Sanctum Care Group Joins Trusted Saskatoon's Non-Profit Category

The Trusted Saskatoon team ran a social media contest in 2018 to decide upon a new category; the majority asked for it to be  Trusted Saskatoon NON-PROFITS. This was a good fit, as we have always had a strong community focus. Trusted was proud to be recognized as the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX Award for Community recipient in 2017.

We are thrilled to announce that Sanctum Care Group is our newest Saskatoon non-profit partner. In this article, we will share WHO they are, what they do and why Trusted wanted to get more involved in helping Sanctum achieve their lofty goals! After reading this, we hope you will join us in helping them!

Trusted Saskatoon welcomes Sanctum Care Group, the latest addition to our Trusted Saskatoon Non-Profit Category. This revolutionary non-profit organization is making waves with its innovative HIV care model, drawing attention from across Saskatchewan and beyond. In this blog post, we'll delve into the inspiring story of Sanctum Care Group, its founders, and their impactful work to provide holistic care to individuals with or at risk of HIV.

Katelyn & Morris

The story begins with Katelyn Roberts and Dr. Morris Markentin, two relentless individuals who defied skeptics to establish Saskatchewan's first HIV hospice. Katelyn, a former HIV case manager, pitched the idea to Dr. Markentin years ago over a meal at their favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Saskatoon. Their vision was to shift the focus from reactive to proactive care, providing preventative, holistic, and trauma-informed support before problems escalated.

Dr. Markentin, with years of experience in addiction medicine, recognized the interconnected issues of poverty, inadequate housing, and trauma as the root causes of his patients' challenges. Sanctum Care Group found its home in an empty building on Avenue O, a space provided by the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation. The initial days were challenging, with only two residents –a patient affectionately known as the "Lone Ranger" and Katelyn Roberts herself.  When the second patient moved in, the Lone Ranger stretched out a hand and said, “Welcome to heaven.” Soon, the 10-bed facility was battling a six-month waiting list. For many, it was the first time in their lives that many of the residents had a safe, stable place to call home.

The Impact of Sanctum Care Group

Today, Sanctum Care Group provides solace for individuals with HIV, supports mothers in keeping custody of and reuniting with their children, and offers a peaceful environment for palliative patients. Dr. Markentin emphasizes that, at Sanctum, no one has to face death alone. The organization has extended its reach through various initiatives, connecting former residents to housing and Sanctum 1.5, a neonatal care home for pregnant women, those with HIV or those at risk of contracting it.

Acknowledging that the journey was far from perfect, Dr. Markentin believes that Sanctum Care Group has made a significant impact already, and they have so much more to give! The organization's signature fundraiser, the annual Sanctum Survivor, involves community leaders spending 36 hours on the streets, simulating the challenges faced by those with chronic diseases and no housing. This event raises funds and fosters a deeper understanding of the struggles in Saskatoon's core neighbourhoods.

In 2023, the founder of Trusted Sara Wheelwright stepped up to participate as one of the ten survivors in the Sanctum Survivor event. Together, they raised a staggering $426,000, with Sara individually contributing an impressive $26,700. The huge final total was greatly impacted by the efforts of 2023 survivor participant David Dube, who surpassed his personal  $100,000 fundraising goal and announced at the Sanctum Gala that his total would be matched by the Les & Irene Dubé Foundation.

Reflecting on her experience, Sara said:

"The Sanctum Survivor experience was extremely humbling; I had no idea how many barriers our cities' most vulnerable citizens face in their daily lives. When I understood how impactful Sanctum is , I was determined to help them going forward - the work they do is so needed and I hope I can help them as they grow and share their model for the benefit of all involved! "

This is a glimpse of their experience.

Sanctum Care Group's journey is a testament to the power of determination, compassion, and a vision for proactive care. As they continue to expand and share their proven programs, Sanctum Care Group is making a lasting impact on the lives of individuals with HIV and their families. Trusted Saskatoon is excited to have them in our Non-Profit Category, and we look forward to amplifying and supporting their transformative work for the community.

Trusted Saskatoon Auto Repair & Service Shop Epic Auto and Driveline Discuss All Weather Tires vs Winter Tires

Epic Auto and Driveline is a one-stop Saskatoon automotive and tire shop for domestic and import cars, light trucks, and SUVs. You can be confident knowing that they always take pride in their work and take good care of their customers. Epic Automotive and Driveline is a Trusted Saskatoon Auto Repair and Service Shop. In this tip, they discuss all-weather tires vs winter tires.

