Trusted Saskatoon Flooring Pros Western Carpet and Hardwood in Saskatchewan

Western Carpet One Floor & Home is a locally owned and operated flooring store servicing Saskatoon and area since 1974. Their stunning showroom offers a comfortable shopping experience for every type of flooring. Whether it is Carpet, Hardwood, Ceramic Tile, Laminate flooring, Cork, Sheet vinyl, or area rugs, you will find it at Western Carpet One Floor & Home a Trusted Saskatoon Flooring StoreIn their latest Saskatoon flooring tip, Western Carpet discusses how hardwood is a good option even in Saskatchewan's harsh climate.

Being a business owner in the beautiful Province of Saskatchewan, I am very familiar with the extreme weather challenges that we face throughout the year. Although we are extremely resilient as a society, our homes, and the products we put in them may not always be.

A question we get quite often is “Is hardwood a good option in our climate?”

The answer is YES - but under the right circumstances. The truth is hardwood is a natural product that requires a specific temperature and humidity level to be maintained throughout the year. This can be difficult to manage in Saskatchewan with our very dry winters, humid summers, and rainstorms. Squeaking, gapping, cupping, delaminating, and splitting are all real challenges that present themselves if the right steps are not taken. With that being said, there is a way to put a beautiful hardwood floor in your home.

Why and how hardwood can be a great option in Saskatchewan:

  • First and foremost, nothing can replicate the beauty, feel and texture that a real hardwood floor can provide.
  • As a granite counter-top can increase the value of your home, so can the flooring you choose. Hardwood instills a value to your property that no other floor can provide. If you look at a realtor’s fact sheet, they will almost always point out if the flooring is a hardwood which creates a real and at times perceived value.
  • Maintaining consistent humidity in the home is a must. To do this you need to have a high-quality humidifier installed on your furnace which allows for humidity to flow through your home as the furnace is running. We also recommend running your furnace fan throughout the summer to help with airflow and reduce humidity levels.
  • Hardwood flooring has evolved over the years. For example, solid hardwood is less and less a requested product in Saskatchewan with the trend moving towards engineered hardwood. This type of hardwood provides more stability and resiliency in our climate along with longer and wider board lengths.
  • The installation of hardwood has also evolved. When a hardwood floor that is wider than 5” is installed, using a glue assist method is a requirement by most manufacturers (here at Western Carpet One, we will do it on all 5” or wider boards for ALL manufacturers). Using a specific type of construction adhesive, a bead of glue is applied under the wood that creates another layer of stability.
  • Not all hardwood flooring is made equal. We recommend purchasing your flooring from a reputable retailer that provides reputable brands. The fact is you get what you pay for - as in any industry there is always someone willing to try and make a product cheaper. In many cases to make something cheaper requires that something gets left out. The construction of a quality engineered hardwood is a craft that requires much skill (BUYER BEWARE).
  • As not all hardwood is created equal, not all installations are equal. The knowledge and skill of a professional hardwood installer cannot easily be replicated. I recommend choosing a reputable store that can provide you with a warranty and peace of mind that your flooring will be installed as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

In closing, seek professionals to educate, recommend, and install your hardwood flooring. If done correctly you will have a floor that is natural, beautiful, and timeless. If you are looking for a knowledgeable sales team with top-end products and experienced installers for your next hardwood project then please consider our team at Western Carpet One.

Trusted Saskatoon Flooring Store Western Carpet One Share a Recent Project

Western Carpet One Floor & Home is a locally owned and operated servicing Saskatoon and area since 1974. They are a full-service store offering no charge estimates and full installation on all flooring products. A newly expanded stunning showroom offers a comfortable shopping experience for every type of flooring. Whether it is Carpet, Hardwood, Ceramic Tile, Laminate flooring, Cork, Sheet vinyl or area rugs, you will find it at Western Carpet One Floor & Home a Trusted Saskatoon Flooring Store. In their latest Saskatoon flooring tip Western Carpet shares a project that they did that was featured on the Karndean website.

The perfect mix of rustic and refined, the modern farmhouse trend has taken off over the last few years. Featuring clean, crisp lines and rustic elements throughout, you will find there are varieties of ways you can incorporate this design trend into your space.

To help you get this look in your home, we have narrowed down our top four favourite features of the modern farmhouse look. As an added bonus, we had the pleasure of speaking with @farmhouseonfifth owner Kera Knight, and picked her brain on how she designed her home around this trend. From the striking white walls, to her light rustic floor, and everything in between, see how Kera displays our top four farmhouse features in her home.

