5 Reasons to Get Office Air Conditioning

Air conditioning not only creates a more comfortable and efficient workplace for clients and employees alike but did you know not having AC might be costing you money? Find out how, and why you should have office air conditioning from JOB Heating & Air Conditioning.

1. Workplace Efficiency

Many studies have proved that an overheated workplace can affect employees' productivity. Shockingly, in most cases employees waste a minimum of one hour of their working time due to heat; in some cases like extremely high temperature, this number can be much higher. Also, employees try to avoid work when they are on the hot seat, and these factors affect employee productivity. Air conditioning systems in the office can reduce the waste of time caused by overheating, and that is a big reason to have air conditioning.

2. Office Air Conditioning Promotes Better Health For Your Employees

Being a great business owner should be a high priority, however, the well-being of your employees should be the number one priority. If your employees enjoy themselves, they are less likely to be sick or irritable. This reduces medical expenses, therefore you get more productivity from employees. Reducing the temperature creates a non-favorable condition for germs to thrive, makes your employees feel better, and helps them stay healthy.

3. Your Clients Are Refreshed

When you install AC in your workplace, not only will your employees feel comfortable, but your clients will as well. You can have your clients or customers come to your office without any hesitation due to discomfort. This increases the chances of your business growing.

4. Comfortable Work Environment

Air conditioning in the office not only gives energy to your employees for hard work, but they work smartly as well. It is a proven fact that people that work in a comfortable environment with proper air conditioning make fewer mistakes. Also, a comfortably cool office can increase the concentration of your employees. Achieving these results is nearly impossible if you have an overheated, uncomfortable office.

5. Saving Money

Most new business owners avoid installing air conditioning in the office due to higher costs and instead, run numerous smaller fans to keep the office cool in summer. The fact is, running these smaller fans costs as much in electricity as air conditioning and often has less desirable results. Indeed, it consumes more power compared to a normal fan, but in the long run, the overall savings are greater with AC. So, if you compare the cost along with the benefits mentioned above, then you can realize the overall savings is more with AC compared to other cooling options.

JEFF FROM JOB WARNS AGAINST FRAUD IN SASKATOON’S HVAC INDUSTRY

The feeling of being ripped off is horrible, and I count myself fortunate that I haven’t been the victim of fraud very much in my life. However,  I am sad to say that I deal with victims of contractor fraud too often in Saskatoon.  In my latest article, I share another example that happened recently, as I want to educate consumers on what to look out for.- Jeff , owner of JOB

Fraud takes many different forms

I was recently at a lady’s home to provide a quote to replace the furnace and air conditioner. Her house was the same as most other homes in our city,  in fact she lives just  4 blocks away from my family. She invited me in and we exchanged pleasantries,  then I asked her the burning question that had been top of mind since I pulled up outside.  Why was she requesting a quote for a new home comfort system in a house that was no more than 12 years old?

She explained that the night before her furnace had stopped working. This was especially an issue as the overnight temperature in Saskatoon had dropped to about  -30C. Unfortunately, she was unaware that JOB offers 24-hour emergency service and she had called another company.

The other company turned up, identified the problem but they didn’t have the part required ( It was 4 am, so I give them a pass on that one,) . They  returned at 8:30 am with the correct part to fix the issue and the tech took it upon himself to go through her furnace and air conditioner. He noted that there were old watermarks both on the side and at the base of the furnace, which I can verify. As someone that has a career in the furnace and air conditioning industry, the source of the water was very evident to me.It was clear that at some point, probably in the summertime, the evaporator coil had frozen and then melted.

One indication about this was the plugged air filter leaning up against the furnace.

The other technician told this very nice lady that her furnace was over ten years old and a crack COULD happen in the heat exchanger (even though he couldn’t find any crack) and that would send carbon monoxide into her home potentially killing her, her partner and her dogs!! If that ominous threat was not enough,  he also told her that her air conditioner unit had a leak and would also need to be replaced.

Now, it is possible that she may have a leak in the air conditioner, but there’s simply no way to determine that when it’s -26C outside!  Saying that she has a leak when there is a dirty filter right there is, “bullcrap!”

The other thing that I haven’t mentioned yet, is the 3 carbon monoxide detectors I saw in her home. I will not downplay carbon monoxide poisoning,  because it is the biggest threat to life that we face in the HVAC industry, however, there was no sign of that here. When questioned, she confirmed that the carbon monoxide detectors had never gone off. In addition, one of the detectors displays the level of CO present and when I checked it showed zero.

Let me be VERY clear here, this person was simply using fear tactics to sell a new furnace and air conditioner to this lady.

If you get a flat tire on your Chevy do you buy a new Mercedes??

“But he said I’m in imminent danger!” Said the lady

Review from clients who received a new furnace from Gibbon.

I was so impressed with the service - right from the initial call to provide a quote, through the whole installation process, and the final return visit to check on the installation and functioning of our new furnace. Upon meeting Brent who provided the quote, I felt confidence in this company. He was courteous, professional and very knowledgeable. His crew that came to install the furnace, Aaron and David were awesome! They were friendly, professional and took great pride in their work. Their team work and work ethic are very admirable too. They cleaned up after their work was done and made sure to go over things with me. Brent returned several days later to see how things were working with the new furnace and reviewed everything with me again. I'm more than happy that we chose this company to replace our old furnace with a new one! Thank You!