All Weather Tires vs Winter Tires

In Saskatchewan, where winter conditions can be severe, it is important to have tires that can provide optimal traction and handling on icy and snowy roads. While all-weather tires are designed to perform well in a variety of weather conditions, including winter, they may not offer the same level of performance as dedicated winter tires.

Winter tires, also known as snow tires, are specifically designed to excel in cold temperatures, icy roads, and snowy conditions. They have unique tread patterns and rubber compounds that remain flexible in low temperatures, providing better grip and traction. The deep grooves and sipes in winter tires help channel snow and slush away from the tire's contact patch, enhancing traction on slippery surfaces.

All-weather tires, on the other hand, are designed to be a compromise between all-season and winter tires. They offer better traction than all-season tires in winter conditions, but they are not as specialized as dedicated winter tires. All-weather tires have a tread pattern and rubber compound that perform well in a wide range of weather conditions, including light snow and ice. However, they may not provide the same level of grip and handling as winter tires in more severe winter conditions.

Living in Saskatchewan we frequently drive in snowy and icy conditions, so we highly recommend using winter tires during the winter months. They are specifically designed to provide the best traction and safety in harsh winter weather. Winter tires can greatly improve your vehicle's performance and handling on snow-covered roads, reducing the risk of accidents.

Ultimately, the choice between all-weather tires and winter tires depends on your specific driving needs and the severity of winter conditions in your area. If you frequently encounter heavy snowfall and icy roads, investing in a set of dedicated winter tires is the best option to ensure optimal safety and performance during the winter season.

Epic also offers financing. If you need vehicle parts or car service but don't have the immediate funds to pay for it, take advantage of a monthly payment plan using the value of your vehicle through their financing partner.

Introducing Sirius Health Thai Massage Clinic and School - Your Trusted Saskatoon Thai Massage Experts

The Trusted Saskatoon Team and community is delighted to extend a warm welcome to Sirius Health Thai Massage Clinic, the latest addition to the Saskatoon Health and Wellness Category.

Sirius Health Thai Massage

Sirius Health Thai Massage Clinic and the Sirius Health Thai Massage School are led by founder Grant Martens and his dedicated team, and their mission is to...

"Promote health and peace through excellence in education, compassion in action, and the deep-rooted connection to Thailand and the lineage of Thai bodywork."

Each member of their team is rigorously trained and holds certifications with the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada. Grant holds further accreditation as both an Advanced Registered Thai Therapist and a Registered Instructor with the Thai Healing Alliance International

Meet Grant Martens

In July 2016, Grant's transformative journey began with his first Thai massage experience in Budapest, Hungary. Struggling with chronic pain due to the demands of a desk job and the physical toll of a farming lifestyle, he found unparalleled relief in just one session of Thai massage, an outcome that had eluded him despite numerous visits to Registered Massage Therapists (RMT). The profound impact of this single massage sparked Grant's curiosity and eventually evolved into a passionate endeavour. Inspired to introduce Thai massage to a broader audience in Canada, he meticulously crafted a business plan.

In January 2017, Grant made the courageous decision to transition from his prior career and fully commit to the world of Thai massage. Since then, he has undertaken extensive training, accumulating over 800 hours of education at renowned schools in Thailand. Grant's dedication and expertise have not only made him one of just eleven Registered Instructors in Canada for Thai massage but also a pivotal figure in expanding the practice of Thai massage. Notably, his involvement in establishing the Thai Massage School, situated conveniently across the courtyard from the clinic, exemplifies his unwavering commitment to fostering the growth of Thai massage in our city, province, and country.

Trusted Angie Shares Her Experience At Sirius Health Thai Massage Clinic

“ Upon entering Sirius Thai Massage Clinic for my first Thai massage experience, I was welcomed by Grant. I was struck by his professionalism, the clinic's immaculate setting, and an overwhelming sense of security and tranquillity. Grant's dedication to delivering an authentic Thai massage experience rooted in tradition is evident. What sets this practice apart is its unique approach, distinct from massages provided by RMTs, as it integrates fascia work, muscle interstice manipulation, assisted stretching, and energy work, yielding remarkably effective results. The experience begins with a soothing foot washing and concludes with a refreshing cup of tea. I will be back!”

Testimonials from Their Clients

The clients of Sirius Thai Massage Clinic consistently sing its praises, highlighting the positive impact on their overall well-being and their encounters with Grant. When we were checking references and speaking to their clients as part of the Trusted verification process, this is what a few of their clients shared...