Neutral Colour Palette

When designing your space to incorporate the modern farmhouse look, it is important to remember to stick to a neutral colour palette. Vibrant whites will add a touch of modernity, while rustic brown elements encapsulate the farmhouse feel.
Kera chose our Karndean Washed Butternut design as the base of her home. Boasting a light hue with subtle grey undertones, this neutral floor compliments the modern farmhouse trend. Real butternut is soft, and hard to come by in its natural format, but our luxury vinyl Washed Butternut design is durable and can hold up to everyday wear and tear in a busy home.  Waterproof, durable, and most importantly, kid and pet friendly, our Washed Butternut visual not only suits this style with a refined rustic look, but will last a lifetime in Kera’s home.

Mixed Materials Add Texture

While a neutral colour palette is key, mixing materials and textures is every designer's secret to adding warmth back into a space. Instead of leaving her exposed fireplace bricks their unfinished colour, Kera painted over them in a white shade to keep in tune with the neutral colour pallet. Atop the exposed white brick is a striking natural wood mantelpiece that becomes the focal point of the room. The mixture of light tones from the brick and warm browns from the wood adds visual interest to this space. An inexpensive way of incorporating texture into your space is with pillows, blankets, or accent chairs. Leather woven accent chairs, a cotton or linen sofa, and a cozy throw blanket creates depth and character.

Touch of Nature

Adding natural touches doesn’t have to be expensive: an inexpensive option is greenery. In Kera’s space, the mixture of light, earthy tones from the exposed wood mantle and greenery placed atop emits a comforting feel as they symbolize our connection to nature. When selecting plant pots for your space, choose natural basket options made of wicker, or textured white stone pots.

Shaker-style cabinetry

Shaker-style cabinets are a popular trend as they are versatile, and suit a multitude of interior styles. You may have seen them in kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms alike. Kera’s white shaker style cabinets showcase the simplicity of modern design, while the recessed panelling and black hardware adds farmhouse charm.

Trusted Saskatoon flooring store Expert share a flooring tip on Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

Everything you need to know about Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT):

There is a segment of the floor covering market that hasn’t received the full attention it deserves. Commercial designers/specifiers are huge fans of this, but what they know hasn’t filtered down to be shared with flooring consumers at large.

The features and benefits of Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) are outlined below, and these points separate LVT from the mix of other vinyl goods. Luxury Vinyl Tile couldn’t be more different, not only in how it’s manufactured but in the total aesthetic and applications.

Can you believe that it is now possible to have the look, graining, and character of real hardwood in vinyl tile? Today’s technology in replication processes is the first step in creating vinyl “wood” planks and textured “stone” tiles that rival the real thing. Some of today’s big city design firms have decorated their office floors with elegant luxury vinyl “wood” planking or vinyl “slate.” These top designers can have any flooring material they want, yet many of them choose LVT. Here’s why:

Incredibly realistic photo replication of natural materials (photogravure process): The look and feel of nature’s best materials at a lower cost are a reality of LVT manufacturing.

Brands that offer 100% vinyl material: Vinyl flooring satisfies Green building standards and earns LEED points in commercial applications.

Inherent safety features: Meets requirements of commercial flammability codes, slip resistant requirement, and a menu of other safety codes.

Ease of maintenance: Simple damp mopping is the recommended cleaning procedure for LVT floors.

Excellent selection of sizes and shapes: The size options vary by manufacturer, but many styles are available in 12 x 12”, 18 x 18”, 12 x 24” sizes, and planks in standard (3 x 36” 4.5 x 36) and extra-large widths (7 or 9’ widths).

Naturally water resistant: LVT floors are inherently water-resistant (and fairly impervious to wet spills from above). It’s important to install over flat, dry, approved substrates so that no water seepage occurs beneath the floor.

Scratch, stain, dent and scuff resistant: Specialized wear layers (most common are 20mm). Then the floors are coated with urethane to enhance durability.

Cost-effective: Economics factor favourably into the specification of LVT for both commercial and residential applications, giving the look and feel of rich, natural materials at a lower cost.

Exceptional durability: Because LVT is constructed to withstand commercial wear and tear, it’s probably “over-qualified” for residential use and can handle high-traffic areas with ease. Warranties vary by manufacturer, but it’s not unusual to see 20-25 year warranties on brand name LVT.

More resilient than other hard surface floors: Because there are multi-layers of vinyl in LVT as well as a resilient backing as the foundation, LVT tiles and planks have more resilience underfoot. It’s easier to stand on for long periods of time AND as an added benefit, it tends to be warmer underfoot than ceramic.

Amazing aesthetics: There has been a stunning transformation in the design aesthetics of LVT in the last five years. If you are linking it to “industrial” looking floors, this is where you need to throw away your misconceptions and do some research. This may be the one biggest factor that has caused interior designers to stand up and take note of the new brand of LVT. The realism of the total look, including distressed wood finishes, stone and slate tactile surface textures, and even woven textiles imbedded in the wear layers, are grabbing attention.

There is a reason that Luxury Vinyl Tile is gaining huge momentum in the consumer market, and the reasons are pretty well described above. It’s time for you to be pleasantly amazed.
