Getting Your Outdoor Space Ready for Fall

Back to school. Leaves falling. Pumpkin picking. Fall is here and getting your outside space ready for the changing season should be a priority. Whether you’re wrapping up the outdoor season or settling in for a long fall, these tips will help you prepare your deck, porch, patio, or backyard for fall.

Deck Décor

Cooler nights call for warm lighting, fires, and cozy furniture. Decking your furniture out with big, fluffy pillows and blankets can help set the cozy tone in your backyard. While in the summer months, blankets likely aren’t needed, having a variety of indoor/outdoor blankets available for guests can be a great way to keep them warm and extend your evening. For an extra pop of fall colour, use reds, oranges and yellows in your pillow and blanket choices. Also, adding fall wreaths, pumpkins, mums, fall foliage or gourds can amp up your décor game.

An Element of Fire

Another great way to keep warm this fall is with a fire pit or table. Wheatland has several great options that will fit nearly any type of backyard setup. Stay cozy and warm with any of our options this fall. Have specific questions about how to take care of your fire table in the fall and winter? Contact Wheatland today!

Light It Up

Lighting is an inexpensive addition you can make to your backyard to make it feel warm, cozy and inviting. String lights put off the perfect amount of lighting to give a warm ambience to any setting. Candles are another great way to add warm lighting but try a flameless option to keep your yard and home safe.

Cover It Up

Buying a cover for your patio furniture, including your fire pit table, is a great way to protect it from wind, rain and the impending winter weather. Durable, weather-resistant covers will help protect your investment and keep snow, leaves and other elements out of your fire pit table.

Mahana Outdoor | A Warm Breeze

ZONE HEATING

The real added value of the Mahana outdoor fireplace is rooted in where we drew the inspiration for the name from – Mahana is Hawaiian for “warm breeze”.

Both sizes of the Mahana outdoor feature a quiet blower system designed to warm your outdoor room well beyond the capabilities of a standard outdoor fireplace.

WOOD CONSTRUCTION

Fire and wood don’t usually go together, but the Mahana outdoor room fireplace was designed in such a way that you can build into standard wood frame construction and finish with a variety of combustible facing materials.

SAFETY FIRST

While the full-width glass door protects the fireplace flame from winds up to 40mph, the Mahana’s mesh safety screen and cool-to-the-touch enclosure protect your friends and family from potential burns.

The Outdoor Room | New Possibilities

Homeowners are building increasingly elaborate outdoor rooms and living spaces that essentially become an extension of their home. They want more flexible fire feature options to bring their vision to life. Traditionally designated for indoor use only, many fireplace models are now approved for use in certain protected outdoor room fireplace applications.

Trusted Saskatoon Wheatland Fireplace Inspiration & Customizing Your Outdoor Kitchen

Your first step into the beautiful Wheatland Fireplace Kitchen & Bath Saskatoon showroom will help you understand why Wheatland Fireplace has been given the Thumbs up by Trusted Saskatoon. Wheatland loves their customers and as a result, their customers love and TRUST them. In their latest outdoor living tip, they explain how to customize your outdoor kitchen.

How To Customize Your Outdoor Kitchen

Custom outdoor kitchens are in high demand because they add value to the home, are great for entertaining, and expands your property’s living space. Let’s explore the most important factors to consider when customizing your own unique outdoor dream kitchen.

Define the Space

Just as homes come in many shapes and sizes, the same is true for outdoor kitchens. A few common kitchen shapes are L-shaped, linear, and even U-Shaped kitchens. Another popular option is a two-piece kitchen, where there’s a section for cooking, storage, and accessories. The other section usually features a bar and is used for dining and entertaining. Which layout sounds most suitable for your outdoor area?

It’s important to consider placement when you are incorporating a custom kitchen into your space. Here are a few things you’ll need to think about when turning your outdoor dream into a reality:

1. Proximity
One crucial aspect of where you decide to place your kitchen is how far away it is from your home. Since some of the food preparation will need to be done inside, you’ll want to place your kitchen in close distance with the entrance of your backyard. This will allow for hassle-free transportation between the two locations.

2. Backyard Size
The size of your backyard should factor in to how large you build your outdoor kitchen. Take some time to strategize how much square footage you’re willing to give up for your custom kitchen design. The size you want your kitchen to be is completely up to you.

3. Zoning Laws
Be sure to check with local and national ordinances when determining the size and placement of your outdoor dining area. Zoning laws are in place to regulate how your property can be used. It’d be a shame to finalize a beautiful outdoor kitchen project that might not satisfy local codes and regulations.

Pro tip: Find a professional. There are many technical factors to consider when building an outdoor kitchen, such as heat clearances, electrical accessibility, and zoning laws, so finding the right person for the job will aid in creating a safe and fully optimized outdoor entertainment area.

