The Benefits of a Home Bathroom Renovation By Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In this Trusted Saskatoon plumbing Tip, Centennial Plumbing share the benefits of a home bathroom renovation.

Benefits of a Home Bathroom Renovation

Ah, the bathroom! Known as the most popular room in your home, this essential space gets the most wear and tear, even when compared to your kitchen. You may be content with your current lavatory — but what about giving it an upgrade? Sure, it might be a significant investment, but it will be worth it in the end. How so? Let us explain:

1. Modernizes the Space

When it comes to bathrooms, nine out of ten times your space could be outdated. You know what we’re talking about: your tub has seen better days, the vanity is cracked, and your toilet is finished in an abnormal colour (we’re looking at you, blue toilets). Of course, these are all cosmetic enhancements — but when you replace these features, they’ll all manage to tie the room together in the end. Another benefit of modernizing the space is that it will increase your home’s resale value. When you’re looking to sell your home, potential buyers will be looking at every square inch of the space. Of course, buyers go into each house knowing that they might need to make a few changes, but usually, a modern bathroom is the icing on top of the real estate cake. Believe it or not, updating your lavatory can help sell your home in a heartbeat!

2. Personalizes It

Another great benefit of renovating your bathroom is that it will give your home a personal touch! Sometimes, recent home buyers will renovate their lavatory last — unless the toilet, sink, or shower/tub don't work, or have seen better days. Of course, if you’re looking to make your bathroom more personal, then giving it some professional TLC from Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical will make the space fit well in your home, in addition to accommodating your lifestyle, too! One of the best ways to renovate your bathroom is to replace the tile. Sometimes, the original tile can be dingy, cracked, or not in a preferred colour/theme. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much of a difference new tile can make in any bathroom! Another excellent renovation change is to upgrade your shower curtains for shower doors! Not only will this be the best way to help water stay in your tub, but it will also open up the room completely! No matter what style of shower doors you choose, a bathroom renovation from Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical will make a big, beautiful difference!

3. Saves Water

Looking for a way to save money on your water bill each month? The search is over thanks to a bathroom renovation! Believe it or not, bathroom fixtures from years ago weren’t designed to preserve water. From toilets to sinks, these important bathroom appliances use more H2O than necessary to get the job done. Whether you’re looking to save water or have an eco-friendly bathroom, renovation is the answer! Certainly, one of the best solutions to saving water is to upgrade your toilet completely. Sure, you might feel a sentimental attachment to your current “throne,” but it could be using much more water than what’s needed, in addition to raising your water bill tremendously. If that’s the case, then there are an array of eco-friendly toilets on the market that use an appropriate amount of water for each flush — thanks to an “eco-flush” feature!

4. Prevents a Future Problem

Has your vanity sink seen better days? If that’s the case, then it could potentially lead to a more significant problem down the road if overlooked. If you’re looking for peace of mind in your home, then upgrading your vanity will be the solution. Not only will this bathroom staple be up to date, but a new vanity will create less of a chance of a potential leak or flood happening in your home. Additionally, by giving your fixtures a much-needed update, you’ll finally have the bathroom of your dreams — because sometimes your fixtures will be mismatched. Think about the reselling benefit: if your fixtures don’t look uniform, then it may scare away potential buyers, even though it’s typically a simple, inexpensive fix. Of course, if you plan on staying in your home for the years to come, then you may grow weary of the mismatched fixtures — which, of course, a beautiful renovation will solve.

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing Share a Helpful Bathtub Guidebook

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In this Trusted Saskatoon plumbing Tip, Centennial Plumbing share a bathtub buying guidebook.

Your Bathtub Guidebook

If your bathtub needs an upgrade and you don't know where to begin, you are likely wondering what bathtub to choose and how to maintain it. This guide explores some of the top bathtub options so that you can move forward without stress. As you read this guide, you also discover some of the top ways you can clean and maintain your bathroom. You will have no trouble picking a path that makes sense for you. You will soon have a new bathtub that matches your personality and style, and you will be pleased with the outcome.

