Trusted Saskatoon Brags About Imagery Photography, A Trusted Saskatoon Photographer!

TrustedSaskatoon.com is so proud to partner with Imagery Photography and tell you why as we brag about this Trusted Saskatoon Photographer!

It seems like everyone who runs in “photographic circles” knows Imagery’s founder, Milton Taylor. Milton started Imagery Photography in 1977 out of a desire to be independently successful – and over the past 35 years has become a name that is synonymous with quality and artistry. As you can imagine, a lot has changed in the photographic industry over 35 years – the technology is very advanced as compared to the old equipment and processes. Milton comments,

“There is more to creating a portrait than a magic camera and photoshop skills… our strength is in our experience, our background in technical training, and our ability to understand the fundamentals – lighting, posing, and the mechanics of exposure.”

Considering that Milton is a Master of the Photographic Arts, we truly believe that at Imagery Photography Saskatoon, you are dealing with the experts!

Your experience with Imagery begins with the initial consultation, where Milton gets to know a bit more about a person, and really listens to what you, the client, want from your session. This is crucial to the success of the shoot because this is where Imagery works with you to discover what style of portraiture will make you the happiest, whether it be journalistic, static, traditional, or environmental.

Listening to their clients is key to their success… Imagery Photography strives to give you the portraits that you will cherish. From this point, you then book your session (with a rain date chosen just in case!), and after that, a client comes back in to sit with Milton for the initial projection. This is where you can review all of the photos in the shoot with your photographic team to choose your favourites. After that, you are emailed your choices to make your final decisions, and then you are ready to order.

We all know that there are different reasons that people do what they do… some do it for the money, some do it for recognition, and some do what they do because they are passionate about it and genuinely love their craft. When we asked Milton what he loves the most about his work, he responded,

“I love working in the environment, working with 3 or 4 generations of family, and working with young couples in love… you can see the passion people have for each other. Things in life will catch your eye if they catch your heart – these are the things you should pursue.”

Essentially, Milton sees himself as a historian – and this is where the artistry really comes into play.

“This work will be seen 50, 60, 100 years from now.”

Imagery Photography works in collaboration with many photographers in the province, hoping to elevate the standards of the industry and the profession as a whole. Milton does quite a bit of mentoring, and the attitude is always that someone once took the time to share knowledge with him, and this is his way to give back to the profession. He states,

“Having a cake and eating it by yourself is no fun. This is my cake and I’m sharing it!”

Asked about retirement, Milton always says he’s retiring on the first... the first time he doesn’t enjoy it anymore, that is! Well. here’s to many more years!!!!!

J & S Picture Frame Warehouse Explain Why the Right Glass is Important in Framing Projects

The J & S Picture Frame Warehouse team believes that your pictures deserve the best! They simply offer the best selection of materials to preserve your treasures, keepsakes, and works of art in Saskatoon. J & S Picture Frame Warehouse are your Trusted Saskatoon Picture Framers. In their latest tip, they explain why the right glass is important to use on your framing projects.

The Right Glass is So Important to Use on Your Framing Projects

There are many kinds of glass to choose from when you are framing your pictures. You need to ask yourself if there are lots of windows and lights in the space that you will be hanging your pictures. The most important thing about glass is that it protects your artwork from dust and the environment. The UV rays can destroy your artwork in a very short time. There are 3 options for UV protective glass: Museum glass, UV clear glass, and UV reflection control. We believe that if something is worth framing, it is worth protecting with the best quality glass and acid-free materials. We see so many things that have been hanging for a few years and they are faded and very often we are not able to replace them.

Museum glass is the most expensive, but it truly is the best. It is 99% UV protective and it is clear so it will not have that annoying reflection.

UV Reflection Control glass is also 99% UV protective, but it is chemically etched on one side so that you don’t get an undesirable reflection. You will also lose some of the brightness and sharpness from your artwork. It is nice on bright coloured photographs, not on something with soft colour and fine lines.

