Social Media and Job Seeking
In the employment world, social networking sites are becoming a valuable tool. Many employers are now searching Facebook and Twitter to find out more about their applicants. Now more than ever, it’s extremely important to make a good impression through social media, as the information employers are finding strongly influences their decisions.
What are employers looking at:
•Pictures- Do they display partying, alcohol, drugs or inappropriate behaviour?
•Content- Are there rude or inappropriate comments. Is this person who they claim to be? Do they complain about their previous employers?
•Interests- Do the interests of the candidate match the morals of the workplace? What you can do:
•Untag any pictures that you feel will impact your chances of getting the job.
•Strengthen your privacy settings.
•Show your volunteer experience on your profile, make this visible.
•Delete any inappropriate comments or posts, or make them visible to Friends Only.
•Stop complaining about your old boss, coworkers, teachers, etc.
You don’t have to completely change the way you use Facebook or Twitter, just be smart about who is viewing your profile and what effect this has.