Having the right bathtub enhances the look and value of your home in ways you might not have expected. Turn your bathroom into the perfect place to relax and unwind, or turn it into an upscale environment that grabs and keeps your attention. Once you know what bathtub is right for you, you will know you are on the right path. Give it some thought to ensure you make the right choice for your short and long-term needs.

Choosing the Right Bathtub

Choosing the right bathtub is a vital part of the process. You want a bathtub that fits the style and design of your home. Look online at sample designs if you would like to get the best possible results. You want to give your bathroom a look of which you can be proud, so explore your design options.

If you have a small bathroom, an alcove bathtub could be the right choice for you and your family. An alcove bathtub sits in the corner of three walls. You have one finished side you use to enter and exit your bathtub, so this design works for smaller footprints.

Freestanding bathtubs are another option you might consider. A freestanding bathtub will become the focal point of your space. You need a large bathroom for this design to make sense. If you don’t have the space for a freestanding tub, a drop-in bathtub is a viable solution; yet, it will still pack a great design punch. With a drop-in design, your bathtub is level with the floor. This type of tub works well with modern designs. If you use a drop-in bathtub and have children, use a gate to make sure they don't fall into it.

Bathtub Cleaning and Maintenance

It's time to explore some of the top ways you can clean and maintain your bathtub. In most cases, use a gentle cleaning solution to wipe down your bathtub. In more extreme cases, you have to use a strong stain remover to get your bathtub looking new again. A leaky faucet is one of the most common bathtub problems.

In addition to having a leaky faucet, your drains can also leak. A leaky drain leads to pooling water near your bathtub, which might lead to mold and other problems you want to avoid.

Grout issues are another common problem to look out for. Grout that comes apart allows water to enter and get under your tiles. Water under your tiles spreads and can pose serious threats to the integrity of your structure. Make sure your bathroom is properly sealed to avoid compromising malfunctions.

If you are looking for a new bathtub, Centennial Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Electric is here to help. You can turn to a team of experienced experts who have your needs in mind from start to finish. The team at Centennial Plumbing will install your new bathtub while paying attention to each detail.

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing Share How to Save on Your Water Bill

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In this Trusted Saskatoon plumbing Tip, Centennial Plumbing share common ways you might be wasting water along with some money-saving solutions.

Did You Spend Too Much on Your Water Bill? Keep Reading...

No one can live without water, but many of us could do without high water bills. If you find that your water usage has mysteriously crept higher each billing period, you might want to check out your habits and see if there's any room for improvement. Many of us waste water without even realizing it; having access to cool, clean water every day makes running it become second nature, and if we're not as conscious of how much water we use, even everyday acts can cause our bills to skyrocket. Explore these common ways you might be wasting water along with some money-saving solutions.

Showering Too Much for Too Long

Whether you like to kick your morning off with a hot shower or relax in one after a long day at work, you could be wasting litres upon litres of water. An eight-minute shower consumes approximately 64.35 litres of water, which means a half-hour or a full 60 minutes could charge you far more than you care to spend. Showering too frequently can also damage your skin, too. Experts recommend you thoroughly bathe once or twice a week. Eliminating daily showers will help you save money, improve your skin, strengthen your hair and increase your body's natural layer of good bacteria.

Half-Loaded Laundry Machines

Filling your washer halfway still uses a full load's worth of water. In fact, washing your clothes less frequently, and in greater amounts, will ensure that you conserve more water and money. In order to cut back and save, you might want to upgrade to ENERGY STAR washers and dryers; these appliances use less energy and water than their regular competitors. Additionally, washing on cold when possible will also help lower utility bills so that you can save two-in-one.

