Tip On Creating An Eco-Friendly Bathroom From Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In their latest Trusted Saskatoon plumbing tip, they explain how to main your bathroom more eco-friendly.

How To Make Your Bathroom Eco-Friendly

Nowadays, we understand the impact we, as a community, have on our shared environment. We enjoy some of the cleanest air and forests in all of Canada because we all take this truth to heart. Eco-consciousness can also impact our bottom line energy costs. Whether you want to save on your water or energy bill, or just want to conserve resources, we have a bunch of great tips that can make your bathroom more eco-friendly!

Water Usage

Even with the immense amount of water your dishwasher and laundry machine use, your bathroom is likely where you consume the most water. This also means it’s the ideal place to start conserving water!

We’ll start with some healthy habits that you can implement into your bathroom routine.

  • Turn off Faucet While Shaving or Brushing Teeth
  • Take Shorter Showers
  • Fix Leaks Immediately
Good habits go a long way towards helping your water usage. Make sure you are only turning that faucet handle when you are actively using water!

Low-Flow Appliances

Continuing on the theme of water conservation, consider installing low-flow versions of your bathroom appliances. You may not realize this, but your current appliances could be using more water than is necessary. Older toilets often use fifteen to twenty-six litres per flush! Compared to the new high point of just six litres, that is a huge difference!

We find a similar story with faucets and showerheads. For faucets, installing an aerator, which mixes in air with the water as it comes out of your spout, will lower the amount of water you use without affecting your water pressure. Just as older toilets use an inordinate amount of water, showerheads that were installed prior to 1994 are most likely water-wasters as well. The leading, current water-conscious showerhead brands can provide the same flow of water using only two litres a minute.

Natural and Eco-Friendly Lighting

Water isn’t the only resource you are using in your bathroom. You also have to consider your electricity use. Compared to a halogen bulb a new LED bulb is nearly 5 times more efficient, according to ENERGY STAR. Halogen light bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat. LEDs, instead, devote almost all their energy towards producing light.

Tankless Water Heater

Your third water-using resource in your bathroom is your water heater. Traditional water heaters use fuel oil or natural gas to heat your water, which is uniquely inefficient. While the concept of storing hot water makes sense intuitively, it can actually lead to a lot of energy loss from standby heat loss.

Tankless water heaters solve this problem. Instead of storing water, a tankless system heats your water supply as you need it. As the water flows in, a heating coil warms the water to the desired temperature set on your systems’ thermostat. For those who fear running out of hot water, this is an elegant solution. There is no set amount of hot water with a tankless system. You can use as much hot water as you need.

Additionally, you can pair the two systems together! Using a tankless system to supplement your traditional water heater can provide a seamless hot water supply to one fixture, to ensure you never run out of hot water through that appliance. A small point-of-use system can be used with a specific appliance, like your shower, so it does not use the hot water produced by your traditional system. This allows you to take advantage of the efficiency of a tankless system and lower the overall cost of your monthly utility costs.

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C and Plumbing Pros For 10 Years

In this series of articles, we are shining a spotlight on the businesses that have been with us since we launched in 2011. We want to thank them for TRUSTING our team, and we are recognizing each of them individually for providing 10 years of OUTSTANDING service to the public of Saskatoon and surrounding areas! In this article, we celebrate and recognize Jeff and the team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning - Trusted Saskatoon Furnace, A/C, and Saskatoon Plumbing Pros!

We are pleased to celebrate JOB Heating & Air Conditioning who have been a Trusted Saskatoon partner for over 10 years!

The JOB Heating & Air Conditioning team is well known for the air conditioning, furnace, and plumbing work they do for both residential and commercial customers. Jeff Bolton, worked up from employee to partner and he is now the trusted face of the company which currently has six employees. Jeff has been in the HVAC and Plumbing industry since 1989. With this many years of plumbing and heating expertise under his belt, he has a clear vision and commitment to always putting the customer and his community first. Spending many years as a volunteer, serving the community's greatest needs has given Jeff the right balance of drive and determination to always do the right thing. He has a really big heart and is dedicated to always putting the customer's needs first, he prides himself on JOB’s record of integrity, honesty, and service, and he takes being trusted very seriously.

