Is Your Electrical Panel and Wiring Safe? A Homeowner’s Guide

Hello Saskatoon homeowners! I’m Mitch Brown, owner of Brown Electrical Contracting. Today, I want to discuss something that often gets overlooked but is critical to the safety of your home—your electrical panel and wiring.

Electrical systems are the backbone of your home’s power supply, but many homes, especially older ones, may have outdated or unsafe electrical components. Let’s look at some signs that your home’s electrical panel and wiring may need attention.

Signs Your Electrical Panel May Be Unsafe:

  1. Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips – If your breakers trip often, it could be a sign that your panel is overloaded or faulty.
  2. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks – Any unusual burning smells near the panel or scorch marks on outlets are severe warning signs.
  3. Flickering or Dimming Lights – This could indicate faulty wiring or an overloaded circuit.
  4. Panel is More Than 20-30 Years Old – Older electrical panels may not meet today’s safety standards and should be inspected by a professional.
  5. Fuse Box Instead of a Breaker Panel – If your home still has a fuse box, it may not provide the protection needed for modern electrical demands.

Signs of Unsafe Wiring:

  1. Frayed or Damaged Wires – Visible damage or wear on your home’s wiring can lead to electrical hazards.
  2. Hot or Discolored Outlets and Switches – Overheating outlets can indicate loose wiring or overloading.
  3. Buzzing or Crackling Sounds – Electrical systems should be silent. If you hear buzzing, it could mean a wiring issue.
  4. Aluminum Wiring – Homes built in the 1960s and 70s may have aluminum wiring, which can pose a fire risk if not properly maintained.
  5. Two-Pronged Outlets – These older outlets are ungrounded and could be a safety risk. Consider upgrading to three-pronged, grounded outlets.

How to Ensure Your Electrical System is Safe:

  • Schedule an Electrical Inspection – A professional inspection can identify any issues and help prevent potential hazards.
  • Upgrade Your Electrical Panel – If your panel is outdated, upgrading to a modern breaker panel will improve safety and allow for future electrical needs.
  • Rewire Old or Damaged Wiring—If your home’s wiring is outdated or unsafe, rewiring sections can enhance safety.
  • Install Surge Protection – Whole-home surge protection protects your appliances and devices from power surges.
  • Use Trusted Licensed Electricians – When in doubt, always call a professional to handle electrical work. DIY electrical repairs can be dangerous and lead to code violations.

At Brown Electrical Contracting, we prioritize your home’s safety and efficiency. If you’re unsure about the state of your electrical panel or wiring, call us. A quick inspection today can prevent costly and hazardous problems down the road.

Stay safe and powered up,
Mitch Brown

Conrad at Midtown Appliance World Shares the 5 Most Common Causes of Kitchen Odours

Midtown Appliance World and Saskatoon Appliance carry top North American brands like Bosch, Frigidaire, GE, JennAir, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Whirlpool. In their latest Trusted Saskatoon appliance tip, they go over the most common causes of kitchen odours, and how to clean them.  Midtown Appliance and Saskatoon Appliance Are Your Trusted Saskatoon Appliance Stores

5 Common Sources of Kitchen Odours – And How to Eliminate Them

Have you ever stepped into your spotless kitchen only to be hit by an unpleasant smell? You’ve just cleaned, so what could be causing it?

Odours often linger in unexpected places, hiding in appliances, crevices, and hard-to-reach spots. They can come from food residue, bacteria, or trapped grease, making them tricky to track down.

Read on to uncover the most common culprits of kitchen odours—and how to banish them for good!

The Oven

Your oven may be producing more unpleasant smells than you realize. Over time, grease, food drippings, and burnt residue accumulate, creating odours that can linger even when not in use. Since some buildup isn’t always visible, follow these steps to freshen up your oven:

  • Take out the racks and wash them with warm, soapy water.
  • Wipe down the interior with a damp sponge or cloth, paying close attention to corners and hidden spots.
  • Create a paste using one part baking soda and two parts water, spread it inside the oven, and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  • Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • Replace the racks, then heat the oven to 400°F for about 20 minutes to eliminate any remaining odours.

Regular cleaning will keep your oven odour-free and functioning efficiently!

The Refrigerator

Your fridge is one of the biggest contributors to kitchen odours, thanks to forgotten leftovers, spills, and bacteria buildup. To keep it smelling fresh:

  • Promptly clean up spills and toss expired food.
  • Place activated charcoal in small bowls or use charcoal bags to absorb odours.
  • For a hint of sweetness, roll up a couple of sheets of newspaper, add a drop of vanilla extract, and place them in both the fridge and freezer.

Don’t forget to clean out your freezer as well—odours can settle there, too!

The Garbage Disposal

If a bad smell is coming from the sink area, your garbage disposal could be to blame. Food scraps often get stuck under the blades, leading to foul odours. Here’s how to freshen it up:

  • Switch off the power to the disposal.
  • Drop a cup of ice and half a cup of salt down the drain.
  • Turn on the cold water and run the disposal to clear out debris.