UV Clear glass is also 99% UV protective but you do get a reflection, especially if you hang your picture across from a window or even hanging near table lights. You do not lose any brightness or detail but you do get that annoying reflection.

There is also just clear glass, the kind that comes in those big box store frames, the inexpensive ones. If you have an old photo or anything that is one of a kind, do not put your one and only piece in it. It will fade out in a few years and you will be very unhappy. As well, you need acid free materials to back your picture. Regular clear glass is the least costly and is OK to use on something that can be replaced easily or something that you know you will not want to keep for a long time.

Non-reflective glass is chemically etched on one side so you don’t get a reflection, but it will not stop your art or photo from fading. The poor mountain lion photographed below has turned blue from being framed in glass that isn’t UV protective.

Trusted Saskatoon Photography Expert at Imagery Photography Explains The Evolution Of Photography

Photographs... memories and precious moments in our lives captured in time with a click of a camera shutter. These are the occasions and days of our lives that only happen once. Trust the professionals at Imagery Photography Saskatoon with your special moments because they understand the importance these memories hold and work with you to ensure that they stay with you for a lifetime. Imagery is your Trusted Saskatoon photographer and in this latest article, owner Milton shares his thoughts on the evolution of photography.

The Evolution Of Photography

Everything moves and shifts with the slow march of time until not much of the past normals are left to be sifted from the sands of the new.

There’s no question that tech has made us much more portable than we ever were. The equipment itself is far more sophisticated and capable — we can see what we are shooting in real-time; we can fine-tune everything to whatever our needs are. We are now able to transmit our pictures from anywhere we can get an internet connection.

When I started, everything was dependent on processed film, which meant having to bring film, a darkroom kit including enlarging and print-making equipment, and a transmitter (very much like a souped-up fax machine). We’d have to find or at least arrange for a telephone line and telephone access when we needed to send our images. The phone lines were all analog, and each picture took around 10 minutes to send — if the line was interrupted for any reason, we’d have to start over. If we got out 10 images in a day, that was huge.

Photographers now can send wide arrays of photos multiple times during the day. The upside of all of this is more time on the scene providing coverage and more choices sent. The smartphone has killed the lower-end camera market, and if it hasn’t killed the mid-range market, it’s sure breathing down its neck. Everyone has a camera with them now at all times, and there's no doubt that we're seeing images that we never before could have contemplated. As we all know, it’s not just still images but also video.

I think it’s the ultimate democratization of photography — anyone at any time from anywhere can produce images that can affect how we think of the world around us. I feel that the common misconception in the debate is that photography has a set value for everyone. I always try to see it in the same way as food shopping. Some of us love to eat, we love to cook, and we love to discover new restaurants.

We spend a disproportionate amount of our income at local farmers' markets, high-end supermarkets, and new openings. It matters to us and it’s something we want to invest in. Others want to spend their money on cars or clothes. That’s fine; they won’t be spending $200 on dinner, because they see no value in it. Photography is very much the same. If a client perceives the value of the event photography to be $100, then they are going to spend $100; a client looking for a $1200 photography delivery is not going to book a $100 photographer.

With each advance in the cellphone market, I wonder what the long-term prognosis is for the high-end cameras. The next evolutionary phase of photography might not be a progression in the way we make images. Instead, it’s quite possible the next unseen horizon will come from the way we share those images with the world or how we store them for ourselves. If a photograph indeed captures a memory, what use is that memory unless it can more tangibly be recalled? Looking back in the history of photography has each subsequent advancement not strived to make the photo more qualitative, more lasting, and more real?

J & S Picture Frame Warehouse Share 6 Reasons Why You Should Consider Framing

The J & S Picture Frame Warehouse team believes that your pictures deserve the best! Locally owned and operated, they constantly strive to bring their customers the best materials, advice and workmanship for all of your framing needs. They simply offer the best selection of materials to preserve your treasures, keepsakes and works of art in Saskatoon.  J & S Picture Frame Warehouse are your Trusted Saskatoon Picture Framers. In their latest article Read their 6 top tips about custom picture framing

# 1 - Aesthetic Component:

The aesthetic component of a custom frame can enhance your artwork, photo or keepsake -- giving your piece that special finished look.  As well as adding some PIZZAZZ to your home décor and showing your own taste and style. J & S Picture Frame Warehouse is a qualified picture framing designer and they will help you with your choices.