Washing Dishes With the Water Running

It's common in some households to wash dishes under a stream of hot water, but in others, the norm is to fill the sink or a small basin with soapy water beforehand. This may seem gross, but it's actually an effective way to save you time. Instead of scrubbing incessantly, let dishes soak in the suds for several minutes, then just rinse them off! It would help if you also washed by hand when possible; dishwashers are a modern luxury, but they're too costly. A single cycle typically consumes 22.71 litres of water, while an ENERGY STAR appliance uses 15.14 litres. This may seem practical enough, but if you're running the dishwasher every day when it's not even full, you're wasting precious water for no reason.

Flushing Things You Shouldn’t

We all know children are prone to flushing foreign objects down the toilet, but plenty of adults use their toilet as a disposal as well. Toilets use the most water in your home; one flush uses approximately 18.93 litres to 26.50 litres of water. If you use your toilet as a stand-in trash can for feminine hygiene products or other waste material, you use unnecessary water and risk clogging your pipes. Blockages can cause leaks, which may eventually lead to bursts if they aren't repaired.

Hidden Leaks

It's possible that your plumbing could be secretly leaking water without you even knowing — and this happens more frequently than you think. In order to check for a leak in your home, look for any puddles or droplets around the base of your toilet, faucets and pipe fittings. An excellent way to test for a leaky toilet is to place a drop of food dye in the bowl and wait 10 minutes. If any colouring is visible in 10 minutes, you have a leak. Be sure to flush after this test, though, so you can avoid staining.

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing Share Common Ways Homeowners Ruin Their Plumbing

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In this Trusted Saskatoon plumbing Tip, Centennial Plumbing share common ways homeowners are destroying their plumbing.

Common Ways Homeowners are Destroying Their Plumbing

No one could live without proper plumbing, but many homeowners often cause serious damage to their pipes without any idea what they're doing. Using our household staples like the toilet and shower is self-explanatory, but there are many subtle actions you'd think twice about that can wreak serious havoc on your plumbing. You don't have to be a pro to know the basics about how to protect your pipes. Exploring the most common problems and bad plumbing habits will help you prevent issues in the future.

The Biggest Mistakes You Can Make With Your Plumbing

Not Adding Freeze Protection

Although our homes are usually heated thoroughly throughout the winter, our pipes need some extra care to prevent serious damage. You may be none the wiser when it comes to exposed outdoor pipes, but when they freeze over, you can face thousands of dollars in damages and repairs. Pipe insulation is an affordable way to prevent freezing, leaks and bursts. You can buy pipe insulation kits and put them on yourself for relatively cheap. You can even use a refashioned pool noodle in a pinch.

Going the DIY Route

No one wants to spend money on repairs, but professional plumbers have their job for a reason. If you try to install or repair plumbing on your own, you're likely to cause unintentional damage without adequate experience under your belt. Plumbing is never a simple piece. Everything is interconnected, and a simple mishap can create a host of problems throughout an entire plumbing system. You should only tackle problems you're 100 percent certain you can do properly. Online video tutorials are great, but they can't replace the years of experience and knowledge that a professional plumber brings to the table.

Ignoring Warning Signs

Sinks that don't drain, toilets that struggle to flush and changes in water pressure and temperature indicate a deeper issue. Temporary fixes like over-the-counter drain cleaners can erode pipes and aren't able to truly remove debris and blockages. If you notice a sudden plunge in water pressure or your faucets take longer to heat up than they used to, it's likely that there's a deeper blockage somewhere in the pipes. Problems may persist for months or even years, but eventually, leaks and breaks are bound to occur. Owners who let problems side or figure it's "just the house getting old" wind up facing hundreds of dollars in expensive repairs or overhauls when a minor service call would have been able to resolve the issue.

Not Knowing What Types of Pipes You Have

Different pipes have different lifespans, and each kind requires special care. Copper and PVC are the most common types of plumbing found in Canadian homes today with a lifespan between 50 to 70 years. In recent years, new constructions feature Pex plumbing, which is less susceptible to breaks, leaks and corrosion than metal pipes. Knowing what type of plumbing is in your home makes it easier to purchase the right products and reduces the risk of accidental damage. The year your home was built may provide some insight into its plumbing, but the best way to find out is to take a look or have a professional come by and provide a definitive answer.

