Is Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

This may be a sign that your furnace requires attention. Read on to discover reasons why your furnace is blowing cold air.

Your Furnace Has Not Warmed Up

Whenever it is the beginning of a heating cycle, you will get a blast of cold air when you turn on your furnace. Much like when you first turn on a faucet, cold water is going to flow out at first rather than hot. As your furnace warms up, it must first push out the cold air before warm air will blow out of your vents. If your furnace blows cold air briefly, this is likely the explanation. However, if warm air does not follow the cold air after a few minutes, it is time to call in an expert.

The Thermostat Setting Is Incorrect

Ensure the thermostat is set to “AUTO” instead of “ON”. When the thermostat is set to “ON”, the fan will continuously run even when the furnace is not in a heating cycle. This means that the fan will blow cold air throughout your home, instead of warm. The thermostat should always be on “AUTO” to ensure that the fan will only blow during a heating cycle.

The Flame Sensor Is Dirty

The flame sensor detects whether or not your furnace’s gas burners are lit. A dirty flame sensor will keep the gas burner from staying lit, and cause the burners to shut off. This results in cold air blowing from the vents, as the furnace does not have a heat source. Unless you are familiar with furnaces, a dirty flame sensor should always be cleaned by a professional to restore heat.

Your Furnace's Pilot Light Is Out

Especially if your furnace is older, cold air is a sign that the pilot light is out. If you are comfortable doing so, follow your furnace’s instructions on how to relight it. If the flame goes out again after a few minutes, contact a professional as technical work is likely necessary.

Your Furnace's Air Filter Is Clogged

When the air filter is clogged, airflow is restricted. Restricted airflow can cause your furnace to overheat. When your furnace overheats, this shuts down the burner resulting in cold air. Always replace a dirty air filter to ensure your furnace is functioning properly.

These are a few possible reasons why your furnace is blowing cold air. Be sure to schedule your routine furnace maintenance to ensure your furnace is safe to operate this winter. If you need any assistance with your furnace or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

Brent, who was a dispatcher with Gibbon for over five years, knew that if he was running the business he would work hard to make it even more successful and truly put his stamp of honesty and integrity into everything they do. His wife DawneIn talking to Brent, he had mentioned that it’s sometimes tough to be a shining light in an industry that has many dishonest contractors out there who are always trying to upsell the customer and don’t operate with the customer's best interest at heart.

" Brent and The Gibbon team deserve the great reputation they have earned. Helping fundraise for various other causes Brent’s always willing to lend a hand. He’s even helped out with the Cancer Society for years and has participated in the Jail n’ Bail Fundraiser as well.

The ‘Gibbon Gives Back’ brand was created by our Trusted graphic designers, and we donated it to Gibbon’s so they could bring a more local feel to the International Lennox Feel the Love Campaign. This is an annual campaign where Gibbon and Lennox request nominations of local people in dire need of a new furnace. Brent from Gibbon regularly adds more to the donation, with extra services, and has even provided a new water heater. These are just some of the many ways Gibbon Gives Back.

For over 40 years this local, family-owned company has been giving back to our community and is invested in making Saskatoon a great place to live whether you’re new to the city or have lived here all your life. Trusted Saskatoon Plumbing Experts at JOB Heating and Air Conditioning Share 5 Fall Plumbing Tips

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Saskatoon is eager to provide the best possible customer experience. Their aim is to be a professional resource for our clients before, during, and after the sale! Their team takes pride in service knowledge of modern equipment and training. They are recognized by peers and offer sales, service, training & installations for residential, and commercial Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing systems in Saskatoon and area. JOB Heating & Air are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers

In their latest article, Jeff Bolton, JOB's owner, shares their top fall plumbing tips.

5 Fall Plumbing Tips From JOB Heating and Air Conditioning

Here are 5 fall plumbing tips to help protect your home this season.

Tip #1: Disconnect and Store Outdoor Water Hoses

Since outdoor hoses are made from rubber, freezing and thawing weakens the material and causes cracks. Disconnecting hoses in the winter and storing them in an area of your home that does not reach freezing temperatures will ensure the longevity of your hose is maintained. If you leave your outdoor hose connected all winter long, any leftover water can freeze and expand. This causes faucets and any connected pipes inside your home to freeze and potentially burst.

After disconnecting your outdoor house, it is important to check the faucet for any leaks. Faucet leaks can lead to water damage and cause plumbing issues when temperatures drop and things freeze. Once faucets are checked for leaks, it is a good idea to insulate them for further protection.

Tip #2: Shut Off Outside Faucets

Most homes are equipped with an interior shut-off valve for the outside faucets. Be sure to shut off and drain them so there is no remaining water in the outside lines that could freeze and create plumbing issues.

Tip #3: Inspect Your Hot Water Heater and Ensure Maintenance is Completed

The fall season is the perfect time to drain your hot water heater as it needs to work much harder in the cold months to provide hot water to your household. Maintenance includes flushing your hot water heater to remove sediment build up. The sediment build up is important to remove as it causes rust and can block proper heat transfer. Flushing your hot water heater will ensure it is operating efficiently, saving you money on your hot water bills.

If your hot water heater is more than 20 years old it may be time to consider a replacement before something goes wrong. You do not want to be stuck without hot water, especially heading into winter.

