KTS Custom Cabinets spread some festive cheer to a Saskatoon family in need!

The Trusted team is not alone in loving a touching story ...so we would like to share a story that is very heart warming and very poignant at anytime of the year , but especially at Christmas time!

Kevin Samms and the KTS Custom Cabinets team recently found themselves with quite a few extra kitchen cabinets from a job where the customer had ordered too many. They were considering selling them on kijiji when they recieved an email from a woman whose neighbours house had burnt down.

The woman explained that the family unfortunately didn't have insurance, and they lost everything! Their neighbours were busy trying to put money together to try to help them rebuild.

After speaking with them at length on the phone the KTS team decided to donate a new kitchen to the family. They called around to their suppliers, who offered to help out after hearing the sad story and they were able to get all the cabinet doors donated as well as countertops!

KTS Custom cabinets will be building them custom cabinets to fit their new home!

Kevin from KTS said " Its just one of those stories that touched me... i think local companies should try to follow their heart and try to help if they can in situations like this...we try to do what we can all year not only at christmas. I can't imagine if that were my family"

WOW KTS! What a wonderful story - we are proud to be partnered with and to support KTS . Thumbs up from the Trusted Saskatoon.com team!

Tips on the Positioning of Kitchen Cabinets

With the wide array of modern kitchen cabinet designs, homeowners can easily choose models that complement and enhance their lifestyles. Picking out the style and color of your kitchen cabinets is easy. But it can be a little more difficult to decide the best way to arrange your cabinets. When positioning kitchen cabinets, it's best to balance functional workspace while keeping an eye on design. In addition to traditional kitchen cabinets, specialty items, such as wine racks, foldout pantry cabinets and slide-out drawers, allow homeowners to combine good looks with functionality. Here are a few home improvement tips to consider when laying out your kitchen design and cabinet positions.

Positioning Kitchen Cabinets:

Envision a work triangle. You may be using your kitchen design to decide where cabinets should go, but you may also want to consider how people will be moving throughout the kitchen. When positioning kitchen cabinets, keep in mind the distance between different appliances and elements used in food preparation. You want your kitchen remodeling to improve function. Map out a "work triangle" formed by lines connecting the sink, the range and the refrigerator. To minimize excess walking, this triangle should be as small as possible while still being practical. Kitchen-cabinet positioning should accommodate and enhance the work triangle. For example, placing a lower cabinet next to the open-door side of the refrigerator will make it simple to take food items out of the fridge and set them on the counter. Separating the three elements of the work triangle by lower cabinets also allows the cook to remove hot items from the stove and place them on the countertop, and provides counter access near the sink for dirty dishes. In addition, an upper cabinet set above the dishwasher simplifies the task of putting away clean dishes.

Consider standard kitchen cabinet sizes.

Standard cabinet size is a factor when determining how to arrange your kitchen cabinets. The standard height of a base cabinet is 34.5 inches. After allowing approximately 0.5 inches for the thickness of a countertop, the finished counter height is approximately 35 inches. Lower base-cabinets are typically 24 inches deep. When positioning base cabinets, consider the remaining walking space in front of each unit. Leaving at least 4 feet of open floor space in front of cabinet doors, drawers and the stove will give the cook room to move with ease. Upper kitchen cabinets are only 12 inches deep, and they vary in height from 30 inches to as small as 12 inches to accommodate placement over a range or microwave. Both upper and lower kitchen cabinets offer large corner units, sometimes with installed "Lazy Susan" rotating shelves, to lessen the need to reach into far corners of the cabinets.

Focus on kitchen design.

While function is important, you want your kitchen to look stylish as well. Utilize symmetrical appeal by positioning upper cabinets of similar size on either side of your sink and range, if space permits. Place a tall, pantry-type cabinet next to the refrigerator to camouflage the side closest to your living area. Consider installing a base cabinet or an island cabinet with an attached eating bar on the backside to provide an attractive eating space without taking up lots of floor space in a small kitchen.

