Programmable and Smart Thermostat: Which One is Best For You?

A new thermostat is a relatively small investment that delivers great rewards. If you are currently using a manual thermostat in your home, it is important to know what your options are.

With both a programmable and smart thermostat, it gives you the opportunity to feel more confident in your energy savings, environmental footprint, and ability to maintain a comfortable home throughout the year. Modern thermostats are digitized, accurate, and capable of providing more usability than their older style manual counterparts did. But what is the difference between a programmable and smart thermostat?

Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat allows you to set automatic schedules for heating and cooling, delivering the temperature you require at the time you want. This is a great feature if you are away from your home during the day, allowing you to set a temperature so your system is not running when no one is home but kicks in when you typically return for the day.

Programmable thermostats are very convenient since you do not have to manually increase or decrease the temperature. You could also save money on your energy bills with the ability to not run your heating or cooling unit while not at home.

Smart Thermostat

You can further maximize your overall experience with a smart thermostat that’s right for your indoor space. Smart thermostats learn from your behaviour and start making the temperature adjustments on their own over time.

Smart Thermostats can be very beneficial, however there are a couple things to remember with this application. They are Wi-Fi enabled thermostats meaning the more Wi-Fi usage in your home, the slower the entire system can be. Many times the installation of a Wi-Fi stat requires an additional “fast stat” that is installed to communicate between the equipment (kind of like a mini router).

A benefit of the smart thermostat being Wi-Fi enabled is that they can be adjusted through an app accessible from your cell phone or computer.

Programmable or Smart, Which Should You Pick?

It depends! Your choice depends on what works best for you and your home. Regardless of which one you choose, making the upgrade to a digital thermostat from a manual thermostat is a great decision to better control your heating and cooling and optimize your home’s investment.

High-Pressure Sales Tactics: Do Your Research

Claims of high-pressure sales tactics, as well as false, incorrect or misleading information about natural gas appliance sales have been skyrocketing. The claims include salespeople being intentionally vague about the funding source of a rebate or offer, and has resulted in customers assuming the salesperson is a government or SaskEnergy rebate. They are not.

SaskEnergy and SaskEnergy Network Members do not allow or conduct door-to-door sales activities. As a precaution, we are encouraging homeowners to do their research before signing a contract or investing in new heating and cooling equipment.

Unfortunately, there has been many cases where customers have felt pressured into quickly signing agreements without fully understanding what they are agreeing to or the cost of the equipment they are agreeing to buy or rent.

“Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, thoroughly review financing contracts and fine print before you sign, research the company, and shop around by gathering quotes from other local contractors.” said Carolyn Bagnell, Executive Director for MCAS, in a news release.

If a contract has already been signed, and the homeowner feels they have been misled on the service, equipment or cost, they have the ability to halt the transaction within 10 days of signing the contract. Misleading sales tactics can come from door-to-door selling or from phone calls from telemarketers trying to sell or rent you heating and cooling equipment.

Lodge a Complaint

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning wants to help keep everyone as safe as possible during these times. If you have experienced misleading heating and cooling equipment sales tactics, we encourage you to call the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) of the Government of Saskatchewan at 306-787-5645 or 1-877-880-5550 (menu option #1) to lodge a formal complaint.

Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning Experts at Gibbon Heating and Air Explain Why Air Conditioners Freeze

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 30 Years,  a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all your heating and cooling needs. They provide prompt, courteous and professional service. In their latest Air Conditioning Tip they explain why air conditioning units freeze up.  Gibbon Heating and Air Conditioning are TRUSTED SASKATOON Air Conditioning & Furnace Professionals

So, Why Do Air Conditioners Freeze Up?

Here are a few idea’s to keep in mind:

AC PROBLEM: Clogged Air Filter

One symptom that causes a majority of air conditioning issues is a dirty air filter. When your air filter isn’t cleaned/replaced monthly, dust and dirt can build up and obstruct proper air flow. In turn, this causes your refrigerant to over-cool and freeze any condensation located on your air conditioner.

AC SOLUTION:

Inspect your air filters monthly. If you see dirt beginning to form, give it a clean . We recommend to clean or replace your filters every 4-12 weeks. If the filter looks unrecognizable, the best option is to replace your air filter.

AC PROBLEM: Low Refrigerant

Another symptom is low refrigerant levels. This can be one of the key causes for your air conditioner freezing up. This culprit can be at the center of many issues you’re experiencing with your AC unit. In regards to freezing, a low level of refrigerant will cause the evaporator coils to freeze over. Your refrigerant can run low when you have a leak, caused by holes or cracks anywhere in your system

AC SOLUTION:

Contact Gibbon Heating to access the situation. NOTE: R22 refrigerant is no longer manufactured. In most instances your old R22 system will likely need replacement.

AC PROBLEM: Drainage Issues

Frozen pipes AirconditioningThe main drainage issues are:

  • Dirt causing a blockage
  • The drain line and pipe are loose.

When it comes to a blockage, the water can be disrupted by dirt buildup and can eventually cause the air conditioner to freeze up. When your drainage pipes are loose, the water will begin to leak all around the air conditioning system and later freeze over if the leak isn’t cleaned.

