Gibbon Heating and Air your Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning and Furnace experts share a tip on Return Air

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years, Gibbon is a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning requirements!

Here they share a tip on Return Air:

In many homes return air struggles to find its way back to the furnace. This results in improper pressure balances from room-to-room and often leads to uneven room temperatures. Lack of return air causes comfort complaints, higher energy costs, and can even cause moisture problems throughout a home.

While most HVAC contractors install ducts and registers to deliver air to every room in a house, they often neglect to provide adequate return air back to the furnace. In most homes, there is usually only one return air grille in the common hallway that is attempting to serve the entire house. This means that all of the stale cold air in your home has to be pulled through that single grille before it can be heated by the furnace.

Here’s what happens when there isn’t enough return air in a home:

If the bedroom doors are closed, each bedroom becomes pressurized, forcing air into the bedroom walls and ceiling. In the winter, this humid air can contact cold surfaces and lead to condensation and mold.

Also, the main return air grille is starving for air. This then causes the hallway and living room to be depressurized as air is pulled from the attic, cracks in the walls, back into the hallway.

In the winter, the air that is pulled from the attic is cold and this increases the heating load. Conversely, during the summer, the air that is sucked indoors is hot and humid; this increases both the sensible and latent load on the air conditioner and increases power consumption.

There are three possible ways to solve the pressurized-bedroom problem. Each bedroom needs either:

A return air grille ducted back to the furnace;

A through-the-wall transfer grille connecting the bedroom to the hallway;

A crossover duct connecting a ceiling grille in the bedroom with a ceiling grille in the hallway.

The best option is of course the more expensive one: install a return grille/duct into every conditioned room of the house. Through-the-wall transfer grilles are a cheaper solution, but they have a major drawback: noise transmission. People in the hallway can often hear what goes on in the bedroom if a through-the-wall option is used.

A third option is a crossover duct. In this approach, a ceiling grille is placed in each bedroom and then connected to a grille in the hall. While a crossover duct will transmit sound, it will not be as noticeable as a through-the-wall return air.

Before considering a crossover duct, it should be noted that there are some disadvantages to this approach. A great deal of heat loss can occur in an attic space and it would be necessary in northern climates to insulate the duct work and this approach is not recommended in the Northern hemispheres.

Wondering which option best suits your needs? Call a professional and certified contractor who can go over the options with you.

Bateman Jewellers your Trusted Saskatoon Jeweller

Here Cam shares a tip on Clearing the Air with Lampe Berger:

If you've checked out our in-store Lampe Berger display but have never been sure if this type of purifying system will work in your home (especially if you have have tweens or younger children) then here is a perspective from a Ottawa-based lifestyle blogger. You might find her take on this product "refreshing"!

After two weeks taking turns curling up on the couch to hog the blankets and the tissues, yesterday we were all finally well enough to have people over. And by “people” I mean “the kids’ friends” because when are we ever entertaining? (Rarely. Who has the energy?) In the wintertime, I like to light my favourite pine-scented candle or throw a batch of cookies in the oven to make the house smell warm and welcoming and mask the ever-present scent of fried egg whites (I eat a lot of egg whites), but yesterday I tried something a little different: a beautiful air purifying lamp, Lampe Berger. Lampe Berger sent me one to facilitate this review and has generously offered a starter kit to one lucky try small things reader so you can try it too.

What makes Lampe Berger different than your run-of-the-mill air freshener is its patented burner, originally developed over 100 years ago in France (ooh la la!) to help disinfect hospitals. The burner purifies and perfumes the air, destroying the molecules that make undesirable smells and diffusing one of over 50 scents of your choosing, including a fragrance-free So Neutral blend to use on its own or dilute another scent.

There are over 100 different lamps to choose from, ranging from classic designs like my Ovalie lamp, to more trendy and/or ornate models. I read the instructions a few times because I’m bit bumbling and nervous around flames (I almost lost my eyebrows the one time I tried to light the barbeque) but really, it’s very straightforward:

  • Remove the protective top, stopper, burner and wick
  • Insert the funnel and fill the lamp 2/3 full (I used the Fresh Linen scent)
  • Remove the funnel, insert the wick and burner and put the stopper on
  • Wait for 20 minutes
  • Remove the stopper and light the burner
  • Wait two minutes
  • Blow out the flame and put on the protective top
  • When the air is perfumed as you like, remove the protective top and put the stopper on the burner

My seven-year-old has lots of practice blowing out candles on birthday cakes so we let her blow out the flame. But it was hands-off after that.

Our main floor is all of 500 square feet, so in 20 minutes or so the entire downstairs smelled fresh and clean. A few hours later we made fish sticks for dinner and the house smelled like a wharf, but I lit the lamp again and within minutes Captain Highliner was a guest no longer. It’s like magic!

I’d love you to try it and see for yourself. To win a set just like mine (that’s a lamp, a burner, a 180 ml Home fragrance and a 180 ml So Neutral fragrance –a $48 value!), enter your contact information here then come back and tell me which Lampe Berger lamp and/or scent you’d like to try. You must leave a comment to be eligible. The giveaway is open to Canadians (excluding Quebec) and ends March 8, 2015.

You can learn more about Lampe Berger on their website, Facebook page, Instagram account and on Twitter and follow them everywhere at #LampeBerger. Lampe Berger products are widely available across Canada. In Ottawa you’ll find them at C.A. Paradis, Suite Dreams Home Emporium, Hallmark Davis (Carling) and The Cookoo’s Nest.

Best of luck!

Kari Calder a Trusted Saskatoon Real Estate expert quick fixes to a big winter problem

The decision to purchase your home is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, and will also be one of your largest investments. Done right, it can also be one of the most exciting and fulfilling times in your life! Kari Calder a saskatoon Realtor with Century 21 Fusion is there to help you through the process, and provide you and your family with the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you have a realtor working with your best interests in mind.

Here she shares quick fixes to a winter problem:

Icicles are a beautiful part of the winter scene but located on your house they spell trouble. Snow covered roofs and freezing weather create the perfect condition for something called ice damming. They are thick ridges of ice along the eaves and can tear off gutters, loosen shingles, and can cause water damage inside your home through the ceiling.

Here’s how an ice dam is formed:
-heat collects in the attic and warms the roof except at the eaves
-snow melts on the warm roof and freezes on the cold eaves.
-ice accumulates along the edges, forming a dam. Meltwater from the warm roof builds up and penetrates under the shingles and into your home.

What can you do to solve this problem? Don’t chip away the ice with a hammer or chisel, it’s dangerous for your roof. Salt also won’t work correctly to fix the problem. There are two quick solutions that will work short of praying for warmer weather.

-blow in cold air to the attic. If you direct a fan at the underside of the roof where water is coming in it should help to freeze the water
-another recommended method is to safely rake the snow off the roof with a roof rake so it’s melt won’t have a chance to cause issue.

The most effective long term solution is to reduce or eliminate any sources of heat in the attic by insulating well and to ensure the attire space is properly ventilated. Ensure that your Saskatoon real estate investment is properly taken care of and there won’t be any surprises along the way.
