In their latest tip, they explain why the right glass is important to use on your framing projects.

The Right Glass is So Important to Use on Your Framing Projects

There are many kinds of glass to choose from when you are framing your pictures. You need to ask yourself if there are lots of windows and lights in the space that you will be hanging your pictures. The most important thing about glass is that it protects your artwork from dust and the environment. The UV rays can destroy your artwork in a very short time. There are 3 options for UV protective glass: Museum glass, UV clear glass, and UV reflection control. We believe that if something is worth framing, it is worth protecting with the best quality glass and acid-free materials. We see so many things that have been hanging for a few years and they are faded and very often we are not able to replace them.

Museum glass is the most expensive, but it truly is the best. It is 99% UV protective and it is clear so it will not have that annoying reflection.

UV Reflection Control glass is also 99% UV protective, but it is chemically etched on one side so that you don’t get an undesirable reflection. You will also lose some of the brightness and sharpness from your artwork. It is nice on bright coloured photographs, not on something with soft colour and fine lines.

UV Clear glass is also 99% UV protective but you do get a reflection, especially if you hang your picture across from a window or even hanging near table lights. You do not lose any brightness or detail but you do get that annoying reflection.

There is also just clear glass, the kind that comes in those big box store frames, the inexpensive ones. If you have an old photo or anything that is one of a kind, do not put your one and only piece in it. It will fade out in a few years and you will be very unhappy. As well, you need acid free materials to back your picture. Regular clear glass is the least costly and is OK to use on something that can be replaced easily or something that you know you will not want to keep for a long time.

Non-reflective glass is chemically etched on one side so you don’t get a reflection, but it will not stop your art or photo from fading. The poor mountain lion photographed below has turned blue from being framed in glass that isn’t UV protective.

TO MAT OR NOT TO MAT YOUR ARTWORK & PHOTOGRAPHS . . .

Have you ever wondered why mats are used in framing artwork and photographs?

Martha Stewart shares some matting examples here :

Well, they serve several purposes.  One of the main purposes is to protect the piece in which you are framing.   Artwork and photographs over time, and with temperature changes, can stick to the glass if there is no barrier in between the piece and the glass. Glossy photographs are the most likely to stick to glass – matte finish papers usually won’t.

A piece of fine art should be allowed to ‘breathe’ in the frame (expand and contract) and the mat allows for that. The mat serves as a layer of protection so that the image is not in contact with the glass.  Especially if you have an original piece of art (like a pastel) or a photograph that you want to preserve for years to come.

No Mat vs Mat

Another way that mats are used is to make an image stand out.  When you mat your image it can help by adding depth and dimension to your piece, thus making the eye focus in on the image.  It can also help enhance certain colors in the piece making them pop off the page.  If you would like to add more depth and dimension to your work you can double or even triple mat your piece.  Also, if you have a small image, instead of enlarging it you can put a larger mat on it, making the piece overall a lot bigger.

Most picture framers will have dozens of colors and textures to choose from to help enhance your piece and help you show off your precious piece of artwork and photographs, as well as show off a little of your personality at the same time.

Double Mat

Always choose mats that are acid-free so they will not harm your artwork or photographs and the bevel will not yellow over time.

So…. to mat or not? Some pieces of art need to be matted; pastels (so the color doesn’t transfer to the glass), needlework, shiny photos, and delicate papers like rice paper.

It also comes down to budget  – single mat vs triple mat – and personal preference. Same with the width of mats. I love the look of a wide mat on a piece of art… others don’t.

Creative Team Takes the Lead with Personalized Art Services:

I love, love, love what I do,” says Sherry Morris, owner of J&S Picture Frame Warehouse. “We have a great business and a great team that works well together. We try to make sure no customer leaves here unhappy with either the service or the quality of work they received.”