A Real Plumbing Story

Recently, while doing a renovation in a very old commercial building, we found, as with a good majority of older structures, that the building had been neglected with many items falling into disrepair.  Some repairs were made incorrectly that negatively affected the structural integrity of the building. As we progressed with the reno, one item after another would crop up causing a one step forward and two steps back approach.

Two crucial steps  that affect any job are the deadline and total cost of that job. This one was no different, the deadline was fast approaching and many people’s lives were going to be negatively affected by missing this deadline. Professional contracting companies are legislated to put a high priority on safety no matter what the scenario. We attend safety courses offered by the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association or by retail suppliers to demonstrate our commitment to safety. The information we garner from the classes is very beneficial to our day to day operations. But what happens when push comes to shove and a deadline is looming, you have many hours and much material on a job that you haven't been paid for? Do you accept that there is "acceptable risk" because of the deadline or that you have money owing to you? I believe the answer to this is, no. Receiving a fine from the Government notwithstanding, I'm the person that after an accident happens will have to go and bring the wife, husband, Mother or Father to the hospital or dare I say morgue. To me this would be the hardest thing I would ever have to do in my life and if I was to ignore a safety concern because of a deadline or budget, how could I look my own family in the eye? As business owners we cannot be on every job site all the time. We rely on our supervisors and employees to bring these concerns to our attention and to deal with them promptly. As sub contractors we have an obligation to bring the safety concern to the General or building owner. But what happens when their good judgement is clouded by that looming deadline or budget restraint? Our training tells us that it doesn't matter. Work must stop and corrections must be in place to ensure the safety of all people on that job site, not just your own worker.

On this job site I mentioned, this was exactly what took place. The instructors in all the classes we have been taking said this would happen but it doesn't really prepare you for the reality when it does. I found myself with my team having an argument about what is considered safe and what measure's should be taken before we continue with work. The irony of this situation was this argument was taking place right beside a broken ladder owned by another trade or the general / owner himself. This was a metaphor for his safety plan on his job site. I had a hard decision to make, forget about the deadline and the financial cost or use "acceptable risk" and hope for the best. That's when I thought " do I want to make that call to a wife, or a new mother?" The answer was emphatically, no.

Upon reflection the valuable lesson that I learned was that safety has no price. Professional contractors of any kind believe and live this every day. Yes sometimes safety can be taken to the extreme or taken advantage of. It is the professional contractor and his commitment to ongoing learning and behavioural change that will make the correct decision when the time comes.

When you choose a contractor you should ask about their commitment to safety and be prepared yourself as the home owner or building owner to make the site safe. Or it could be you having to make the dreaded call to that young mother.

Gibbon Heating and Air your Trusted Saskatoon Air Conditioning and Furnace experts share a tip on Return Air

Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning has been serving Saskatoon and surrounding areas for over 25 Years, Gibbon is a "Total Service" company with trained technicians who are able to provide customers with solutions to all their SASKATOON Heating & Air Conditioning requirements!

Here they share a tip on Return Air:

In many homes return air struggles to find its way back to the furnace. This results in improper pressure balances from room-to-room and often leads to uneven room temperatures. Lack of return air causes comfort complaints, higher energy costs, and can even cause moisture problems throughout a home.

While most HVAC contractors install ducts and registers to deliver air to every room in a house, they often neglect to provide adequate return air back to the furnace. In most homes, there is usually only one return air grille in the common hallway that is attempting to serve the entire house. This means that all of the stale cold air in your home has to be pulled through that single grille before it can be heated by the furnace.

Here’s what happens when there isn’t enough return air in a home:

If the bedroom doors are closed, each bedroom becomes pressurized, forcing air into the bedroom walls and ceiling. In the winter, this humid air can contact cold surfaces and lead to condensation and mold.

Also, the main return air grille is starving for air. This then causes the hallway and living room to be depressurized as air is pulled from the attic, cracks in the walls, back into the hallway.

In the winter, the air that is pulled from the attic is cold and this increases the heating load. Conversely, during the summer, the air that is sucked indoors is hot and humid; this increases both the sensible and latent load on the air conditioner and increases power consumption.

There are three possible ways to solve the pressurized-bedroom problem. Each bedroom needs either:

A return air grille ducted back to the furnace;

A through-the-wall transfer grille connecting the bedroom to the hallway;

A crossover duct connecting a ceiling grille in the bedroom with a ceiling grille in the hallway.

The best option is of course the more expensive one: install a return grille/duct into every conditioned room of the house. Through-the-wall transfer grilles are a cheaper solution, but they have a major drawback: noise transmission. People in the hallway can often hear what goes on in the bedroom if a through-the-wall option is used.

A third option is a crossover duct. In this approach, a ceiling grille is placed in each bedroom and then connected to a grille in the hall. While a crossover duct will transmit sound, it will not be as noticeable as a through-the-wall return air.

Before considering a crossover duct, it should be noted that there are some disadvantages to this approach. A great deal of heat loss can occur in an attic space and it would be necessary in northern climates to insulate the duct work and this approach is not recommended in the Northern hemispheres.

Wondering which option best suits your needs? Call a professional and certified contractor who can go over the options with you.