As Jeff would say…”I do what I say, and say what I do!”

“One of Jeff’s biggest challenges over the years has been competing with kijiji’s plumbers and other HVAC companies that don’t abide by reasonable industry standards or even properly insure or register their businesses. Companies that are often run by folks that over promise and under deliver, they often undercut on price to get the job and end up not delivering on the service. Many try to make it up by high pressure sales on work or products the customer may not need. This is the total opposite of how Jeff and his team operates and as someone who was ripped off by an unscrupulous company myself I am wary. I am happy to say that I have used JOB personally several times over the last 10 years and the experience is always stellar."
- Sara Wheelwright, Trusted Founder

The JOB Heating & Air team also prides itself on being recognized as a leader in water heating system technology for new in-floor and boiler installations in Saskatoon. Jeff is passionate about what he does and his enthusiasm is infectious. What you see truly is what you get with Jeff, he is authentic and cares deeply about always leaving a good impression with clients and it is obvious that he values and supports his team, that’s why he wanted to create a business where people love to work!

When asked about what drives Jeff, he explains his mantra around the shop is.

“We do every job as if it was our own mother’s house. We treat each other (my coworkers) with respect and dignity and that just becomes the way that we treat everyone, especially our customers.”

A great example of why JOB Heating & Air Conditioning has been a 10 Year Trusted Saskatoon Partner.

They are recognized by peers and offer sales, service, training & installations for residential, and commercial Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing systems in Saskatoon and area. JOB Heating & Air are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers

In their latest article, Jeff Bolton, JOB's owner, shares their top fall plumbing tips.

5 Fall Plumbing Tips From JOB Heating and Air Conditioning

Here are 5 fall plumbing tips to help protect your home this season.

Tip #1: Disconnect and Store Outdoor Water Hoses

Since outdoor hoses are made from rubber, freezing and thawing weakens the material and causes cracks. Disconnecting hoses in the winter and storing them in an area of your home that does not reach freezing temperatures will ensure the longevity of your hose is maintained. If you leave your outdoor hose connected all winter long, any leftover water can freeze and expand. This causes faucets and any connected pipes inside your home to freeze and potentially burst.

After disconnecting your outdoor house, it is important to check the faucet for any leaks. Faucet leaks can lead to water damage and cause plumbing issues when temperatures drop and things freeze. Once faucets are checked for leaks, it is a good idea to insulate them for further protection.

Tip #2: Shut Off Outside Faucets

Most homes are equipped with an interior shut-off valve for the outside faucets. Be sure to shut off and drain them so there is no remaining water in the outside lines that could freeze and create plumbing issues.

Tip #3: Inspect Your Hot Water Heater and Ensure Maintenance is Completed

The fall season is the perfect time to drain your hot water heater as it needs to work much harder in the cold months to provide hot water to your household. Maintenance includes flushing your hot water heater to remove sediment build up. The sediment build up is important to remove as it causes rust and can block proper heat transfer. Flushing your hot water heater will ensure it is operating efficiently, saving you money on your hot water bills.

If your hot water heater is more than 20 years old it may be time to consider a replacement before something goes wrong. You do not want to be stuck without hot water, especially heading into winter.

Tip #4: Insulate Your Pipes

Be sure to insulate any pipes that may be exposed to cold temperatures such as those in your basement and garage. Insulating your pipes properly will prevent them from freezing in the winter.

It is important to note that it is common for gaps to develop in the areas where pipes enter your home. These gaps between the pipes and the walls allow for cold air to get through. Cold air seepage can lead to pipes freezing and thus increase your heating bill. Luckily these gaps can be sealed using caulking and weather stripping, and taking the time to seal them can prevent larger issues down the road.

Tip #5: Inspect Your Sump Pump

A working sump pump is extremely important to prevent flooding as it removes excess water from the foundation of your property. If your sump pump is left exposed to extreme temperatures it can freeze. Freezing prevents your sump pump from operating correctly and can compromise its ability to protect your home. Be sure to inspect your sump pump this fall to ensure it is working as it should, or have it inspected by a professional if you are unsure.

These are just a few plumbing tips to help protect your home this fall. If you need any assistance with your plumbing, furnace, or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.