Causing Clogs

Too much toilet paper and feminine hygiene products can get lodged in your plumbing and lead to difficulty flushing later. Too much build-up in your pipes will cause them to rupture, which is something no one wants to happen. Loading your garbage disposal with non-compatible foods or kitchen waste or rinsing hair down the bathroom sink can create some serious blockages over time. Most of the debris that gets caught in pipes clings to the sides, hardening as cold water rushes over it. The use of chemical drain cleaners usually only exacerbates the problem by weakening your pipe's interior and making it more susceptible to leaks.

Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers at Centennial Plumbing Tip About When to Replace Your Toilet

Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical are Trusted Saskatoon Plumbers that have been one of Saskatoon's most recommended plumbing companies for over 50 years. In this Trusted Saskatoon plumbing Tip, Centennial Plumbing share when it might be time to replace a toilet.

When Should I Replace My Toilet?

Uh, oh: it seems that your toilet is about to give its very last flush. Although that may be the case for some “thrones” in some homes, there is a slight chance that you may need to replace your toilet completely. Not sure what to look (or listen) for?

Four of the most common signs that it’s time to replace a toilet include if the toilet makes strange hissing noises, if it is always running, if it continually clogs, or if the toilet won’t flush at all. You can also watch for leaks, cracks and other irreparable damage that indicate you need to replace your toilet.

Take a glance at these helpful tips to see if you’ll need a “throne” upgrade soon.

1. Your Toilet Makes Strange Sounds

One of the first and most visible (actually, audible) signs of needing a replacement toilet is that your current “throne” is making an array of strange sounds - noises that sound quite peculiar coming from a toilet. The first and most “startling” sound will be a hissing sound, followed by a possible trickling sound, too. The noise will be noticeable every time you enter your bathroom or flush your toilet. However, it is quite common for your toilet to make some sounds from time-to-time but, but if it’s making strange noises frequently, it’s time to shop for a new “throne”.

2. Your Toilet Is Always Running

If the water (inside) your toilet continuously runs and won't shut off, it needs to be replaced. Granted, when you flush, normally the water will run and shut off by itself — but if the water continues to cascade like a waterfall, then you’ll want to start looking into a new toilet. When looking to see if your toilet is running more frequently than usual, you’ll want to flush once and let it do its “magic.” Once the typical automatic flushing process continues, you’ll notice the difference when the bowl continuously enables the water to flow more than usual. If the running continues to be more frequent, then you should be scouting out a new toilet.

3. Your Toilet Continually Clogs

While it’s normal for a toilet to get clogged here and there, regular clogs are a sign of something more! Unlike newly manufactured toilets, older “thrones” will start to give out over time, causing them to lose the strength they once had. When this happens, simple functions that your toilet once did with ease, are now quite an obstacle and could be a potential danger to your home (hello, possible flooding).

The minute you notice that “old reliable” isn’t working the way it once did, please contact Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical right away to schedule your appointment with one of our certified plumbers, who will diagnose and replace your toilet, if needed! This will not only put your mind at ease, knowing that you have a new toilet, but it will also prevent any further problems from forming with your plumbing!

4. Your Toilet Won't Flush

One of the most obvious signs of your toilet needing to be replaced is when it stops flushing. Believe it or not, as your toilet begins to age, the bowl itself will eventually provide weaker flushes after each use. If this problem is not resolved when you first notice it, then it will lead to the possibility of your toilet not flushing at all. This, of course, is not good and can be resolved once your toilet is replaced. However, there is always a slight possibility that you may need to replace your toilet handle — which is a pretty simple solution but would be best if your local certified plumber takes care of the job. If you’re not sure if the handle itself is broken, merely attempt to give your toilet a flush. If the handle is unusually loose, then it may need to be replaced — but, if the handle seems to be intact and it’s still not flushing, then you will need to have your toilet replaced.
