Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts at Superior Share What You Need to Know About Safe Railway Crossing

Superior Auto Body Ltd Saskatoon has been in business since 1961, and they are an SGI ELITE Autobody shop and have been SGI accredited since 1982. There are many reasons they have so many loyal longstanding clients from all over the city, but mostly it is the small, personal touches that they offer to people who have been unfortunate enough to require their services. They offer newer model courtesy cars and vans for clients... and to help out, they also pick up your vehicle and take it to your SGI appointment for you and deliver the courtesy car to you at home. In our latest accident prevention tip, they share advice about safety at railway crossings in Saskatchewan.

RAILWAY CROSSINGS ARE HIGH COLLISION ZONES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BE SAFE

IN A COLLISION WITH A TRAIN, THE TRAIN WILL ALWAYS WIN!

When driving your vehicle around Saskatoon and area roads, it’s easy to think you’re the king of the road. But when that road intersects with railway tracks, be prepared to give up your crown. There are so many rail tracks crisscrossing our province and many of them do not have safety barriers.

Trains are massive columns of speeding metal that can take more than a kilometer to come to a complete stop. As a driver, you need to respect their size and power or risk serious consequences.

Vehicle collisions with trains result in an average of 12 injuries and 2 deaths each year in Saskatchewan. The human cost is tragic, particularly because collisions with trains are entirely preventable.

SASKATCHEWAN RAILWAY CROSSING ISSUES

It’s a dubious distinction for Saskatchewan; a disproportionate number of railway crossings that are judged to be the most dangerous in the country. Of the 500 railway crossings that Transport Canada has assessed as being among the most dangerous in Canada, more than 60 are in this province. Put another way, with only about three percent of Canada’s population, we have an unlucky 13 percent of the crossings on this list.

Transport Canada says this list reflects a number of elements including not only the number of collisions, but also the characteristics of the crossings including:

  • Volumes of rail and vehicle traffic,
  • The type of trains,
  • The number of tracks,
  • Vehicle and train speeds and,
  • Whether these crossings are in rural or urban areas.

Mixed in too, is information from a database of “rail occurrences” maintained by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, including “accident and incident” data.

RAILWAY CROSSINGS – SUPERIOR SAFETY TIPS FOR SASKATOON AND AREA DRIVERS

Be alert and be prepared to stop

As you approach a crossing in the middle of Saskatoon or in rural Saskatchewan – whether marked or uncontrolled – remember to slow down and look both ways. You must stop if you see a train coming since they always have the right of way.

Never try to race through a crossing before a train arrives

They aren’t required to slow down at crossings and their speed can often be difficult to gauge. Trying to save a few seconds by beating the train simply isn’t worth the risk. Regardless of what you drive, in a collision with a train, the train will always win. To reinforce this point, many railway crossings are equipped with electronic warning devices. Their message is simple: stop your vehicle and wait until it’s safe to proceed. Don’t needlessly put yourself in harm’s way by ignoring flashing lights or driving around barrier arms. Even if you make it safely over the tracks, a hefty fine could be waiting for you on the other side. Tickets for failing to obey a stop signal at a railway crossing start at $220.

Exercise caution around railway tracks even if you don’t see a train approaching

A common mistake is stopping on the tracks while waiting for traffic ahead of you to proceed. Not only do you risk a collision with a train, but your vehicle could be struck by the barrier arms if they’re activated. To avoid these situations, stop well behind the barriers and wait until you have enough room to clear the tracks completely.

Be sure to look for multiple sets of tracks

They are indicated by a small numbered sign under the traditional railway crossbuck. Don’t proceed after a train has passed until making sure another isn’t approaching on a different set of tracks.

Watch for other vehicles stopping in front of you

Half of all crashes occurring at crossings are rear-end collisions where the lead vehicle is slowing down or stopping. Pay particular attention to school buses since they are required to stop at all uncontrolled railway crossings. Flashing amber lights will be activated on the bus, giving you plenty of warning before it stops.

Staying safe near trains isn’t complicated. Rather, it’s a matter of knowing the rules and obeying them to ensure that you arrive at your destination safely.

Trusted Saskatoon Collision Repair Pros at Superior Auto Body share information about Polymer Degradation Issues

Superior Auto Body has been in business since 1961, and SGI accredited since 1982... There are many reasons they have so many loyal longstanding clients from all over the city, but mostly it is the small, personal touches that they offer to people who have been unfortunate enough to require their services. They offer newer model courtesy cars and vans for their clients.. and to help out they will actually pick up your vehicle and take it to your SGI appointment for you and deliver the courtesy car to you at home.

Superior Auto Body is a TRUSTED SASKATOON AUTO BODY shop…you will not regret choosing them! In this latest tip they talk about polymer degradation.

