cool air blowing in. If not, it is time to call in the professionals.

5. Book Your Spring HVAC Maintenance Appointment

Following these tips will help ensure your HVAC system is ready so you can spring into the summer months with ease. However, booking a tune-up is recommended as there may be problems that only a trained technician can recognize. Book your spring maintenance appointment to ensure your HVAC system is fully prepared before the Saskatchewan summer arrives!

Contact JOB Heating and Air Conditioning to have an HVAC professional conduct a thorough maintenance inspection of your HVAC unit and address any problems it may be having. Wheatland Fireplace, Kitchen & Bath Share Their Eight Favourite Fireplace Tips

Your first step into the beautiful Wheatland Fireplace Kitchen & Bath Saskatoon showroom will help you understand why Wheatland Fireplace has been given the Thumbs up by Trusted Saskatoon as your exclusive Saskatoon fireplace store.

8 Fireplace Tips You Need To Know

Wheatland Fireplace, Kitchen & Bath loves their customers and as a result, their customers love and TRUST them. In their latest tip, they share 8 surprising tips for your fireplace.

1. What to Do if You Don't Have a Fireplace Match

To light a fireplace without a fireplace match, or even to light hard-to-reach wicks at the bottom of jar candles, use an uncooked strand of spaghetti. Light the end of it, then use it like a fireplace match.

2. Fireplace Quick Clean

Cleaning out a fireplace is easy when you line the bottom with aluminum foil. Just wait for the ashes to cool, fold up the foil, and lay a fresh layer out.

3. How to Deep-Clean Your Fireplace

If you’ve been burning a lot of fires this winter, get your brick fireplace nice and clean with a simple household solution. Take 3 cups vinegar, 3 cups ammonia, and 3 cups borax, mix the ingredients thoroughly and scrub the bricks clean. This will work for any bricks inside or outside your home.

4. The Easiest Way to Make Kindling

If you have a fireplace in your home or a fire pit outside, making kindling out of logs is an important skill to master. Luckily, it’s easy with a straight-claw hammer. Turn a log on its side, with a cut end up. Smack the top of the wood near the edge with the straight claw of the hammer, and the kindling will split right off.

5. Orange Peel Kindling

One of our favorite household items to use as kindling? Orange peels! Orange (and lemon) peels smell delicious when they burn, and they contain oils that not only make them burn longer but help ignite the wood around them. Finally, they produce less creosote than paper, which will help keep your chimney clean.

6. Dryer Lint Kindling

Instead of throwing away lint you’ve cleaned out of your dryer’s screen, use it as kindling for your fireplace. It lights quickly and can be stuffed places paper can’t. Place it in toilet paper tubes or a cardboard egg carton (which can also be stuffed with receipts or other paper!)

7. A Place for Firewood

Instead of buying an expensive container to hold firewood and kindling next to your fireplace, use a ceramic flower pot instead. They’re cheap and easy to find in tons of different designs, and they’re perfect for firewood because they’re hearty yet porous.

8. Put Out a Fire Without Water

You’re ready to go to bed, but the fire you started a few hours ago is still crackling and glowing with its last few embers. Instead of making a mess with water, throw some salt over anything that’s still burning. It will snuff out the flame and you’ll end up with less soot than if you let it smoulder. Not only that, it will make it easier to clean the soot from your chimney. As an added bonus it will also make your fire burn a cool yellow color!

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C and Plumbing Pros For 10 Years

In this series of articles, we are shining a spotlight on the businesses that have been with us since we launched in 2011. We want to thank them for TRUSTING our team, and we are recognizing each of them individually for providing 10 years of OUTSTANDING service to the public of Saskatoon and surrounding areas! In this article, we celebrate and recognize Jeff and the team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning - Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C, and Saskatoon Plumbing Pros!

We are pleased to celebrate JOB Heating & Air Conditioning who have been a Trusted Saskatoon partner for over 10 years!

The JOB Heating & Air Conditioning team is well known for the air conditioning, furnace, and plumbing work they do for both residential and commercial customers. Jeff Bolton, worked up from employee to partner and he is now the trusted face of the company which currently has six employees. Jeff has been in the HVAC and Plumbing industry since 1989. With this many years of plumbing and heating expertise under his belt, he has a clear vision and commitment to always putting the customer and his community first. Spending many years as a volunteer, serving the community's greatest needs has given Jeff the right balance of drive and determination to always do the right thing. He has a really big heart and is dedicated to always putting the customer's needs first, he prides himself on JOB’s record of integrity, honesty, and service, and he takes being trusted very seriously.

As Jeff would say…”I do what I say, and say what I do!”

“One of Jeff’s biggest challenges over the years has been competing with kijiji’s plumbers and other HVAC companies that don’t abide by reasonable industry standards or even properly insure or register their businesses. Companies that are often run by folks that over promise and under deliver, they often undercut on price to get the job and end up not delivering on the service. Many try to make it up by high pressure sales on work or products the customer may not need. This is the total opposite of how Jeff and his team operates and as someone who was ripped off by an unscrupulous company myself I am wary. I am happy to say that I have used JOB personally several times over the last 10 years and the experience is always stellar."
- Sara Wheelwright, Trusted Founder

The JOB Heating & Air team also prides itself on being recognized as a leader in water heating system technology for new in-floor and boiler installations in Saskatoon. Jeff is passionate about what he does and his enthusiasm is infectious. What you see truly is what you get with Jeff, he is authentic and cares deeply about always leaving a good impression with clients and it is obvious that he values and supports his team, that’s why he wanted to create a business where people love to work!

When asked about what drives Jeff, he explains his mantra around the shop is.

“We do every job as if it was our own mother’s house. We treat each other (my coworkers) with respect and dignity and that just becomes the way that we treat everyone, especially our customers.”

A great example of why JOB Heating & Air Conditioning has been a 10 Year Trusted Saskatoon Partner.

Remember JOB... because they are always striving to live up to their tagline... "Your Comfort is Our Concern!"
