Why Your Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling
An A/C unit that’s not cooling your home is a big problem. After all, that’s its one job.
When you’re A/C doesn’t perform as it should, it’s frustrating, time-consuming, and very hot.
There are several reasons your air conditioner may be failing to perform. The experts at Razor Heating and Air Conditioning are going to walk through each one – and how best to fix it.
1. Your Thermostat Isn’t Cooperating
Your first stop is your thermostat. You should make sure that your thermostat is not only set to ‘ON’ but that it is set to ‘COOL’. Test that it’s working by setting the thermostat several degrees cooler than the stated temperature. You want to feel that chill!
If you can hear the air conditioner running, but minutes later still don’t feel any cool air coming through the vents, there could be something wrong with your thermostat and its electrical wiring. Fixing that problem is best left to a professional. You should also make sure all your windows and doors are sealed shut, and your supply and return vents are open and unblocked. It’s little things like this that are easy to forget about but super easy to fix.
2. A Breaker Has Been Tripped
This tip is only for those homeowners whose air conditioners are not running at all. Your A/C runs on electricity. No electricity going to your air conditioner means no cool air making your home a summer paradise. It’s time to travel to the location of your breaker panel and do a check. The breakers for your air conditioner should be clearly labeled. Flip them off and on again, and see if this makes a difference.
3. Your Air Filter Is Clogged
Just because your air filter is located in your furnace’s blower doesn’t mean it isn’t used by your air conditioner. Your furnace’s air handler is what pushes the cooled air through the filter, through your ductwork, and into your home.
Therefore, if your air filter becomes clogged with dirt and debris, it’ll act a lot like a cork in a bottle: little to nothing is getting past it. Razor Heating and Air Conditioning recommend checking your filter once a month and changing it at least every 3 months – more often if you have hairy pets, allergies, or a lot of people living in your home. Air filters can be found at local hardware and home stores. Make sure you replace your current filter with one that is the same size.
4. Your Outdoor Unit is Coated in Dirt and Debris
Sensing a theme here? Dirt is no friend to an air conditioner. Your air conditioner condenser is located outside your home and left exposed to the elements when in use. After a while, all that wind and rain is bound to blow some dirt and debris into it. If there’s too much dirt, your condenser can’t perform the heat exchange process efficiently. There are things you can do to help with this particular problem.
For example, tidying up the landscaping around your condenser will help keep branches, bushes, and other vegetation from adding to the debris buildup. Razor Heating and Air Conditioning recommend keeping about 46 centimeters of space clear on all sides of your condenser. You should also wash your condenser regularly with water and soap. Gently wipe away dirt from the condenser fins, being very careful that they don’t break. In the offseason, make sure your condenser has a cover and it is secured tightly.
5. Houston, We Have a Mechanical Problem
While annual maintenance is an excellent way to reduce your risk of mechanical breakdowns, they can still happen. Whether it’s a broken fan motor or compressor, a mechanical problem could be the reason your A/C is not cooling properly. If you suspect a mechanical problem, you should call Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning Experts at Razor Heating and Air right away.
6. The Refrigerant in Your Air Conditioner is Leaking
Air conditioners use continuously circulating refrigerant to cool air. Normally the level of refrigerant never changes and your air conditioner is perfectly fine. If you spring a leak, that refrigerant level drops – and so does the amount of cool air you get. Refrigerant leaks can be identified by ice buildup, hissing noises, or a noticeable decrease in cooling efficiency. If you think you have a refrigerant leak, turn off your air conditioner and call us right away. This is a problem that should only be handled by experienced professionals.
7. Your AC Wasn’t Properly Installed
Unfortunately, this is seen all the time with both air conditioners and furnaces. An improperly installed air conditioner just won’t provide the cool air you need in an efficient manner. This is something you’ll notice after you get a new air conditioner. They can provide you with a second opinion, and do what they can to fix any potential problems. The size of your air conditioner is also incredibly important. If it’s too big or too small, you won’t be able to efficiently cool your home. Before you buy an air conditioner, meet with a qualified home specialist who can perform an evaluation and make recommendations.
8. Your Air Conditioner is Over the Hill
There comes a day when even the best air conditioner in the world just gets to be too old. Generally, after 15 years, you want to start paying close attention to how your air conditioner performs. If it gets to a point where you’re spending hundreds of dollars a year to keep it going, or you’re A/C is not cooling your home at all, it’s time for a replacement. The experts at Razor can perform an in-home consultation and walk you through the latest models, making recommendations for your home and your needs.

