Cumberland Vet a Trusted Saskatoon Veterinary Expert share a Trusted Tip on pets mealtime

posted by Trusted Saskatoon    |   June 18, 2013 18:05

You love your pets! The Veterinarians, Technicians and staff at Cumberland Vet Clinic love them too, and understand how quickly they become members of your family. They also know how stressful it can be when your cherished pet may require treatment. For over 20 years, they have been committed to providing the best possible care for your animals. They are Trusted Saskatoon Vets!

Here our Vet Experts share a tip on pets mealtime:

Puppies

Feed a high quality diet designed for puppies. A wide variety of diets and formulations are available and your veterinarian should be your primary source of information as to the best choice for your puppy. The amount fed will vary with the type of food and the individual dog, but in general, should only be as much as the puppy can consume in 5 to 10 minutes at a given meal. Puppies are usually fed 3 times daily when between 6 and 12 weeks old, 2 times daily when 12 weeks to 6 months old, and may be fed 1 or 2 times daily when older than 6 months.

For certain large breeds of dogs, your veterinarian may recommend that several smaller meals be fed rather than 1 large meal (even when your dog becomes an adult) because an association has been suggested between the consumption of large meals and a serious medical condition called gastric dilatation/volvulus or "bloat."

Be careful not to overfeed. Generally, portion as much as the puppy can consume in 5 to 10 minutes at a given meal.

Kittens

Feed a high quality diet designed for kittens. Your veterinarian is your best source for information regarding an appropriate diet for your kitten. Dry foods are usually most economical and have the advantage of providing a rough surface that will help reduce plaque and tartar buildup on your kitten's teeth, but canned foods can be fed/supplemented if desired.

Amount fed will depend on the diet, as well as the age, size, and activity level of your kitten. Kittens can be fed free-choice or at set mealtimes; however, many veterinarians recommend feeding all pets at set mealtimes because intake can be more easily monitored. Canned foods should always be fed at set times, because if left unrefrigerated, they can spoil. I recommend use of stainless steel bowls because plastic and ceramic bowls can scratch, leaving crevices for bacteria to hide. The latter types of bowls (and resultant resident bacteria) have been associated with feline "acne" and skin irritation.

Dry foods are usually most economical and have the advantage of providing a rough surface that will help reduce plaque and tartar buildup on your kitten's teeth.

HYGEIA Health Market is your Trusted Saskatoon Health Store.

Here they share a tip on a GT's Kombucha drinks that they now carry in the store:

GT's Kombucha drinks are now in store! They come in 3 delicious flavours: Gingerberry, Cosmic Cranberry and Divine Grape.

What are the health benefits of Kombucha?

Kombucha Health Benefit #1 — Detoxification

Detoxification produces healthy livers and aides cancer prevention. One of kombucha’s greatest health benefits is its ability to detox the body. It is rich in many of the enzymes and bacterial acids your body produces and/or uses to detox your system, thus reducing your pancreatic load and easing the burden on your liver. Kombucha is very high in Glucaric acid, and recent studies have shown that glucaric acid helps prevent cancer. I know 2 people in my immediate circle of friends who have had cancer (pancreatic and breast) and fought it into remission without any chemo or radiation therapy. Instead, they warded it off by detoxing their lives (going 100% organic, removing chemical cleaners and agents in their home, changing their diet to be at least 80% raw or fermented, etc.) Central to the detoxification process was drinking Kombucha regularly. Even Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the recently deceased Russian author and nobel-prize winner, in his autobiography, claimed that kombucha tea cured his stomach cancer during his internment in soviet labor camps. (And because of this testimony, President Reagan used Kombucha to halt the spread of his cancer in 1987. You’ll note he didn’t die until 2004, and that was from old age, NOT cancer.)

Kombucha Health Benefit #2 — Joint Care

Kombucha contains glucosamines, a strong preventive and treatment all forms of arthritis. Glucosamines increase synovial hyaluronic acid production. Hyaluronic acid functions physiologically to aid preservation of cartilage structure and prevent arthritic pain, with relief comparable to NSAIDs and advantage over glucocorticoids. Hyaluronic acid enables connective tissue to bind moisture thousands of times its weight and maintains tissue structure, moisture, lubrication and flexibility and lessens free radical damage, while associated collagen retards and reduces wrinkles.

Kombucha Health Benefit #3 — Aids Digestion and Gut Health

Because it’s naturally fermented with a living colony of bacteria and yeast, Kombucha is a probiotic beverage. This has a myriad of benefits such as improved digestion, fighting candida (harmful yeast) overgrowth, mental clarity, and mood stability. As such, it’s noted for reducing or eliminating the symptoms of fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, etc.

Kombucha Health Benefit #4 — Immune Boosting

Kombucha is extraordinarily anti-oxidant rich, and you all know the benefits of anti-oxidants for boosting your immune system and energy levels.