"Grant is exceptional at what he does.  He talks you through the process so that you know what to expect.  I  fully believe that he know exactly what he is doing based on his experience and that he continues to get more training to get better at his trade all the time.." - Dawn Reid

He sits with you after for tea that has allowed us to build a rapport. He is gentle in delivery and because I have been a client for awhile and the care attention he takes in knowing me personally and my body, he knows what I can handle.  Grant is very professional.  A 10/10 for this business!” - Barb McCaslin
If you seek a holistic healing practice that focuses on energy-based therapy, incorporating techniques such as stretching, compression, and acupressure in Saskatoon, Sirius Health Thai Massage Clinic is your destination. Your well-being will noticeably improve after your visit, with the benefits continuing to unfold in the following days.

We received 100's of nominations, from children's activities to fencing. However, there was a clear winner; with over 200 nominations, we were thrilled that the new category was Trusted Saskatoon NON-PROFITS!

This was such a good fit, as we have always had a strong community focus; in fact, Trusted was proud to be recognized as the recipient of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX Award for Community in 2017.

In the fall of 2023, we felt it was time to extend the love, and we said farewell and good luck to two of the Saskatoon Non-profits we had supported and promoted for 5 years as Trusted Partners, Saskatoon Kinette's and SCAT- Street Cat Rescue. We are thrilled to announce that The Kinsmen Foundation - TeleMiracle is our newest non-profit partner.

We are grateful to have a wonderful relationship with the folks at The Kinsmen Foundation here in Saskatoon. Our sister company, Trusted Marketing Services has been working with The Foundation for the last 10 months, helping them with social media and other marketing pieces, and a past Trusted Saskatoon team member, Carman Praski, is the Fund Development Manager. Carman  introduced us to the organization in 2022, and we are in awe at all they do for this province! We look forward to helping them reach even more people through our networks and assisting them in raising as much money as possible through the 2024 TeleMiracle Telethon, which takes place in Regina February 24th and 25th

"Ring Those Phones"

The TeleMiracle Legacy

The history of TeleMiracle stretches back to 1977, when it was first introduced as an annual telethon organized by the Kinsmen and Kinettes of Saskatchewan. Over the years, it has become a cherished Saskatchewan tradition, as much a part of the province's cultural fabric as wheat fields and prairie sunsets.

Every year, TeleMiracle unites people across Saskatchewan with a shared purpose: to raise funds to support individuals with medical expenses, special needs, and mobility challenges. The telethon is more than just a fundraiser; it is a symbol of hope, unity, and the indomitable spirit of the people of Saskatchewan.

The Impact of TeleMiracle

TeleMiracle's impact on Saskatchewan cannot be overstated. The funds raised through this annual event go to support a wide range of programs and services, including medical equipment, travel assistance, and other vital resources for individuals facing life-altering challenges. See an example of their impact in the video below.

The Kinsmen Foundation, through TeleMiracle, has played a crucial role in transforming lives and providing much-needed assistance. Many families and individuals have found hope and relief through their initiatives. The positive impact of TeleMiracle extends not only to those directly assisted but also to the entire province. It reflects the compassion and generosity that define the Saskatchewan community.

A Team with Huge Hearts

At the heart of TeleMiracle's success is the remarkable team of dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to make it all happen. The Kinsmen Foundation's dedicated employees, who work tirelessly behind the scenes all year, the Kinsmen and Kinettes of Saskatchewan, along with countless volunteers, have shown unwavering commitment and enormous hearts in their efforts to organize the annual TeleMiracle telethon. “The Kinsmen Foundation is an amazing organization with a genuine mission to help Saskatchewan residents with miracles of mobility equipment and much needed financial support when they have nowhere else to turn. I’m so humbled and grateful to be able to give my time and talents to making our province a better place, one individual and one family at a time. TeleMiracle is truly rooted in Saskatchewan with such a long-standing tradition of success, and without our generous TeleMIracle donors, who are our true Miracle Makers, we couldn’t do what we do in Helping People Every Day. Thank you, Saskatchewan!” – Carman Praski, Fund Development Manager, Kinsmen Foundation

As we welcome the Kinsmen Foundation's TeleMiracle to Trusted Saskatoon as a Non-Profit , we embrace not only a tradition but a symbol of hope, unity, and the incredible spirit of Saskatchewan. TeleMiracle has touched countless lives, providing assistance, support, and a beacon of hope to those who need it most. We look forward to supporting their continued efforts and to standing alongside this incredible team. In an ever-changing world, it's comforting to know that the values of compassion, community, and a willingness to lend a helping hand remain unwavering in Saskatchewan, and TeleMiracle is a shining example of these qualities. Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: PickNic's Catering, a Trusted Saskatoon Caterer

PickNic's Catering & Fine Foods has been a trusted name in Saskatoon for culinary excellence for over 20 years. As we celebrate them reaching their 10-year milestone with Trusted Saskatoon, we take a journey through their inspiring story of passion, dedication, and community involvement.