For extra freshness, use a garbage disposal cleaner, occasionally pour in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, or grind up half a lemon to leave a citrusy scent.

The Dishwasher

Since your dishwasher is meant to clean, it’s easy to forget that it needs cleaning itself! Moisture creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew, and leftover food particles can rot, causing bad smells.

To keep your dishwasher smelling fresh:

  • Run a cleaning cycle regularly.
  • Place two cups of vinegar in a measuring cup on the top rack and run a hot cycle once a month.

This simple step helps break down grease and eliminates lingering food particles!

Hidden Gaps Between Appliances and Countertops

Even if your kitchen looks spotless, food crumbs and grease can get trapped in the gaps between appliances and countertops. These tiny spaces become breeding grounds for bacteria, leading to persistent odours.

To clean them out:

  • Wrap a butter knife, yardstick, or broom handle in a paper towel sprayed with kitchen cleaner.
  • Swipe it through the gaps to remove debris.
  • Use a microfiber cloth for a more thorough wipe-down.

Pro Tip: Prevent buildup by using gap covers between your appliances and counters!

Bonus Tips for a Fresher Kitchen

Beyond these five culprits, other areas in your kitchen may be contributing to unwanted odours.

  • Trash Can: If your trash bag is fresh but the can still smells, spray the interior with a disinfectant and let it dry before replacing the bag.
  • Silverware Drawer: Crumbs and unwashed utensils can make your silverware tray a hidden source of odours. Empty the tray monthly, shake out debris, and wipe it down with a mixture of two parts water and one part distilled vinegar.

Pro Tip: If your silverware tray is dishwasher safe, run it through a cycle for a deep clean!

By addressing these common problem areas, you’ll keep your kitchen smelling clean and inviting. But if odours persist and it’s time for an appliance upgrade, check out our selection in-store or give us a call—we’re happy to help!

Trusted Saskatoon Appliance Store Midtown Appliance World Explains How to Best Load a Dishwasher for Spotless Results

Midtown Appliance World and Saskatoon Appliance carry top North American brands like Bosch, Frigidaire, GE, JennAir, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Whirlpool. In their newest Trusted Saskatoon appliance tip, they explain how to properly load your dishwasher for best results.  Midtown Appliance and Saskatoon Appliance Are Your Trusted Saskatoon Appliance Stores

The Best Way to Load a Dishwasher for Spotless Results

Properly loading a dishwasher not only saves you time but also ensures that your dishes come out sparkling clean every time. If you want to get the best performance from your appliance, follow these step-by-step guidelines:

  • Getting the dishwasher ready
  • Organizing and placing utensils
  • Arranging plates and bowls
  • Loading glasses and cups
  • Positioning pots, pans, and cookware
  • Handling cutlery and silverware
  • Adding other dishwasher-safe items
  • Closing and starting the cycle

By sticking to these best practices, you'll make the most of your dishwasher’s capacity, improve cleaning efficiency, and extend its lifespan.

Preparing the Dishwasher

Before loading, take a moment to check that the dishwasher is in optimal working condition. Remove any leftover food scraps from the filter, inspect the spray arms to ensure they aren’t clogged, and verify that nothing is obstructing the interior. These simple steps help ensure better water flow and a more effective wash cycle.

Sorting and Arranging Utensils

To make unloading easier, sort utensils before placing them in the dishwasher. Put forks, spoons, and knives into separate sections of the utensil holder. If your dishwasher has a cutlery tray, use it to keep each type of utensil separate, ensuring thorough cleaning and easy retrieval.

Loading Plates and Bowls

Arrange plates and bowls in a way that promotes maximum water circulation. Place larger plates at the back and smaller ones toward the front, angling them to allow for an even wash. Ensure that dishes are spaced apart so they don’t touch, which helps prevent chipping and ensures better cleaning coverage.

Arranging Glasses and Cups

Glasses and cups should always go on the top rack, upside down, to allow water to reach inside for a thorough clean. For fragile glassware, consider using a stemware holder or silicone grips to prevent movement and potential breakage during the cycle.

Placing Pots, Pans, and Cookware

Most stainless-steel cookware is safe for the dishwasher. When loading, place large pots, pans, and baking sheets on the bottom rack. Angle them so that water and detergent can reach all surfaces, and make sure they don’t block the spray arms or detergent dispenser.

Positioning Plastic Containers and Tupperware

To prevent warping, plastic containers should be placed on the top rack. Secure them to prevent flipping, and avoid overloading the section so water can reach all surfaces effectively. Keeping these items spaced out also helps eliminate lingering odors.

Adding Cutlery and Silverware

To ensure thorough cleaning, mix up the orientation of silverware—place some handles up and some down. This prevents nesting and allows water to reach every surface. Use designated cutlery compartments to keep items separate and avoid scratches or missed spots.

Including Other Dishwasher-Safe Items

Make full use of your dishwasher by adding other washable items like oven racks, stove grates, and range hood filters. Always consult the manufacturer’s instructions before placing these items in the dishwasher to avoid damage.

