With the holidays coming, maybe you are in need of a new mattress for company? Before buying that spare room mattress, ask yourself this. If your mattress is 7 or more years old, or simply not as comfortable as it used to be, maybe make your mattress the spare room one and get a new one for yourself. It might cost a few dollars more now, but in the long run saves you money as you only have to by one mattress and not two. A good quality mattress, by Sleep Council Canada standards, should last on average 8-10 years. So if your mattress is 7 years old or older, you will likely be replacing it in a few years. Top mattress myths:

1. Firmer is better

The truth is that the best mattress for your back is the one that feels best to you. A mattress provides both pressure relief (the top portion of the mattress provides this) and back support (the bottom part of the mattress provides this) and the best combination of that feeling is what you are looking for in a mattress. The best bed is the one that’s most comfortable to you.

2.High Coil count is critical

The truth is that there is way more to it than that. Type, gauge, tempering, etc are FAR, FAR more critical and important. High coil counts absolutely does not mean a better bed. people who talk nothing but coil counts know nothing about mattresses.

3. Silk, cashmere, and wool make a bed more comfortable

The small amounts usually used in the upper padding only make a bed more expensive. When you cover your mattress with a pad and sheets, you can’t directly feel the surface anyway.

4. Stores sell the same mattress under different names

Retailers often claim that their mattress A is comparable to a competitor’s mattress B. Though you may find beds that are truly alike, most “comparables” had little in common.They may look exactly the same on the outside, but will have different foaming, foam amount, and/or different grades of foam. Unless it's the same manufacture, and the bed has the same name at both locations, there will be a difference

5. I save a lot of money when mattresses are 50% off

Ever wonder how some stores can always be having a half price sale all the time? It's because their "regular retail price" is sky high. Then it's "half off" to give you the illusion of saving big. Companies advertise like this because it works. I had a mattress I retailed for $899 taxes included, I had a competitors full page ad for the same mattress saying they were selling it for 70% off. Their retail price was $3200. Same bed!!!

6. The higher the price of the mattress you buy, the better quality sleep you will get.

Look at reason 4 to see why this is false. However, price differences can also reflect the expense of the foam from bed to bed. Higher grades and densities simply cost more. However expensive foam doesn't mean more comfort. Again, you purchase what you find comfortable, not what is more expensive.

7. Salespeople are always objective

In a perfect world maybe, but manufacturers dangle financial incentives known as SPIFs (for “sales person incentive funds”) to push various brands and models. Again, nobody knows whats best for you other than you.

If nothing else remember these simple rules... The only thing that matters in a mattress is comfort, comfort, comfort and durability.

A good quality mattress should last you on average 8-10 years.( a bed warranty IS NOT an indication of how long a bed will last!)

Here's a couple of tips to increase the chances of hitting that ten year mark.

• You should rotate the mattress head to toe ONCE A WEEK for the first two months from time of delivery. This will help the foam break in more quickly and more evenly. Then after that, 4-6 times a year is the average. If you are a very heavy person or have a very soft bed, it could be even more.
• How do you know when to rotate that bed? When you are changing the sheets and see body impressions (which is normal), this is a good indication it's time to rotate the mattress. The impressions should disappear in a night or two. Proper rotation will add years to the life of the mattress.
• And of course, always use a good quality mattress pad/cover. Any type of stain voids your warranty, so a mattress pad/cover will help protect your investment. Using a mattress pad is soooooo much more healthy for you than not having one. All that sweat, dust mites, dead skin cells, etc, will be in the matt pad (which can be taken off and washed) and not in your mattress. Skin cells, dirt, sweat, etc, will break the foam down faster, so the more you keep out of the mattress, the better.

If by chance the mattress does become stained or dirty, They can be saved. Many rug/upholstery cleaning companies also can clean that mattress. Just be careful that they use little, if any, liquids in the cleaning process. Liquids can damage the foams in the mattress.

