Gibbon Heating and Air your Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning and Furnace experts share a tip on Return Air

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years, Gibbon is a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning requirements!

Here they share a tip on Return Air:

In many homes return air struggles to find its way back to the furnace. This results in improper pressure balances from room-to-room and often leads to uneven room temperatures. Lack of return air causes comfort complaints, higher energy costs, and can even cause moisture problems throughout a home.

While most HVAC contractors install ducts and registers to deliver air to every room in a house, they often neglect to provide adequate return air back to the furnace. In most homes, there is usually only one return air grille in the common hallway that is attempting to serve the entire house. This means that all of the stale cold air in your home has to be pulled through that single grille before it can be heated by the furnace.

Here’s what happens when there isn’t enough return air in a home:

If the bedroom doors are closed, each bedroom becomes pressurized, forcing air into the bedroom walls and ceiling. In the winter, this humid air can contact cold surfaces and lead to condensation and mold.

Also, the main return air grille is starving for air. This then causes the hallway and living room to be depressurized as air is pulled from the attic, cracks in the walls, back into the hallway.

In the winter, the air that is pulled from the attic is cold and this increases the heating load. Conversely, during the summer, the air that is sucked indoors is hot and humid; this increases both the sensible and latent load on the air conditioner and increases power consumption.

There are three possible ways to solve the pressurized-bedroom problem. Each bedroom needs either:

A return air grille ducted back to the furnace;

A through-the-wall transfer grille connecting the bedroom to the hallway;

A crossover duct connecting a ceiling grille in the bedroom with a ceiling grille in the hallway.

The best option is of course the more expensive one: install a return grille/duct into every conditioned room of the house. Through-the-wall transfer grilles are a cheaper solution, but they have a major drawback: noise transmission. People in the hallway can often hear what goes on in the bedroom if a through-the-wall option is used.

A third option is a crossover duct. In this approach, a ceiling grille is placed in each bedroom and then connected to a grille in the hall. While a crossover duct will transmit sound, it will not be as noticeable as a through-the-wall return air.

Before considering a crossover duct, it should be noted that there are some disadvantages to this approach. A great deal of heat loss can occur in an attic space and it would be necessary in northern climates to insulate the duct work and this approach is not recommended in the Northern hemispheres.

Wondering which option best suits your needs? Call a professional and certified contractor who can go over the options with you.

Epic Auto & Driveline Trusted Saskatoon Tire and Auto Repair expert tip on Re-Torquing Tires

Epic Auto and Driveline is a one-stop Saskatoon automotive and tire shop for domestic and import cars, light trucks, and SUVs

You can be confident knowing that they always take pride in their work and take good care of their customers. Epic Automotive and Driveline is  a Trusted Saskatoon Tire Shop. In this tire tip they share why you should re-torque your tires!

Re-Torque Your Tires

Occasionally a customer will come into our auto repair shop with a concern of a noise; once in a while we find loose lug nuts that hold the tires and rims tight to the car. This usually happens shortly after they have had the vehicle in for servicing somewhere and the wheels were off or they have taken the wheel off themselves.

Re-torquing wheels after vehicle servicing

When you bring your vehicle to a Trusted Saskatoon repair shop, if we have had your wheels off of the vehicle, we will ask you to return so we can re-torque the wheels. Your invoice will also have a statement on it advising that the wheels need to be re-torqued. You can do this yourself if you like, but if we were the ones to work on the car we do this at no charge to you. We always use a torque wrench to tighten your wheels when we re-install them. This is more of a safety concern now than it was 20 years ago. Vehicles are much more reliable today, but they are made with lighter materials and some of these are very fussy about how they are put together. Even a slight decrease or increase in the tightness of bolts and nuts can have adverse effects, in that they can loosen or they can break.

Most automotive shops will use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel and this is the best way to make sure the nuts are tight but not so tight that the wheel studs break from too much pressure on them. Some vehicles are more prone to having the lug nuts loosen and will need multiple re-torquing to make sure they stay tight.

Loose wheels don’t happen often, but to be safe, have your wheels re-torqued within the first 100 KM after they have been put on. It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner/driver that this is done. Loose wheels can cause a lot of damage to your car and potential injury to you and others. It doesn't take long to re-torque wheels and could save you a repair bill and a big headache.

Epic also offers financing. If you need vehicle parts or car service but don't have the immediate funds to pay for it, take advantage of a monthly payment plan using the value of your vehicle through their financing partner.

Preferred Collision and Glass shares a tip on What to do when you are in a Collision:

When experiencing a collision, sometimes life can become very stressful and overwhelming when you are least expecting it to.

Sometimes they can occur when driving conditions are poor, such as when the roads are icy when there is black ice present, and when there is a snowstorm, or when it is very windy.

When traffic collisions seem to happen so quickly, it can be hard to recall the details later.

The most important thing to do in the case of a traffic collision is to remain calm, although sometimes this is a task that is easier said than done. If someone is hurt, if you think any other driver may be guilty of a Criminal Code offence, such as drunk driving, or if there is significant property damage, you must always call the police.

In the case of an accident, if no one is hurt please try to move your car to the side of the road where it will not obstruct traffic. If your car is not mobile, turn on your hazard lights or use cones, flares, or warning triangles.

When the collision occurs, write down as much information as you can about the accident so that you don’t forget it when you are asked to repeat it later. When filing a claim with your local SGI insurance outlet, you will be asked at that time to recall details about the incident. While speaking with the other driver or drivers, if one or more was involved, write down their contact information, such as name, phone number, and address, as well as their insurance broker if applicable, and if there were any witnesses, write down their information as well. If you can, you may sketch the accident, noting the position and directions of the cars, or use a disposable camera if you have one.

Though it can be difficult and stressful to be in a car accident, remember that these accidents can and do happen to anyone. Always be vigilant and watchful of unsafe road conditions, and do not drive if you feel uncomfortable doing so.If you are involved in a collision, please call SGI. Once SGI has done all the preliminary paperwork,we can help you with all your collision repairs and needs. Please call us or simply bring your car down to the shop at 659 51st St E and we’ll handle the concerns of your vehicle. We can’t prevent an accident, but we can make your vehicle look like one never happened.