Seeking to preserve and update the house they commissioned from Richard Barancik in 1953, Chicagoans Howard and Doris Conant hired Margaret McCurry, of Tigerman McCurry Architects. “It was an ’80s building needing a rehab,” says journalist Dena Kaye, who, along with her partner, designer Dick Fallin, updated a house on St. Bart’s in the French West Indies. While retaining the basic footprint, the pair modernized their residence and opened it to the views. For the renovation of a 3,800-square-foot Florida condominium, Sally Sirken Lewis said, “Let’s keep it really light, like the environment, with its cool, sandy beaches. “The apartment had a poky kitchen,” says designer Sandra Nunnerley. “The new one was carved, in part, out of the butler’s pantry. It’s a traditional white-paneled space, very simple but thoroughly done,” she adds. The range, hood and oven are from Viking. Microwave,GE. (February 2004)

Architect John B. Murray and interior designer Elissa Cullman joined two apartments in a 1914 Manhattan building to make a generously proportioned duplex. In California’s Carmel Valley, Sally Sirkin Lewis and her associate Kenn Shlaes renovated a house for Ed and Ruth Morrow. Inset: The original kitchen. “It was dismal and old-fashioned,” says Lewis. Above: The cabinets and granite-topped counter they designed “are sleek and sophisticated,” she notes. At rear hangs Richard Serra’s Billie Holiday, 1999. The refrigerator is from Sub-Zero. Wolf ovens. (February 2005)

Culligan are your Trusted Saskatoon Water Experts!

Here they share their first Trusted tip on the dangers of well water contamination:

It’s never a bad time to think about your well water. In fact, if you’re the owner of a private well, be mindful. The Canadian Ministry of Health tells us that keeping drinking water safe is an ongoing responsibility.

Make sure you regularly check your well for contamination. Well water can be susceptible to some pretty unfriendly contaminants. Arsenic. Fertilizer. Pesticides. Nitrates. Trust us, it’s nothing you want to drink. So call your local Culligan Man for a water test.

That danger of well water contamination is reiterated on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website: “Unlike public drinking water systems serving many people, [private wells] do not have experts regularly checking the water’s source and its quality before it is sent to the tap. These households must take special precautions to ensure the protection and maintenance of their drinking water supplies.

Check out some facts about your drinking water, well water owners:

  • Bacterial contamination may provide the greatest threat to private well users.
  • Ultraviolet sterilizers and chlorine treatments are examples of proven techniques used to fight contaminants such as E. coli.
  • Nitrates are a very common issue, and should be tested for regularly.
  • With no taste or smell, nitrates can have adverse health effects if unchecked in your water. Infants, for example, cannot safely absorb nitrates because their stomach acid is not strong enough to convert it.

Are you ready to test your well water yet? Invest in a test! Your local Culligan Man can help.

Your Mortgage Link your Trusted Saskatoon Mortgage Brokers share a mortgage tip on upsizing

posted by Trusted Saskatoon    |   June 11, 2013 13:48

Buying a home is one of the most important and exciting steps in your life.... now that pesky financing! Deal with people who can offer you and your family the best options for you with Your Mortgage Now! Devin Cristo and Wes Will are your Saskatoon Mortgage Experts and they have years of experience helping individuals and families finance their dreams by offering mortgages from a variety of lenders for people from all walks of life.

They are your Trusted Saskatoon Mortgage Experts!

Here they share a tip on The Costs of Upsizing:

Very few people stay in their starter home forever. Most of the time - whether it's because of a growing family or a growing income that allows you to purchase something better - homeowners opt to move to a larger abode.

If you're finding yourself in this situation, keep in mind that with a larger home comes larger costs. Below are just a few things to consider when you're dertermining how much more house you can afford:

1. Mortgage

Unless you're moving to a significantly less expensive area, chances are you're going to require a larger mortgage as your home's square footage increases. You can opt for a higher amortization to keep your monthly payments low (think 25 years), but this will also increase the amount of mortgage-paying years you have left.

2. Regular Maintenance (lawns, cleaning, snow removal)

This will be a particular shock if you're moving from a condo to a house. Lawns, gardens, snowy driveways - these all need to be maintained. Also, the bigger the house, the more you're going to have to clean (if you're into that sort of thing). Whether you hire people to perform these tasks or you opt to do them yourself, you're either looking at more money or more time spent on them.

3. Property taxes

Again, unless you're moving to an area that has lower taxes, chances are you're going to be paying more for a larger home. Find out from your Realtor roughly what the taxes are in your ideal neighbourhoods, and factor this into your budgeting before you start looking.

4. Utilities

Bigger house means more rooms to heat - and cool. You may also have to pay for water, sewage and other costs such as water heater rentals.