Prioritize Your Accessories

When it comes to indoor cooking and dining, what’s most important to you? Perhaps it’s the shimmering, stainless-steel appliances or plentiful amount of pantry space. Some homeowners really value a kitchen island with a bar for entertaining guests and countertop space with added storage.

Since an outdoor kitchen brings all that you love about your indoor kitchen outdoors, we recommend reflecting on what’s most important to you as you customize this new area. Here’s a quick list of grills, storage units, and other accessories commonly used in outdoor kitchen designs:
  • Drawers and access doors for storage and trash
  • Charcoal, gas, and electric grills for cooking
  • Sink with faucet for cleaning
  • Refrigerator for beverages

Explore What’s Popular

Once you’ve built the framework for your outdoor kitchen, the next step is deciding the kind of look you want for the exterior finish. Homeowners commonly use the same materials on their home for the exterior of their outdoor kitchen for a clean, unifying look. Other popular materials used for the base are stucco, brick, or stone veneer, also known as stacked stone. Supercast™ concrete and granite are suitable options for the countertop section of outdoor kitchens.

Many backyards also incorporate some kind of shading, such as a gazebo, awning, pergola, or umbrella, to further define the outdoor kitchen area and fend off a bright and scorching sun. These sources of shade can be outfitted with outdoor lighting to make kitchens an all-day, one-stop-shop for relaxation and entertaining.

Trusted Saskatoon Jewellers at Batemans Share Their Riedel Red Wine Glass Guide

Bateman Jewellers are Trusted Saskatoon jewellery experts! Did you know that they are the oldest independent jewellery store in Saskatoon? Bateman Jewellers maintain that the relationship with their clients is very important to them. In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they share their Riedel red wine glass guide.

THE RIEDEL RED WINE GLASS GUIDE

Bateman Jewellers carry a range of housewares - including Riedel Glassware

FOR POPULAR VARIETALS AND GRAPES

With decades of research into the Grape Varietal sensation and support from the world’s wine experts, RIEDEL knows that the enjoyment of aroma, taste, texture and finish of a wine is maximized by using the right "Wine Instrument".

A RIEDEL GLASS TURNS A SIP OF WINE INTO A CELEBRATION

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Considered by many as the king of the Bordeaux region and grown in almost every major wine-producing country, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most recognizable wine grape varieties. Used for numerous red wines, this grape ripens late and performs best in warm soils. Cabernet Sauvignon covers an array of flavours and scents, from herbaceous when not fully ripe to blackcurrant-flavoured in more ripened bunches. These glasses are perfect for full-bodied, complex red wines high in tannin.

RIEDEL Performance Cabernet/Merlot - The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance. The optic impact in the RIEDEL Performance series adds both a design feature and an astounding effect on wine's aromatics.

RIEDEL Veritas Cabernet/Merlot - The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance.

RIEDEL Vinum Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot - Vinum is RIEDEL's basic varietal-specific stemmed series. Designed in 1986 by 10th-generation glassmaker Georg J. Riedel, Vinum was created to ensure every wine lover could afford varietal-specific glassware.

RIEDEL Extreme Cabernet - Its diamond shape works beautifully for big and bold New World wines as the extreme angles offer more space to develop aromas. The generous size of this glass emphasizes fruit, smooths out the tannin's rough edges and bitter qualities, and allows wines to achieve balance.
The Extreme glasses are named after their extreme contours. The bowls mimic polished diamonds and their wide angles allow plenty of room for the wine to breathe. They are specifically designed to enhance and emphasize the pleasant softness and generally fruity notes of the New World wines.

RIEDEL Winewings Cabernet/Merlot -
Its unique flat-bottomed design brings forward primary fruit aromas, allowing the bouquet to develop in detail. It balances the intensity of flavour with the bitter tannins typical of thick-skinned red wine grapes.
RIEDEL Winewings is a brutally functional glass collection, taking wine's aromas and flavours on a flight. Made up of several new shapes, these flat-bottomed glasses are reminiscent of the wing of an aircraft. This means the wine has a greater surface area in the glass, which increases the levels of evaporation.

SL RIEDEL Stemless Wings Cabernet/Merlot -
The glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance. This glass was redesigned by Georg Riedel in 2020 to ensure its smaller size maintains the delicate and important characteristics of each wine.
This stemless creation is the perfect complement to the original stemmed series. To ensure the tumblers sit comfortably within the drinker's hand, each Grape Varietal shape required a set of new prototypes to determine how much the glass could be reduced while maintaining the delicate and important characteristics of each wine.

RIEDEL O Wine Tumbler Cabernet/Merlot - Designed in 2004, the RIEDEL O Tumbler was the first varietal-specific wine tumbler in history. O is an innovative take on the casual wine glass, based on the benchmark shapes of RIEDEL's Vinum series. Better yet, the O Tumbler fits into every dishwasher so broken stems are a thing of the past.