PickNic's Catering traces its roots back to April 2003, when it started operating as PickNic's Bakery and Bistro. It wasn't long before their delectable offerings gained a dedicated following. In 2004, they moved to 22nd Street East and rebranded themselves as PickNic's Restaurant and Fine Pastries, where they continued to delight patrons with their sumptuous pastries and exquisite dishes for the next five years.

In 2009, PickNic's embarked on a new chapter as they moved to 33rd Street West. With this transition, they redirected their focus towards event catering and crafting wedding cakes that would leave a lasting impression. This change in direction marked the beginning of a new era for the establishment, one that would see them become a cherished fixture in Saskatoon's catering landscape.

Nicola Lawson

At the heart of PickNic's Catering is the passionate and talented owner Nicola Lawson. Nicola's journey to Saskatoon was marked by many globetrotting adventures, working at various establishments worldwide within the food industry. Her travels eventually brought her to Saskatoon, where she decided to put down roots and share her culinary expertise with the local community.

Nicola is not just a culinary expert; she's also deeply involved in the community professionally and personally. Her engagement with numerous organizations and smaller community groups reflects her commitment to making a positive impact. As a mother of two girls, Nicola is equally passionate about shaping a bright future for them, emphasizing exposure to travel, language, diverse extracurricular activities, and multicultural events.

Krista Fehr

More recently, the dynamic Krista Fehr joined the PickNic's team. With over 25 years of experience in the foodservice industry and a Red Seal journeyperson cook, Krista brought some fresh energy to this culinary catering dream team alongside Nicola. Together, they've brought creativity and innovation to the business, enhancing its reputation for excellence.

What PickNic's Clients Say...

" It was absolutely fantastic to work with PickNic's. They've got an excellent system in place on the website, and even went above and beyond by taking the time to consult with me one on one. In the end the selections suggested were perfect for our gathering and the quality of food was superb. I highly recommend PickNic's... they're masters of food and customer service." - Warren Todosichuk
" PickNic'scatered our wedding, and OH MY GOD, IT WAS SOOO GOOD. Every single one of our guests raved about how good it was! Some even said it was better than their own wedding/weddings they had attended recently! Nicola and Krista and the gang made it super easy for us! From the dish rental to the bartending to the meal to the cake to the donuts, everything was absolutely perfect! And they made it so easy for our guests with allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions to navigate the buffet! The service was amazing from beginning to end. Worth every single penny! My only regret is that I didn't eat more (adrenaline and excitement made for a not super hungry tummy) or get any pictures of our meal, but that is, entirely, my own mistake. Thank you again! It was the happiest day and it was in part because of you and your team!" ❤️Krystina Micucci

Nicola & Krista Share What It Means To Be a Trusted Saskatoon Partner

"We are so proud to be an integral part of an amazing group of business owners that are as dedicated to quality, honesty and positive client experiences as PickNic’s Catering. "

A word from Sara, the Trusted Saskatoon founder, about her personal experience with PickNic's

"To be in business for 20 years with the ups and downs of the economy is hard enough, to have to then deal with Covid, which hit the hospitality and food industry particularly hard… and to have survived intact is a testament to Nicola, Krista and the PickNic’s team. A huge part of why they have been so successful comes from their passion, quality, service and commitment to striving to be the best caterer in Saskatoon. PickNic’s has catered many of my special events - personally and for Trusted over the last ten years. From smaller client and team meetings to significant milestone events, including my 40th birthday, where she knocked it out of the park with a British-themed menu that was the talk of the party! I have never been disappointed with the choices, food quality or fantastic personal service.” - Sara Wheelwright

PickNic's Catering is more than just a business; it's a respected household name in Saskatoon. Over the years, their commitment to quality, creativity, and community engagement has made them an integral part of the city's fabric.

In celebrating PickNic's Catering's 10-year milestone, we acknowledge their remarkable culinary achievements and their positive impact on Saskatoon and the communities they've touched.