For 36 years, Morris has served the community for all custom photograph and artwork framing needs. In 2001 she incorporated photograph restoration, scanning and large format printing into her business. With endless combinations of frames and mats, customers can see the possibilities that can be done with their photographs and artwork right before their eyes. The J&S team also accepts photo restoration projects that involves taking a photograph, scanning it to become a high resolution digital file, completing whatever changes and corrections are necessary. This process can help to preserve a customer’s photographic memory that might otherwise be lost. These new digital fi les can be printed onto acid-free paper, canvas or vinyl. Thanks to the recent addition of a new 60-inch, 12-colour printer, artists and photographers can fully appreciate the superior large format printing services offered at J&S.

Aside from the superior technology and expert staff, Morris says the longevity of her business can be attributed to this simple rule: “Customers are always No. 1.”

Morris, already a member of Trusted Saskatoon, was recently awarded the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Outstanding Ethics and Integrity in Business, in the Retail Products and Services Category. Morris says the win came as a surprise, but she is embracing it wholeheartedly. “Our customers are always the first priority. If you come to our business to have an item framed, and after all is completed, tell me you do not like the mat selection, then we will get together and look for a new one. We’ve had customers return after taking their work home, and tell us that the colour or style is just not right. We will then make it right.” Selecting the proper frame and matting can be difficult, Morris acknowledges. “When a customer has their project hanging in their home, we want them to be totally satisfied and happy with it.”

Everything Morris and her team do is done in-house at the J&S shop. This is an essential part of the personalized service given to each and every customer. “People need to know that their treasures are being taken care of properly,” Morris explains. At J&S, the staff that assist you at the counter are an integral part of the team that will be completing your project.

People often hand over family heirlooms and ask the team to safeguard them and turn them into a cherished piece of art. “Customer satisfaction and creativity — those are two things that are very important here!” says John Cave, J&S’s in-house reprographics expert. “We are always striving to come up with new ideas for displaying your photographs, artwork or family treasures.”

Whether you are an artist wishing to make prints of your artwork, a parent seeking creative framing for your children’s masterpieces, or looking to transform your grandmother’s dusty collectibles into a priceless framed memorabilia, the creative team at J&S Picture Frame Warehouse will find the perfect way to display your piece of art.

Here they share some great tips on how to hang frames securely:

It is important to hang frames securely, using appropriate supplies and techniques. There are different methods you can use depending on the application. Read on for specific examples.

To Hold Heavy Mirrors

Avoid the use of picture wire. Hang directly from strap hangers (a loop over a flat plate that screws into the frame). Rather than traditional wall hooks, use wall anchors such as Molly Bolts, that go through the sheet rock and lock into it.

To Prevent Theft

Security Hangers are available that firmly hold all sides of the frame in place on the wall. A special key tool is needed to lock it and again to unlock it. These are generally used in public places but are also good where the frame may easily be bumped.

To Protect Kids

In a kid’s room where things are thrown around, use Security Hangers. If you don’t have access to them, try strap hangers on each side of the frame and heavy duty hooks in the wall for the hanger to sit into. Do not rely on just nails in the wall as they can fall out of the wall or the frame can jump off the nail if something is thrown at it.

To Avoid Crooked Frames on the Wall

When frames are hung from a single point, they usually shift on the wall over time. Both for safety and also to keep frames straight, always hang everything from two points. On heavier pieces this also helps distribute the weight.

To Keep Frames Flush to the Wall

Screw eyes that are often used to attach wire to the frame tend to make the frames lean out from the wall more than they need to. Also, excess slack in the wire can cause the top to lean out. By switching to strap hangers, you can overcome both problems. These hangers are flatter and give you the option of hanging directly from the hanger versus using wire.

Here Sherry shares a tip on Reframing:

Reframing:

Sometimes our older framed pieces need some TLC and revitalization. Archival framing wasn’t readily available a generation ago. Past framing doesn’t always reflect our current taste or style. These pieces can be reframed with a more modern design and conservation materials to make sure they will still be enjoyed and preserved.

Come in today and let us show you how we can you showcase your special piece for years to come!