Temperatures are getting warmer in Saskatchewan. The last thing you want is to have to replace your air conditioner in the middle of summer. Before those warmer days arrive, ensure your HVAC unit is ready for the new season by following these maintenance tips.
1. Remove the Cover and Clean The HVAC Unit
First on the list is the outside unit. Ensure it is turned off, then remove the cover from the unit. Next, you will want to remove leaves and debris that have accumulated around the unit throughout the winter months. Last, do a visual inspection of the unit. If the unit appears damaged, do not turn on the unit until you have had it checked by a professional.
2. Check The Refrigerant Line
On the outside of the unit, you will notice refrigerant lines leading into your home. The larger line is called the suction line. To ensure the air stays cool, the suction line is wrapped in insulation. Check the insulation for cracks or spots that are worn. If insulation is worn, it will need to be replaced. Without proper insulation, your unit will not function effectively nor cool your home efficiently. Each spring, be sure to check the refrigerant line as failing to do so could result in your unit freezing up.
3. Change The Furnace Filter
To distribute cool air throughout your home, your HVAC system uses your furnace’s air filter. If the filter is dirty, your system will have to work harder to supply cold air throughout your home. Since an air filter traps dust, pollen, and other allergens, a dirty filter will result in these allergens being spread throughout your ducts. Changing your furnace filter improves air quality and will ensure your HVAC system is functioning effectively.
4. Ensure The Thermostat Is Working
Not only do you need to check your HVAC unit, but you also need to check your thermostat. Set your thermostat to cool and test your system. Program the thermostat 4-5 degrees lower than room temperature. It may take a few minutes, but you should be able to feel the cool air blowing in. If not, it is time to call in the professionals.
5. Book Your Spring HVAC Maintenance Appointment
Following these tips will help ensure your HVAC system is ready so you can spring into the summer months with ease. However, booking a tune-up is recommended as there may be problems that only a trained technician can recognize. Book your spring maintenance appointment to ensure your HVAC system is fully prepared before the Saskatchewan summer arrives!

Their team takes pride in service knowledge of modern equipment and training. In their latest article, they talk about the effects of a clogged air filter on air conditioning systems.
Clogged air filters are the primary cause of cooling system problems. Is it time to replace your air filter? Learn the effects a clogged air filter has on Air Conditioning systems from the experts at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.
Clogged Air Filters Cause Air Conditioning Units to Work Overtime
When the air filter is clogged with dirt and debris, the Air Conditioning unit must work harder. This is to compensate for the blockage of airflow. When the air filter is dirty, the Air Conditioning unit must work overtime and is not effective at cooling the home. Replacing the air filter every 3 months will protect an Air Conditioning unit from becoming damaged, and can eliminate potential failure.
Clogged Air Filters Increase Energy Consumption
Clogged air filters increase energy consumption, which leads to higher energy bills. Because air conditioning systems rely on a blower fan to recirculate air, a dirty air filter can use up to 15% more energy. The more clogged the air filter is, the harder the fan has to work to draw cool air throughout the home. A clean air filter will allow the air conditioning system to function efficiently, resulting in both energy and cost savings.
Clogged Air Filters Cause Inadequate Cooling of Your Home
Air conditioning systems rely on a blower fan to recirculate air. When the air filter is clogged with dust and debris, the blower fan must work harder to pass air through. This results in reduced airflow. When airflow is reduced due to a clogged air filter, the air conditioning system must work harder to cool the home. The air conditioning system will also have to run longer in order to cool the home to the desired temperature level.
Clogged Air Filters Contribute to Poor Air Quality
When the air filter is clogged, it allows dust and debris to be recirculated back into the home. Poor indoor air quality results in allergies and is problematic for people with respiratory conditions. Replacing the air filter ensures the air conditioning system will recirculate the cleanest air possible. A fresh air filter from JOB Heating & Air Conditioning will result in improved indoor air quality for you and your family this summer.

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Saskatoon Are Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning Pros
Air conditioning not only creates a more comfortable and efficient workplace for clients and employees alike but did you know not having AC might be costing you money? Find out how, and why you should have office air conditioning from JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.
1. Workplace Efficiency
Many studies have proved that an overheated workplace can affect employees' productivity. Shockingly, in most cases employees waste a minimum of one hour of their working time due to heat; in some cases like extremely high temperature, this number can be much higher. Also, employees try to avoid work when they are on the hot seat, and these factors affect employee productivity. Air conditioning systems in the office can reduce the waste of time caused by overheating, and that is a big reason to have air conditioning.
2. Office Air Conditioning Promotes Better Health For Your Employees
Being a great business owner should be a high priority, however, the well-being of your employees should be the number one priority. If your employees enjoy themselves, they are less likely to be sick or irritable. This reduces medical expenses, therefore you get more productivity from employees. Reducing the temperature creates a non-favorable condition for germs to thrive, makes your employees feel better, and helps them stay healthy.
3. Your Clients Are Refreshed
When you install AC in your workplace, not only will your employees feel comfortable, but your clients will as well. You can have your clients or customers come to your office without any hesitation due to discomfort. This increases the chances of your business growing.
4. Comfortable Work Environment
Air conditioning in the office not only gives energy to your employees for hard work, but they work smartly as well. It is a proven fact that people that work in a comfortable environment with proper air conditioning make fewer mistakes. Also, a comfortably cool office can increase the concentration of your employees. Achieving these results is nearly impossible if you have an overheated, uncomfortable office.
5. Saving Money
Most new business owners avoid installing air conditioning in the office due to higher costs and instead, run numerous smaller fans to keep the office cool in summer. The fact is, running these smaller fans costs as much in electricity as air conditioning and often has less desirable results. Indeed, it consumes more power compared to a normal fan, but in the long run, the overall savings are greater with AC. So, if you compare the cost along with the benefits mentioned above, then you can realize the overall savings is more with AC compared to other cooling options.
