Trusted Saskatoon Auto Body Experts at Superior Share Why Colour Matching is Vital To Repairs

Superior Auto Body Ltd Saskatoon has been in business since 1961, and they are an SGI ELITE Autobody shop and have been SGI accredited since 1982. There are many reasons they have so many loyal longstanding clients from all over the city, but mostly it is the small, personal touches that they offer to people who have been unfortunate enough to require their services. We offer newer model courtesy cars and vans for our clients... and to help out, we will also pick up your vehicle and take it to your SGI appointment for you and deliver the courtesy car to you at home. In our latest accident prevention tips, we share the reason correct paint matching is vital to auto body repairs.

When your vehicle is involved in an accident, you want to have it repaired as close to new condition possible. One of the most technically challenging parts of auto body and collision process is paint matching and the final finish.

We have all seen auto bodywork rolling around the streets of Saskatoon that is not up to par, and it often looks worse than the original accident. If the entire panels have been replaced, there is often a noticeable difference between the new panel and the rest of the car because of mismatched paint. It is the job of the team at Superior Auto Body to make sure your vehicle looks as good as new, and this is a challenge as paint matching is one of the most difficult skills to master.

When your car or truck was newly painted at the factory, the entire body was painted at the same time from the same batch of paint. This ensures that all the parts of the car are EXACTLY the same colour and shade of paint. Paint matching is an art, and only an experienced and accredited auto body shop can accurately match new paint to an original finish. All automotive paints have codes specific to the colour, but there are thousands of variations and shades. Additionally, colour variations from original are inevitable because of normal aging. When a car has been on the road for a few years, there is a normal fading of the color. Even if a new batch of paint is mixed to factory specifications, there may still be a noticeable difference, and this is where the skill of the body shop comes in.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE EXACT COLOUR TO MATCH?

There is a tag, usually inside the door jamb, with code numbers and one of these codes is the paint color for your car. This number is used to correctly match the paint should a repair ever be necessary. The number of colors available is staggering, even basic colors such as black and red have dozens, if not hundreds of different shades. In addition, the older the vehicle, the more difficult it may be to match the paint. At this point insurance coverage has some influence on the repair work. If a door panel on an older car needs to be repaired after a collision, a good body shop should be able to match the paint to your satisfaction. There are blending techniques that allow new paint to lightly overspray old paint to achieve a transition that is not noticeable. In some cases, it may not be possible to match the paint due to weathering and fading, and it may be necessary to paint the entire side of the car.

Any accident is an unpleasant experience that you want to put behind you. One important step is having your car repaired properly, and the best way to do that is to use an experienced auto body and collision repair shop like Superior Autobody; a repair shop that warranties their work, will repair the hidden damage that may not be apparent for a month after the accident and stands by their work.

Our team at Superior takes pride in their workmanship… as we always say, “When we get through it’s just like new”.

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Repair Pro's at Phobia Auto Explain Why They Don't Allow Customers to Supply Parts

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Repair & Service Experts at Phobia Auto are based in Martensville and they are a trusted source for honest advice and qualified auto service and repairs. People ask all the time why you can't supply your own parts when they come into Phobia Auto. If you are wondering why Phobia Auto answer the question in the tip below. Phobia Auto Are Trusted Saskatoon & area Auto Repair & Service Specialists.

Phobia Auto Will Not Allow Customers to Supply Parts

Reason # 1: Warranty

The main reason is the warranty. Phobia Auto offers at the 1-year part and labour warranty on almost everything they install (depending on the manufacturer or if it says a used major component.)

Reason # 2: Who Takes the Blame

Warranty can be a sticky situation. Let’s say a customer supplies a power steering pump they bought online. They install it and it’s a faulty pump (this is a real word thing). The customer is now on the hook for taking the part off and putting another on. Paying the labour twice. Phobia pays insurance on every part that comes through the door to allow them to eat these labour costs in a situation like this.