Well summer is here and my thoughts turn to the lake...how about yours?

Whether you have a cabin, trailer or RV, your time there is never long enough. So you definitely want to sleep well to enjoy every minute of it. Let’s face it; if you have ever owned a trailer or RV, you know the mattress is not, shall we say, good. When people come into my store to replace these mattresses and say they "want something cheap, it's "just for the lake", I tell them that you don't need to spend a lot of money for replacements, but you still want to be comfortable. You go to the lake to ENJOY yourself, and if you are not getting a good night’s sleep, you’re robbing yourself of some of that enjoyment. Think about it, would your day be more enjoyable if you weren't waking up sore, stiff or tired every morning? When people ask me about cabin beds, the first thing I ask them is how old is their beds at home. The reason for this is a good quality bed should last you on average about 8-10 years. If your beds are getting close to this, you might want to take your beds at home to the lake and buy new ones for your home. This might cost more now, but in the long run will save you money as you don't have to buy cabin beds now, and new beds for home in a couple of years. Your bed from home will have years and years of extra life as now you only are using it a few months a year at the lake. Get out and enjoy the summer.

A hide a bed gains you only one thing, an extra bed in the house. Not even a comfortable one most often, just an extra raised sleep space. When people come in and ask for a hide a bed, I ask if they really, truly need the extra bed or not. When I ask the question, "how many times in the last 6 months would it have been used..." I usually get a blank stare and mumbled response of "maybe once?" Houses are larger, with more spare room options. We carry a fantastic line of wall beds that can serve this purpose of extra sleep space for the once or twice a year guest.

Hide a beds are often put into the most used room in the house, the TV room. It is important to have your BEST suspension under that sofa for years of comfortable seating, and so often people compromise that with a hide a bed frame, and a less than comfortable bed that is used once or twice a year. The new fangled blow up mattresses with built in frames that fold down small enough to fit in the linen closet would likely be a better option, and cheaper too. Inexpensive hide a beds are not comfortable to sit on and not comfortable to sleep on, so why do it if you don't need it? To get the good ones, there is a price tag associated with it, one that people often don't want to pay because "it is just in the basement". Consider your other options. Hidden beds are smart and savvy, and serve the purpose of a full size COMFORTABLE bed in single double and queen size, all up against a wall when not needed to allow space in the room for other things, like a workout room or home office. Everyone always asks me ' Mark..what's the best bed I sell?'  I always answer, "The one that works best for you."

When buying a bed, the person you are dealing with should be asking you questions to guide you towards something designed for your sleep needs. Every body is different and there are general rules to go by, but at the end of the day you should go with what you find comfortable. Here are two things to keep in mind when looking for a new mattress...

1: Always make sure you get a minimum 30 day sleep satisfaction with your purchase

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING ELSE BUT THE MATTRESS TO GET THAT. If you are told that you must purchase a mattress pad or protector to receive a sleep guarantee; then they don't care if you’re happy, they just want more money from you. I sell protectors and HIGHLY recommend them, but you should never have to buy one just for a warranty. Some places will even tell you that you would have no warranty on your bed unless you buy their mattress pad. THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE. You ALWAYS have a manufacturer’s warranty on a new product. I would never recommend purchasing extra or extended warranty for your mattress; the manufacture’s warranty and a good mattress protector are all you ever need. Paying for extra warranty is simply a way to separate you from your money.

2: Never fall for terms like pedic.., chiro.., back.., doctor.., posture... etc on mattresses or brands.

These terms are thrown around all the time to give you the illusion that they are "good" for your back. Every manufacture will use terms like this on mattresses which will have nothing to do with back support at all. Many manufactures have endorsements from institutions or organizations, or work in conjunction with institutions, which is great, but if this is their main selling point, well maybe that’s all they really have, just a paid endorsement. Some brands that I carry have endorsements, but I don't even mention it to my customers. Why? Because nothing should be influencing your decision except comfort. Nobody can tell you what’s right for you, except YOU.