WHAT ARE POLYMER PARTS?

Polymer Degradation Issues on wing mirror

A polymer is basically a part that is made up of a string of molecular components that are similar; in other words, plastic, rubber, vinyl, and the like.  When we talk about a vehicle, polymer parts are just about anything that isn’t made out of metal. If you take a look at your vehicle, you probably see polymer parts immediately.  Many polymer parts aren’t painted, they’re made out of polymer plastic designed to be that particular colour.  The trim around the doors is often a polymer.  There’s likely polymer in the grill, around the windows, and often much of the trim all the way around the vehicle.

In essence, a large part of your vehicle is made of polymers, and those polymers are subject to degradation over time. Unfortunately, Saskatchewan weather can speed that process up!

WHAT IS POLYMER DEGRADATION?

There are two basic ways that items break down.  Most of us are familiar with biodegrading material.  That is how organic matter decomposes.  Anything from paper to food scraps, to wood that isn’t maintained will biodegrade.  But man-made items like plastic and Styrofoam break down through a process called photodegrading.  That is, when they’re exposed to light, the components start to break apart and deteriorate. Polymers used on vehicles can degrade in a few other ways as well.  Exposure to air pollution, such as car exhaust, can cause them to degrade faster.  The same goes with dirt, road grime, and other pollutants that can get onto the polymers. When they degrade, they don’t rot in the sense that we think about food and other organic matter rotting.  Instead, they become brittle.  They may crack, fade, or chip.  They’re not as flexible as they once were, and they certainly aren’t as strong as before.

That fading is especially seen in black polymers.  They turn grey and often people mistake their degradation for having leftover wax that wasn’t buffed out.  That can be the case, but most often, it’s not wax.

cleaning your car prevents polymer degradationHOW CAN YOU PREVENT POLYMER DEGRADATION?

Here is the good news! If you take care of your vehicle, you can slow the polymer degradation as it comes along.  It’s all about taking great care of your vehicle.

  • Keeping your vehicle clean of dust, dirt, tar, and grime is the first step to making sure the polymer parts don’t fall apart faster than you hope.  We recommend regular washes, and make sure you have your vehicle detailed twice every year (at very least once per year!).
  • In addition to the detailing, you will want to use a product designed to protect polymers.  Don’t grab the cheapest cleaner you can find, those will often speed up the degradation rather than prevent it.

In Saskatchewan, highway driving is unlike any other province. You need to be constantly watching for the animals by the highway. In their latest blog, they share some tips from SGI about avoiding wildlife collisions in Saskatchewan.

The Auto Body Experts at Superior Auto Body Give Tips on How to Avoid Wildlife Collisions in Saskatchewan

Avoiding Wildlife Collisions

Part of living in Saskatchewan means dealing with Wildlife on and around the roads. There is a serious human cost to this issue – on average 327 people are injured and 4 are killed each year by wildlife collisions. While encountering wildlife is inevitable, especially as we travel to and from lake land there are some ways drivers can reduce their risk of a collision with our wildlife.

Know the Peak Times

The time of day and year can seriously affect wildlife activity around roads. Be extra alert for wildlife in May and June when animals venture towards roads to like road salt. During mating season in late fall and early winter animals are also very active. Year round the peak times for animal collisions are dawn and dusk, so be extra careful when driving in this time frames.

Always be Alert

Scan from shoulder to shoulder while driving to check for animals approaching the road. If you see an animal on the side of the road, slow down and pass by cautiously. If you encounter an animal that has ventured on the road, slow down under control and honk your horn to attempt to scare the wildlife away. Avoiding slamming on your brakes and swerving, as this may cause you to lose control and veer into a ditch or oncoming traffic. As with most traffic safety tips, maintaining a safe speed for the weather conditions is important for avoiding wildlife collisions.

When the Collision is Unavoidable

Sometimes collisions with wildlife are unavoidable even if you take every precaution and remain alert at the wheel. In these circumstances, try to remain calm. From the experts themselves, here is a list of tips that will help in this situation:

  • Aim your vehicle at the spot where the animal came from, not where it's going
  • Try for a glancing blow rather than a head-on encounter and let up on your brake just before you collide. This causes the front of your vehicle to rise slightly and reduces the chances of the animal going through your windshield.
  • Hitting an animal can be an extremely traumatic experience. If possible, move to the shoulder and turn on your hazard lights. Take a moment to regain your composure and then assess the damage to your vehicle.
  • Do not approach the animal, especially if it appears to be wounded. Injured animals can be extremely dangerous.
  • Call the police or your local RCMP detachment if there are human injuries or significant damage to your vehicle. If the damage is less severe, you may continue driving and follow regular SGI claims reporting procedures.