5. Emergencies

If you're already living in a house, this likely won't be an issue because you're used to the threat of unforeseen maintenance issues. If you're moving from a condo, however, it's important to note that you're no longer paying maintenance fees for a reason. If something goes wrong, you have to foot the bill yourself. Make sure you have a reserve fund ready.

6. Home insurance

With a bigger home comes a bigger home insurance payment. 'Nuf said!

Depending on where you're moving to, some of these costs might be offset. Particularly if you're moving closer to work - which will likely lead to lower gas bills and car insurance. If your new home is newer, and more energy efficient, you may not notice a huge difference in utility bills. And if you're moving out of a larger city, your cost of living might decrease all around. Make sure you figure out roughly how much new house you can afford before you start looking. There's nothing worse than finding your dream home only to realize it's going to make you house poor.

posted by Trusted Saskatoon    |   June 10, 2013 19:08

Weight No More is a Trusted Saskatoon weight loss expert!

Debra shares her thoughts on the Gastric Sleeve:

The EASY WAY OUT?

There is not a day goes by that I am not greatful for my sleeve…I am so greatful to have this tool to help me in my life. It has been an amazing journey with the ups and downs….many people have said to me so you took the EASY WAY OUT….

EASY WAY OUT….let’s just think about that for a minute…there has been nothing easy about this whole journey...

FIRST of all anyone who has suffered from obesity knows the ridicule they have taken, how ashamed they have felt, how low their self esteem was, how they hid behind others in pictures, how they tried to lose themselves in crowds hoping no one would see them, how they avoided family gatherings , how they avoided family photos and how they just didn’t want to participate in the fun things in lives. How they couldn’t walk a block and just wanted to be normal…now was that EASY?

SECOND how they knew their health was out of control and the fear of thinking they would have a heart attack, a stroke, have diabetes and many other obesity related diseases. Was it easy living like this from day to day? The depression it brought on, was this EASY to live with?

THIRD being ashamed that you resorted to weight loss surgery to assist you with your obesity thinking you took the EASY WAY OUT…has it been an easy journey…NO I DON’T THINK SO…it has be a challenge your whole life. I commend you all for taking charge of your LIVES and becoming healthy to SHARE your lives with your family for many years to come, being able to do the things that you enjoy.

We must remember the SLEEVE is just an extra tool in our weight loss journey…a very powerful tool but a tool nonetheless. It can be sabatoged as well…it is harder to sabatoge than a regular diet but it can be sabatoged. If we continue to fill up with non- nutritious foods, eat high fat, high carbs and sugar yes we can even sabatoge the sleeve…so is this the EASY WAY OUT?

Connect with Debra today..she wants to help.

Cumberland Vet Clinic a Trusted Saskatoon Veterinary Expert share a Trusted Tip on Obedience Training

posted by Trusted Saskatoon    |   June 6, 2013 07:03

You love your pets! The Veterinarians, Technicians and staff at Cumberland Vet Clinic love them too, and understand how quickly they become members of your family. They also know how stressful it can be when your cherished pet may require treatment. For over 20 years, they have been committed to providing the best possible care for your animals.

Here our Vet Experts share a tip on Obedience Training:

Obedience Training

A MUST for every good family dog, regardless of size or breed! Puppies may start classes when they are as young as 8 weeks old. Obedience training is fun. It helps prevent negative encounters between family members and the dog. It reinforces the bond between the handler(s) and pet. Consult veterinarians, breeders, local training clubs, YMCAs, recreation centers, and newspaper columns on dogs or pets for details about classes, costs, and requirements.

Obedience training helps prevent negative encounters between family members and the dog. It reinforces the bond between the handler(s) and pet.

Housebreaking

Begin as soon as the puppy arrives in your home. Young puppies should be taken out immediately upon waking and just before retiring, as well as multiple times during the day. Most puppies cannot "hold it" for long periods so it will be necessary to take the puppy out almost every hour at first (especially after periods of play, naps, and mealtimes), and then gradually increase the amount of time between visits to the "bathroom." Take the puppy to the same area each time and praise it immediately and enthusiastically when it eliminates. Do not play with, or talk to, the puppy until after it has eliminated. Remember, if the puppy doesn't eliminate outside, its urine and feces are being saved for deposit inside your house!

Litter Box Training

A kitten will housebreak itself. Provide it with a clean litter box and make sure the kitten knows where it is located. Edges of boxes should not be too deep for a kitten to navigate and the box should be kept scrupulously clean. A good rule of thumb is that there should be one more litter boxes in the house than the number of cats residing there, and the boxes should be kept in different locations affording some privacy. Choice of litter (eg, clay, sand, recyclable paper) is up to the kitten owner, although some cats appear to have substrate preferences. Many veterinarians recommend staying away from litters with deodorant and baking soda additives as they can irritate your cat's respiratory tract. If your kitten (or cat) isn't using the litter box reliably, it could be because of dirty litter, illness, litter preference, or psychological stress.