Lets quickly explore the top 3 myths of why some clients will reject leather.

Myth #1 "Leather is hot and sticky!"

or "Leather is soo cold, especially for the basement!" Many people's experience of leather seating has been limited to the car. When the sun is beating down in a car, it can literally get hot enough to fry an egg on the dash, and of course the seats are going to be absolutely steaming. Same thing in winter...you never worry about hot buns, it is like sitting on an ice cube! Add to that, car makers are not using the highest grade leathers that breathe, and the backseat is almost always a vinyl. A good quality leather sofa set will actually breathe to some extent. If it is cool out, by the time you count to 6 seconds, it is warming to your body temperature, and is also going to disperse the heat. If it is hot out, with no air conditioning in the house and bare legs, you certainly can sweat and stick as soon as you sit down...but think of this. You are sweating whether you are sitting on leather or cloth. On leather, the sweat can be wiped off. On cloth, it sinks in, damages your foams, and is there the next time you place your face on the sofa to lay down. Enough said on that topic.

Myth #2 "We have pets and kids, leather is not in our future!"

 Cloth certainly can provide a great place for kids to roughhouse and mess around without worrying about scratches and damage in the same way as you would see on a leather set. Cloth also is definitely more budget friendly when there is a low limit set on what a client can spend. Of course, there are several downfalls to cloth. Pets can just as easily snag a cloth sofa with their nails as they can scratch a leather set. Once cloth is damaged or stained, it is all over with but the tears. Good quality leather is actually very hard to puncture. You may scratch it, you may scrape it, but it isn't easy to puncture, even with teeth involved. Different types of finishes on leather can lend more durability and have less noticeable scratching. Leather is wash and wear, and is a great choice for persons suffering with allergies, as dust settles on top and can be wiped off. Cloth retains dust and odors much easier. Many people think that they can just throw their cloth cushions in the wash, but it is important to really look at the care labels. Often you will void their warranty doing this, and I have had complaints of never getting the cushions to fit back on the foam properly due to shrinking. Lastly, repairs are lot easier on a leather set, often being barely perceived and maybe looking like a natural scar in the hide. Plus the area of the fix is actually stronger than the rest of the hide! Trying to sew up a hole in cloth is a futile venture, the hole often reappears as soon as there is stress on the fix. It takes a lot to truly damage a leather set. Small surface scratches are often only noticeable to the owner, the average visitor is not going to notice these things. Cloth does have the benefit of a softer feel, and it can add warmth and texture to the look of a room. There is maintenance required though, and high traffic, food eating areas may not be best suited for cloth. I get many clients who want to put cloth downstairs "for the kids", because of cost and no one really seeing it; yet this is the area they use the most in the house, watching movies, snacking with the kids and generally living on their set! Nothing can compare with the ease of care a quality leather set provides. Dog hair vacuums up in a jiffy, spills wipe off in a second.

Myth 3 "Leather is so expensive!"

Well, this is one that I can't really dispute. The only thing I can say is that good quality leather and a good quality cloth sofa are only going to be about 500.00 difference at International Furniture Wholesalers. If you are on a tight budget, I would much rather encourage my clients to look at a cloth set of decent quality with an easy to care for synthetic fabric than go with a very cheap bonded leather. Anything besides a good quality leather set is going to be disappointing as you lose all the great things about leather...the durability, the cleanability, and most of all, the breathability! The one thing I can say is...value. A cloth set wears out, a leather set just gets broke in. I find you get double to triple the amount of years out of a leather set compared to a cloth set. A leather set you can dress up and make look different just by different accents. A cloth set you may tire of and not be able to change the look up as easily, especially if you choose a pattern. A great compromise, and a very trendy look if you truly can't make up your mind is to have of bit of each. A cloth set can be dressed up with a beautiful leather accent chair, or a leather set can be finished off with a lively patterned accent chair and pillows.