AC SOLUTION:

During humid days, check on your drainage pipes. Be sure you see water traveling through the drainage system. If you’re experiencing a clogged drainage pipe, contact us to make an assessment.

AC PROBLEM: Thermostat Levels

Blasting your AC can be an easy way to turn your air conditioner into an ice cube.By frequently placing your thermostat at a low temperature, you’re producing a higher risk of freezing your coils.

AC SOLUTION:

To help with that, do not drop the temp down below 21-22 deg C. If you have a programmable stat, set it the sameway you do heat in the winter (this saves money and is not so hard on your system)

AC PROBLEM: Fan Malfunction

A faulty fan is another issue that can result in a frozen air conditioner. Good indicators for a fan malfunction is if you’re not feeling any air out of the registers. Check that the system is on. Condensation will build up over time. The overage of condensation can build up on your AC coils and result in them freezing because of lack of air flow.

AC SOLUTION:

If the fan is damaged or simply not working, call Gibbon Heating and Air and we can can help get you up and running\

Review from clients who received a new furnace from Gibbon.

I was so impressed with the service - right from the initial call to provide a quote, through the whole installation process, and the final return visit to check on the installation and functioning of our new furnace. Upon meeting Brent who provided the quote, I felt confidence in this company. He was courteous, professional and very knowledgeable. His crew that came to install the furnace, Aaron and David were awesome! They were friendly, professional and took great pride in their work. Their team work and work ethic are very admirable too. They cleaned up after their work was done and made sure to go over things with me. Brent returned several days later to see how things were working with the new furnace and reviewed everything with me again. I'm more than happy that we chose this company to replace our old furnace with a new one! Thank You!

Review from clients who received a new water heater from Gibbon.

We phoned Gibbon in the morning to have a water heater replaced. They were able to have an installer come that afternoon. Brett was the technician who came. He was very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. The first thing he did was to place a mat down the staircase to keep the carpet clean - impressive. When he encountered an unexpected problem, he did not get upset. When Brett needed a different model than what had been requested, Daniel brought it quickly and moved the items in and out of the house handily. Brett and Daniel worked efficiently and effectively to complete the job. Brett was professional in his advice, explanation of the billing and the operation of the heater. The cost was as had been quoted. Overall, we were quite impressed and we will use the services of Gibbon again if and when needed. Don and Marg S

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning Share Plumbing Issues To Look Out For

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years, Gibbon is a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their Saskatoon Heating & Air Conditioning and Plumbing related requirements! In their latest article Brent from Gibbon says some plumbing issues to look out for. Gibbon Heating and Air Conditioning are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers

A History of Professionalism, A Foundation of Trust

HIDDEN PLUMBING ISSUES THAT COULD LEAD TO COSTLY REPAIRS FOR HOME BUYERS

Shopping for a new house? Whether it’s your first time buying a home or your fifth, knowing what you’re getting into before you sign on the dotted line is always a smart financial move. All too often, people purchase properties only to find out later that they require a great deal of costly residential plumbing and heating work. While many Saskatoon plumbers will assess the plumbing and heating setup in a house for a fee, there are some simple ways to identify common plumbing issues that could cost you a significant amount in repairs, down the road.

What Water Pressure Can Tell You

Whenever you go to look at a house, it’s always a good idea to run the water in the sinks or a shower to see the strength of the water pressure. If the pressure is weak, you can typically conclude that the residential plumbing is old, and that the galvanized steel or cast iron pipes that were commonplace in houses plumbed before the 1960’s have started to corrode.

Slow Drainage is a Concern

Like water pressure, the rate at which water drains in a house will give you an idea of whether or not there could be a larger plumbing issue. Slow drainage could be caused by much more than just a blocked pipe. In some cases, it’s a sign that the house has old drainage pipes that need to be replaced. This is something you could confirm with the help of Saskatoon plumbers, but especially in older homes, replacing a main drainage pipe can be costly because they’re often difficult to access. If the drainage pipe is in the floor or behind a wall, you’ll have to hire other trades people to get to it.

Water Stains are Signs of Larger Residential Plumbing Problems

When you walk through a house, be on the lookout for water stains on ceilings, walls and baseboards, in kitchen and bathroom cupboards, around the shower and any other place where there’s plumbing. If there’s blistered paint on any of the walls in the home, that too is a sign that there’s been a leak in plumbing. In addition to water stains, check the floor around the base of the toilets and bathtubs or showers. If the floor springs back when you apply pressure, it’s a good indication that water has been leaking from the fixtures. These types of issues will not only require you to hire a plumber, but also a trades person to repair the rotten flooring, all of which can add up quickly.

Beyond the visible signs, make note of a mildew smell. A musty smell is a guarantee that there is or has been some type of moisture issue in the past, and whether it was caused by leaky plumbing, flooding or anything else, it’s never a good sign.

Check the Furnace Filter

A clogged furnace filter can put a lot of strain on a furnace. Take a moment to remove the furnace filter (hopefully there is one installed) and see how dirty it is. It’s a simple test that will give you some insight on how well the previous owners took care of important plumbing and heating systems in the home.

If you find a house that you really like but you’ve identified one or more of the plumbing and heating warning signs I’ve mentioned here, you can always hire Saskatoon plumbers to confirm your suspicions. They can also give you an idea of what it will cost to repair or replace the plumbing.