Tip #4: Insulate Your Pipes

Be sure to insulate any pipes that may be exposed to cold temperatures such as those in your basement and garage. Insulating your pipes properly will prevent them from freezing in the winter.

It is important to note that it is common for gaps to develop in the areas where pipes enter your home. These gaps between the pipes and the walls allow for cold air to get through. Cold air seepage can lead to pipes freezing and thus increase your heating bill. Luckily these gaps can be sealed using caulking and weather stripping, and taking the time to seal them can prevent larger issues down the road.

Tip #5: Inspect Your Sump Pump

A working sump pump is extremely important to prevent flooding as it removes excess water from the foundation of your property. If your sump pump is left exposed to extreme temperatures it can freeze. Freezing prevents your sump pump from operating correctly and can compromise its ability to protect your home. Be sure to inspect your sump pump this fall to ensure it is working as it should, or have it inspected by a professional if you are unsure.

These are just a few plumbing tips to help protect your home this fall. If you need any assistance with your plumbing, furnace, or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

Trusted Saskatoon Furnace Experts at JOB Have Tips To Help Reduce Your Fall Allergies

In their latest article, they discuss tips to keep your furnace from triggering your allergies this fall.

Tips to Keep Your Furnace From Triggering Your Fall Allergies

Though furnaces do not cause allergies, they can be a culprit for making them worse. When summer ends and you switch your heat on for the first time, all the dust and allergens that have built up in heating ducts end up traveling through the ventilation. This impacts air quality in the household. In keeping allergies away, good air quality is key. Here are a few tips to keep your furnace from triggering your fall allergies.

1. Replace Your Furnace Air Filter

HVAC filters are designed to collect allergens. In order to do their job properly, they need to be replaced regularly. A clean filter is more effective at catching allergens and will improve the overall efficiency of your furnace system. Replacing your HVAC filter regularly is one of the best ways to reduce allergies and ensure everyone in your household can breathe easily.

2. Clean Your Air Ducts

Like HVAC filters, allergens collect over time in air ducts. Air duct cleanings are the best way to ensure these allergens are not spread throughout your home. Investing in air duct cleaning on a regular basis will help ensure good air quality so allergies do not become worse.

3. Routine Furnace Maintainance Reduces Fall Allergies

Routine furnace maintenance is a key step to ensuring your household’s air quality is up to standard. Before switching on your heat for the first time, it is beneficial to have a maintenance inspection to solidify that your filters and air ducts are clean and that your furnace is in good working condition for the colder months. Ensuring your household’s furnace is properly maintained is a great way to prevent low air quality and help keep allergies at bay.

These are just a few tips to keep your furnace from triggering your allergies this fall. If you need any assistance with your furnace or home heating equipment, do not hesitate to contact our team at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at JOB Have Tips to Reduce Water Heater Expenses

JOB Heating & Air Conditioning Saskatoon is eager to provide the best possible customer experience. Their aim is to be a professional resource for our clients before, during, and after the sale! Their team takes pride in service knowledge of modern equipment and training. They are recognized by peers and offer sales, service, training & installations for residential, and commercial Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing systems in Saskatoon and area. In their latest article on water heaters, they share tips on how to reduce water heater energy bill expenses.

Tips to Reduce Water Heater Energy Bill Expenses

Water heaters account for nearly 20% of the average home energy bill. In fact, the only appliance that costs more to run than your water heater is your furnace. If you are looking to cut costs on your energy bill, water heaters are worth paying special attention to. Learn tips to reduce your water heater energy bill expenses from the experts at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

1. Insulate your hot water heater tank and pipes.

If you have a hot water heater tank, ensure it is insulated. Not only does tank insulation prevent heat loss, but it also lowers the risk of fire in the home. The same goes for your hot water heater pipes. If the pipes are not insulated, your water heater has to work harder to heat water. In order to conserve heat energy, it is recommended that you insulate a minimum of 6 feet of piping.

2. Lower the thermostat temperature on your hot water heater.

When your hot water heater comes from the manufacturer, chances are the thermostat will be set to 140 F (60 C). However, a thermostat setting of 120 F (48.88 C) is the hottest you should require. Having a lower thermostat temperature will reduce the risk of mineral buildup and will extend the overall life of your water heater.

3. If your hot water heater is older, be sure to add heat traps.

Heat traps are valves that trap heat energy that would otherwise be lost and can reduce your energy bill by up to $30 each month. Newer hot water heaters will come with heat traps already installed, so it is best to consider an upgraded unit rather than installing heat traps on your existing unit if your current hot water heater may be nearing the end of its life.

4. Use a timer on your hot water heater.

Traditional water heaters typically heat water all night long, which is very inefficient considering you do not use hot water at night. If you do not have a tankless water heater, installing a timer will give your water heater a rest and save you money.

5. Install low-flow faucets in your home.

Though this may seem like a bit of an investment, replacing your faucets with low-flow options can reduce annual hot water usage in your home by up to 60 percent. Installing low-flow faucets will ensure more money stays in your pocket.

6. Schedule maintenance service for your hot water heater.

Often, homeowners will maintain their own hot water heater tank, including draining and cleaning the unit themselves. This often leads to problems and ends up costing more money. It is best to let an experienced professional maintain your hot water heater.

Let the experts at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning ensure your water heater is not costing you more than it should. Schedule your maintenance service today.