Running the Dishwasher

Before starting the cycle, double-check that no dishes are blocking the spray arms. Add the appropriate dishwasher detergent, close the door gently, and select the right wash cycle based on the level of dirt and grime. To conserve energy and water, consider using an eco-friendly or energy-saving setting. If you’re running a partial load, select a half-load cycle to reduce unnecessary water and power usage.

Once everything is set, press start and let the dishwasher do the work!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Can stainless steel pots and pans go in the dishwasher?
A: Most stainless-steel cookware is dishwasher-safe, but it’s always best to check the manufacturer’s recommendations first.

Q: Do I need to rinse dishes before loading them?
A: Scraping off food debris is sufficient. Pre-rinsing may actually reduce the effectiveness of dishwasher detergent.

Q: Can I wash wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher?
A: It’s not recommended, as the heat and moisture can cause warping or cracking. Hand-washing is best.

Q: How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?
A: Cleaning it once a month is ideal, but if you notice a decline in performance, more frequent maintenance may be necessary.

Q: Can I use regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent?
A: No, regular dish soap produces too many suds, which can cause overflow and damage the dishwasher. Always use a detergent specifically formulated for dishwashers.

Mastering the art of loading your dishwasher correctly will save you time and ensure that your dishes come out spotless. By following these steps, you’ll maximize space, enhance cleaning power, and help your dishwasher run efficiently for years to come. Cattle Care Is The Foundation of Rebans' Farms Success!

As your go-to Saskatchewan provider for high-quality, pasture-raised beef (and pork now, too), Reban Farms is committed to delivering exceptional local meat products. Learn more about how the family cares for its cattle and meet the passionate team behind this remarkable family farm outside of Saskatoon in Petrofka, on the banks of the Saskatchewan River!

How Does Reban Farms Take Care of Its Cattle?

At Reban Farms, we've been proudly rooted in Saskatchewan for 114 years, and our connection to the land runs deep. Nestled near Petrofka Bridge along the North Saskatchewan River, just south of Blaine Lake, our farm has been a cornerstone of sustainable cattle farming since 1908. Today, we’re sharing how we care for our cattle while ensuring that our farming practices remain sustainable for generations.

A Legacy of Sustainability

“Sustainability” has become a popular buzzword, and rightly so. Consumers today are more conscious about how their food is produced and its environmental impact. At Reban Farms, sustainability isn’t just a trend – it’s been at the core of what we do for over a century. Our farm has thrived for 114 years, proving that long-term sustainability is achievable when you constantly evolve your practices to benefit the land, animals, and the community.

Over the years, we’ve learned to be more efficient with our resources. "We produce way more pounds of beef compared to 40, 30, or even 20 years ago, on far less food, water, and land base. We’re just that much more efficient." This efficiency level allows us to respect the environment while producing high-quality beef.

Animal Welfare is Our Priority, says Aubrey Reban  " It's one of the most important aspects of our farm is ensuring the well-being of our cattle. We take pride in providing them with plenty of space, clean bedding, and fresh water. They’re always clean and dry, with access to as much food as they need. This level of care ensures that our cattle are healthy, content, and productive."

Rotational Grazing: A Key to Land Health

Our cattle aren’t just wandering aimlessly across fields. At Reban Farms, we practice rotational grazing, moving our herds through different paddocks and pastures. This method gives plant species the time to recover and regrow before they’re grazed again. Healthier plants mean healthier cattle and more productive land.

"If we continually graze pastures, the undesirable species—the ones that are less palatable or less nutritious—start to overtake the ones that get continually grazed. Before you know it, you’ve got unproductive pastures." By allowing plant diversity to flourish, we maintain the balance of our ecosystem, ensuring long-term productivity and sustainability.
Soil Health: The Foundation of Sustainable Farming

We also pay close attention to what’s happening below the soil. The health of the land directly impacts the plants and, ultimately, the cattle that graze on it. We assess our pastures based on drought tolerance, flood tolerance, and species diversity. This helps us make informed decisions about how best to manage our land.

“You can easily tell the health of your soil by looking at the plant diversity on your land base and the resiliency of the plants that you grow there. Healthy soil means more nutritious forage for our cattle, which translates into higher-quality beef for you."

Cattle: Nature's Upcyclers

Cattle have an incredible ability to “upcycle.” They turn plants and plant matter humans can’t eat into high-quality protein. Portions of our land that aren’t suitable for crops—whether they’re too sandy, rocky, or have challenging terrain—can still be used for grazing. Our cattle transform this otherwise unusable land into a rich, protein-packed food source for people worldwide. "They turn something undesirable into a highly desirable, protein-rich food source."

Wholesome Beef, From Our Farm to Your Table

We’re blessed here in Saskatchewan with access to land, clean water, and clear air. We produce more resources than we consume, particularly food. At Reban Farms, we’re proud to offer you wholesome, local beef that’s not only packed with nutrition but also produced using sustainable farming practices. Plus, we offer the convenience of free delivery, saving you both time and money.