RIEDEL Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru - This shape was one of the original 'wine friendly' glasses designed by 9th generation Claus J. RIEDEL. The generous size of this glass allows the bouquet to develop fully, and smooths out the rough edges. It emphasizes the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allows wines to achieve balance.

Sommeliers was the world’s first wine-friendly glass collection and a design revolution created by Claus J. Riedel (9th generation). The range adheres to the Bauhaus design principle of form follows function, as Claus J. Riedel had discovered that certain wines showed more depth and better balance when enjoyed from certain shapes. Thin-blown and unadorned, Sommeliers was the beginning of RIEDEL's dominance in the global wine glass market.

Riedels master glassmakers individually craft each item so every piece has a unique character. Due to the nature of crafting, small tolerances in the size and weight of each product, tiny bubbles, imperfections, or slight surface variations are an acceptable part of the process.

Trusted Saskatoon Jewellers at Batemans Discuss Recycling Gold Jewellery

Bateman Jewellers are Trusted Saskatoon jewellery experts! Did you know that they are the oldest independent jewellery store in Saskatoon?  Bateman Jewellers maintain that the relationship with their clients is very important to them. In their latest Saskatoon jewellery tip, they discuss recycling gold jewellery.

IS RECYCLED GOLD THE FUTURE OF JEWELLERY?

Gold Recycling

It is estimated that for every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, over 34 kg of gold can be recovered!

Alternatives to mining, such as recycled gold from e-waste, exist today and we are now able to craft beautiful jewellery while limiting our negative impact on the environment.

The future is here!

What does recycled gold mean?

Gold is a highly valued and much loved precious metal that is perfect for recycling. Indeed, gold does not decline in quality when recycled.

Gold can be found and recycled in many surprising places and due to this being largely unknown, much of it, unfortunately, goes to landfill.

Currently, around 90% of recycled gold comes from jewellery and the remaining 10% comes from other sources

What is the impact of gold mining?

“There is no such thing as clean gold, unless it’s recycled or vintage.” - Alan Septoff, Communications Manager for the No Dirty Gold Campaign

1. Human Rights

A recently published article from Human Rights Watch highlights some of the key human rights abuses that can take place in the gold mining industry. For instance, in Venezuela, a high number of reserves of precious metals, including gold, is controlled by armed rebels. Those syndicates “exert strict control over the populations who live and work there, impose abusive working conditions, and viciously treat those accused of theft and other offences.”

2. Waste

One single gold ring can potentially create a staggering 20 tons of mining waste! This waste contains toxic chemicals which can contaminate the nearby water supply and soil. In some cases, local residents are exposed to chemicals such as mercury, which creates serious long-term illnesses. Mercury is a cheap product used to reveal the gold from the rock. Unfortunately, it causes devastating long-term impacts on the people and the planet.

3. Use of Water

Large-scale projects can use an average of 60,000 - 100,000 cubic meters of water every day. It would provide the basic water needs for a population equal to that of a large U.S. city for a year!

4. Acid Mine Drainage

One major issue with Underground Mining is called Fool’s Gold, or Iron Sulphides. It occurs when the rock reacts with oxygen to make what is then called Sulfuric AcidThis acidic process drains from the mine site and can be up to 300 times more concentrated than acid rain! Once this process begins, it is very complicated to stop the spread of contamination in the water.

5. Air Pollution

The electricity produced by burning coal and other fossil fuels in the mining process generates air pollution, smog, and greenhouse gases. As gold mines are typically large-scale operations requiring a sufficient amount of heavy machinery and earth-moving vehicles, airborne pollution is a significant environmental issue.

6. Wildlife

Gold mining destroys local wildlife, habitats and important ecosystems, mostly because of the pollution produced and the vast amount of land each mine required. For instance, the largest mine in the world, the Grasberg Mine, located in Indonesia, operates on 27,400 acres of land and has been a source of ongoing friction and conflict due to its negative environmental impact on the surrounding ecosystems.

Recycle Your Gold with Batemans - gold-recycling

Looking to recycle your old gold? Or perhaps you just have a bunch of rings and chains lying around you never wear anymore. Did you know that you can use your old gold as money at Bateman Jewellers? Bring in your items for evaluation and we will happily offer you a trade-in value towards anything in the store.  Not looking for anything to buy? That's okay too because if there isn't an item you would like, we will also provide you with a cash-out option as well.

Please bring your items to our downtown Saskatoon location. Please note that depending on the quantity of items, you may have to leave them for evaluation as this process can take some time, especially if there are gems set into the gold. All cash-out items require government picture identification and payment is by cheque within 3-5 business days.

Bateman Jewellers continues to have a strong reputation in Saskatoon, and this is due to their loyal customers who appreciate the friendly, family-orientated store that they have come to expect!
