Here Don Klassen shares a tip on the benefits of properly maintaining a vehicle instead of replacing it every few years:

Have you ever thought of the money you spend maintaining your vehicle as an investment? Not many people do. When we sell or trade our present vehicle in for a new one we get very little compared to what the vehicle cost us in the first place. So how can we justify spending money on a car or truck when it looses so much of its value in just a few short years? Read on, I want to show you how you can literally save hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime of driving. Most of us need our vehicle to get to work and back, take the kids to sports and piano lessons or visit family and friends. The money we spend keeping our vehicle fit for the road can seem to be a drain on the bank account and at times we only spend the money when problems get bad enough and the car won’t work right. At this point it costs more to make the repair than if we had serviced the car at the first sign of trouble. Better yet, would be having the car inspected and appropriate servicing done before we are inconvenienced with a break down.

Preventative maintenance is when we have a service schedule set out to inspect known wearing components on the vehicle and to routinely perform the needed servicing to extend the life of the vehicle. This keeps your car young a long time. It doesn’t ever feel old because it has been looked after.

Lets face it; car payments get old in a hurry. When we buy that new car we are excited and don’t mind having the $400 or $600 a month payment. The vehicle sales marketing has been talking about bi-weekly payments to make the amount you owe appear less. But a year after the payments start the car has lost more value than what we still owe on it. That’s no fun. Vehicle manufactures have gotten car payments out to 7 years (84 months) just so that you can afford the payment. Do you really want a car payment for the rest of your life? When we look at the vehicle purchase price and maintaining the vehicle, as “the cost of transportation” it shows that we can cut our cost of transportation substantially by keeping and properly maintaining the vehicle we have instead of replacing it every few years. It will still need to be replaced but not nearly as often and the savings can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Have a look at the chart below. Both people buy the same vehicle; the first person replaces the vehicle at 5 years and keeps the payment cycle going. The second person is on a preventative maintenance plan to “keep their car young” and keeps the vehicle for 15 years before replacing it. Look at the difference in the costs over 30 years. The person keeping and maintaining the vehicle for 15 years before replacement has a nice little “nest egg” set aside after 30 years of driving even with the increased cost of maintenance on the older vehicle.

Average Price of a vehicle in Canada 2012  $32,210.00  $32,210.00
Average monthly payment  $528.00  $528.00
Years you plan to own the vehicle 5 years 15 years
Number of years to calculate vehicle cost 30 years 30 years
Number of cars purchased 6 2
Total spent in car payments  $190,080.00  $63,360.00
Total spent on maintenance and repairs  $37,500.00  $52,500.00
Cost of transportation excluding fuel and insurance  $227,580.00  $115,860.00
Investing the difference in vehicle cost at 4% return will result in a savings of $0    $192,737.00