"We chose warm mats and a golf frame and fillet for this Venice painting. It really suited it."

# 2 - Preservation:

The practical or preservation part of custom framing helps to ensure the piece is protected from fading and the breaking down of the art to become damaged.  Preservation of custom framing helps to prevent damage to art before it's too late. When your art has been damaged, it is almost impossible to restore it without the help of a professional restoration expert. For any piece that is valuable, collectable, or just has great sentimental value to you -- it's important to use the right materials to preserve it in order for proper protection.

# 3 - Custom Framing:

Custom framing can be applied to almost anything. From one painting to a photo, to needlework, or any 3-dimensional keepsakes. Don't be put off by the term Custom Framing.

People often associate it with being expensive, which isn't always the case. At J & S, they use options to prevent expensive pricing for their customers. They can use a stock frame and then customize the matting and glazing to protect your artwork, or they can use a moulding that is not so costly. Show the framing experts and they will do their best to work within your budget.

"This picture was to be placed in a man cave. We matched a rusty looking frame up with the rust on the truck. The results were outstanding."

# 4 - Customizing Mirrors:

Framed mirrors can add so much to your living space.

Mirrors can make your room look larger and lighter with the right placement. A framed mirror will also add character and style to your space.

# 5 - Old Photo Restoration:

Old family photographs, old wedding photographs, and birth certificates can be restored to look like new.

At J & S, they do this by scanning the damaged piece and using the computer to restore it to its original state. The piece is then printed on acid-free paper, using UV inks so they will last for generations to come. The file can be kept by you to share with the rest of your family. You can now frame that piece of family history and enjoy it every day. It is protected, no matter the age. It's fun for younger generations to learn about their family history and to be proud of their heritage.

# 6 - Beware of DIY Framing:

Beware of DIY Framing. It may be fun to do your own framing by using old frames and frames from the big box stores. You can actually ruin an art piece or collector piece because of the quality of the materials used.

TO MAT OR NOT TO MAT YOUR ARTWORK & PHOTOGRAPHS . . .

Have you ever wondered why mats are used in framing artwork and photographs?

Martha Stewart shares some matting examples here :

Well, they serve several purposes.  One of the main purposes is to protect the piece in which you are framing.   Artwork and photographs over time, and with temperature changes, can stick to the glass if there is no barrier in between the piece and the glass. Glossy photographs are the most likely to stick to glass – matte finish papers usually won’t.

A piece of fine art should be allowed to ‘breathe’ in the frame (expand and contract) and the mat allows for that. The mat serves as a layer of protection so that the image is not in contact with the glass.  Especially if you have an original piece of art (like a pastel) or a photograph that you want to preserve for years to come.

No Mat vs Mat

Another way that mats are used is to make an image stand out.  When you mat your image it can help by adding depth and dimension to your piece, thus making the eye focus in on the image.  It can also help enhance certain colors in the piece making them pop off the page.  If you would like to add more depth and dimension to your work you can double or even triple mat your piece.  Also, if you have a small image, instead of enlarging it you can put a larger mat on it, making the piece overall a lot bigger.

Most picture framers will have dozens of colors and textures to choose from to help enhance your piece and help you show off your precious piece of artwork and photographs, as well as show off a little of your personality at the same time.

Double Mat

Always choose mats that are acid-free so they will not harm your artwork or photographs and the bevel will not yellow over time.

So…. to mat or not? Some pieces of art need to be matted; pastels (so the color doesn’t transfer to the glass), needlework, shiny photos, and delicate papers like rice paper.

It also comes down to budget  – single mat vs triple mat – and personal preference. Same with the width of mats. I love the look of a wide mat on a piece of art… others don’t.