Reason # 3: Auto Repair Shops Get Discounted Parts

Also, don’t forget that they get thousands of dollars worth of parts from the local jobbers. They should be entitled to get the parts a few dollars cheaper than the customer that buys a set of pads and a water pump every two years. So yes, they make money on parts. They must! Shop owners have a responsibility to pay their techs on time so that they can put food on the table while setting aside money for themselves as independent owners. Running a successful shop is very…..very expensive!

Reason # 4: Liability

The shop could be legally liable for failed parts. If they had installed a part that you had bought, and that part failed and caused an accident, Phobia Auto could be held legally liable. Why does that matter? Like many shop owners, Phobia Auto owners have poured their life savings into their businesses. The liability for installing a part you had purchased, in order to save a few bucks, isn’t worth that risk to a business owner’s personal and professional livelihoods.

Reason # 5: Wrong Parts

Another issue we used to run into was wrong parts. Customers would be confident they had the right part they bought online. But they forgot to pay attention to if they had a 4x4 or a certain option that changed the part. Phobia Auto would have a dismantled vehicle on the hoist. Some customers would offer to get a new part from online but leaving them with a hoist tied up for days.

Many people can feel intimidated walking into an auto repair shop. Steve and his team at Phobia Auto have a reputation of being respectful and honest and they pride themselves on setting people at ease from the minute they walk through the door of their shop in Martensville. Who doesn’t want peace of mind when it comes to their vehicle?  Phobia Auto in Martinsville is a Trusted Saskatoon & area Auto Repair Shop & they are Trusted Saskatoon Performance Vehicle Specialists. In their first tip, owner Steve shares his story.

Phobia Auto's Owner Steve Shares His Story.

Before I was a professional mechanic I’d work on my own things. That’s how I discovered and honed my passion and eventually decided to making it my profession. Like most customers, before I had training and education I would often question if I was doing it right and would sometimes take my vehicles to a repair shops to get advice. It’s a tough industry when it comea to trust and many  people have a phobia about taking vehicle into the mechanic. I have been on both sides and understand the stress related to auto repair. But the fact is today a “mechanic” is actually a “technician” and most have more training than those who choose other career paths, we are experts in our trade.

Times Have Changed In The Auto Industry

A mechanics role has changed and adapted rapidly over the last decade. Today’s vehicles aren’t what they used to be.  For comparison, think how much cell phones have changed in 20 years, cars have changed 10 times more.

Looking back to the 1970s, most passenger vehicles lasted no more than a few years and 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometres) at the high end. Back then, people traded vehicles every two to four years. In fact, odometers in the early ’70s registered 99,999 miles before going back to zero.

Starting in the 1980s, however, the life expectancy of vehicles began to increase. this was in part due to improved quality, better warranties, proper maintenance, competition, and other factors. By the year 2000, 33% of vehicles in Canada lasted at least 15 years, and by 2017, upwards of 54% of vehicles last for at least 15 years, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

Today, the average life expectancy of a vehicle in Canada is 12.88 years, compared to 15.36 years in the U.S. I often hear “they don’t make them like they used to” and I couldn’t agree more. The make them more reliable, more efficient and longer lasting. A properly maintained vehicle today will last 500,000+km I can’t say the same for the 1970s. Today’s vehicles are made of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steel, magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys, carbon fibre, and polymer composites. Plus, improvements to the internal combustion engine and computerized technology have led to better fuel economy and overall performance.
Regular maintenance is another factor in vehicle shelf life. When motorists perform recommended maintenance (tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation, etc.), their vehicles perform more efficiently and economically, and they last longer.

Why Phobia Auto?

The word phobia is to fear or have an aversion to something. My drive then and now is wanting to help change the negative feelings people have about the industry I am so passionate about. I do not believe anyone should fear or feel stressed about taking a vehicle in for repairs.  I want to take the 'Phobia out of Auto Repair'  by showing customers how great their experience can be. As Phobia, we have a great team and we provide exceptional customer service. Our loyal customers have learnt the there is nothing to fear  here, Phobia is a name you can trust.
