20% Of Canadians Suffer From DepressionChances are you know someone who is struggling with a mental illness because or you will personally experience a mental illness in your lifetime. Around 8% of adults will experience a major depression at some time in their lives. You want to help your loved one as best you can but it's hard when you can't see where they are hurt. Here are some things you can say and do to support someone with depression.
Validate Their Condition
When their pain and symptoms are mostly invisible people tend not to believe them. We still don't know exactly why people get depression, we know that there are imbalances with transmitters in the brain but this doesn't explain why some medications work for some people and why they don't help the next person at all. We know that their pain is real and they didn't choose it.
Do Not Tell Them To Think Positively
They have tried that already! It is like telling someone with diabetes to think positively to make their blood sugars go down. Often someone living with depression lose friends when they can't think positively. Do not shame them for being negative as this will only make them feel even more guilt; depression makes it easier to experience anger, frustration and guilt. When they experience gratitude and positivity it feels like pretending to them. You may try deflecting the conversation to nicer things in their day, if that doesn’t work focus on what you want out of the conversation, instead of making it about them. Encourage them to talk to you about their diagnosis and what they are feeling when they are ready.
Do Help Them To Adhere To Their Medications When You Can
It’s important to remind them that it takes 4-6 weeks to see any changes IF the right medication was selected. It’s a game of trial and error and they need to be reminded to take it even when it feels like it’s doing anything. Close to half of patients stop taking their antidepressants within four months without discussion with their doctor. For many medications, it’s important to taper off slowly or you can get withdrawal symptoms (even if there wasn’t a noticeable change).
Encourage Them To Keep A Journal Of Their Journey With Mental Illness
Tell them to write down how they feel, any changes in mood, when they start and stop taking medications. This can be important later as the person will most likely have to try a few different medications before they find one that works.
There are many reasons why people stop taking antidepressants and the first step is to find out why. If it’s because of side effects encourage them to see our pharmacist, many of these side effects are transient and go away once their body gets used to the medication. Also let Cheetham's Pharmacy
know if they are struggling with adherence. We can work with your loved one to educate more on their condition and how the medication works, to make the pills up into blister packs to help keep them on track and work with scheduling around other medications, work or school. If cost is an issue let our pharmacist know and we can do our best to find the lowest cost of the drug.

Glenwood Auto Service Supports Teen Challenge
Smail started with Teen Challenge 14 years ago and implemented a 12 month
strategy to turn the program around. The Teen Challenge program supports men
and women that are 18 years old and up to be able to turn their life around.
These men and women are involved in drug or alcohol abuse, prostitution or
other crimes. Teen Challenge runs a men’s and women’s program to provide these
people with a place to stay that is safe and provides them the support they
need to change the direction of their life in a positive way. They live on site
and over 50% of men and women that are part of the program stay clean and
become ambassadors for the program.
Dennis estimated that Glenwood Auto Service’s support of the program for over
the last ten years would be valued at over $150,000! This is what Dennis had to
say about Rob Scott, owner of Glenwood Auto Service:
“Rob is committed to supporting
the program, he is the first guy into the shop and last one to leave and takes
pride in his business.”
Dennis has also been a customer of Glenwood Auto for
over 15 years and he said that “Quality lives long after price is forgotten.”
He feels grateful to be able to work with Rob on the Teen Challenge program and
refer to him as a friend.
what does Glenwood Auto do to support the program?
Glenwood Auto Service gives complimentary service for the Teen Challenge 10 passenger vans and other vehicles used for the program. They also make donations through gifts in kind. Rob and the Glenwood Auto team's support has helped
the program to be able to continue to run. This allowed the Teen Challenge staff
to use funds and donations for assisting the men and women that are part of the program
as opposed to fixing vehicles. They are currently building a new women’s
facility out by Hague!

The Federal Government has made some major changes to the mortgage
requirements effective October 17th, 2016. This
drastically changes how much first time home buyers can qualify for and the
qualification process they must go through. This change has been implemented
due to the concern that household debt levels are too high in Canada. Now all
mortgage clients qualify under a new “Stress Test” environment.
These new measures are to help cool off the hot housing markets in areas
in Canada. Unfortunately first time home buyers will feel the most impact from
this change. For example, if someone qualified for a $350k mortgage prior to
the change, they now will qualify for a $280k mortgage. It will affect buyers
overall purchase power by approx. 20-25%. This is going to continue to impact
buyers over at least the next six months as buyers adjust their expectations
about what home they are able to buy. After this adjustment period the market
will pick up again just like in past years.
The other aspect is that buyers with a deposit of at least 5% but less
than 20% must be backed by mortgage insurance. This protects the lender in the
event the home buyer defaults on a high rated mortgage. This can get
complicated as it affects lenders and can impact interest rates which are then
passed down to the buyer.
These changes will also make it a lot harder for first time home buyers
to purchase a home. There has already been an increase in the amount of first
time home buyers that require their parents to co-sign on their mortgage or
need to provide support with a large down payment.
It is so important for our children to be educated at a young age so
that they are prepared for when it comes time to buy their first home.
Otherwise we will see an increase in the age that children are still living at
home, maybe even into their 30’s!! Make sure that you talk to Your Mortgage Now
about the ways that you can help you or your children when the time comes to
purchase a home.
That is why Devin and Wes from Your Mortgage Now are informed and
want to ensure as a buyer that you understand the way your mortgage approval
will work with the new changes implemented by the Federal Government.