KTS CUSTOM CABINETS a TRUSTED SASKATOON KITCHEN EXPERT provides a Trusted tip on CABINET RE-FACING

posted by Trusted Saskatoon    |   May 16, 2012 09:46

Kevin at KTS Custom cabinets will work with you to create your dream kitchen...within your budget....and the process will be smooth and painless. If you are looking for a show stopping custom kitchen that combines excellent workmanship at a really good price then KTS is the perfect choice for you ...but if your budget is limited and your kitchen layout works for you, they will trasform your tired old cabinets into a place you won't recognize in as little as a few days! KTS Custom Cabinets are your Trusted SASKATOON KITCHEN EXPERTS!

Here they share their first Trusted Tip on Re-facing myths!

Thinking about refacing?.....A wise choice!

A lot of cabinet companies will tell you that it is not cost effective to reface existing cabinets, when in reality, it is quite the opposite. With refacing, you save an average of 35-40% of the cost of new cabinets. Cabinet companies who offer the option of refacing are honest with the fact that the bulk of the pricing is for new doors, which in turn, is the bulk of the pricing for newcabinets as well.

Deciding to refresh your kitchen does not necessarily mean that it is time to replace your whole kitchen. If your cabinets are in great shape and solid, you should be offered the option of refacing as opposed to replacing. While there have been advances in kitchen design and function, a lot of those ideas can be incorporated into your existing cabinets or minor changes can be made in order to accomplish this. As well, refacing offers the options to add items such as and island or a pantry which eliminates the item looking like an afterthought.

There are many benefits to a homeowner who decides to reface including: - No additional flooring - No additional countertops - No extra plumbing or electrical costs All of these extras may be incurred with a full renovation, not to mention lengthening the timelines for your renovation itself. You still have the flexibility to add further renovations at a later date – making it much easier to budget for.

Don’t let cabinet companies spend your hard earned money without weighing all the options. Trust a company who will give you their honest opinion as to whether or not refacing your cabinets is in your best interest. Any reputable company will let you know if the cabinets are in bad shape, or if your layout is changing too much for it to be worth refacing. Invest your money wisely, and look at all your options before making a decision.

Neils Thor asked "What home improvement products are the best value for the price paid?

Several Experts gave Neils a Tip or two..we share them all with you here

HI Neils Thor I’ve always maintained a spruce up of kitchen cabinets (either with a coat of paint or stain, or new hardware – or both) does wonders for an aged home. New paint on walls is also a very inexpensive means of sprucing up a room. ... Accessories – vases, pictures, toss cushions. There are many ways to spruce up a home for very little money. From our experience, with both home owners and real estate agents, the condition of the kitchen and bathrooms is key. The bedrooms can be a good size, the carpet in good condition, the shingles look solid etc but if the kitchen and bathrooms look “tired” it might be an instant turn off should you decide to sell your home down the road. Granite counter tops are an instant visible upgrade and any money spent in these two areas will certainly be recouped down the road. Hope this is of some help. Best of the season to all! Kevin from KTS Kitchens a Trusted Saskatoon Kitchen Expert

Paint, paint, paint. This is the least expensive, and most impact that you can get. Painting a room (or rooms) brightens & refreshes, and alters the "feel" of the entire home. Don't be afraid of color, and remember, contrast is what creates the "WOW" factor. Next - into the heart of the home....reasonably inexpensive changes ...that can be made in your kitchen that will impact the entire "feel" of the home...update your cabinetry handles and add properly positioned lighting above and/or below the upper cabinets. Adding crown and under cabinet mouldings puts a "finished" detail on every kitchen. Lastly, reface your entire kitchen. Nothing dates a home more quickly that old styled or worn cabinetry, bringing down the value of your entire home! Move your home from 1980 (or older) into this decade by updating the style of doors & drawers, changing color, and changing the function of your cabinetry ( altering drawer/door base cabinets to pots and pans drawers). Note: we spend more money on our vehicles, drive them for only a few years, and they depreciate. Your kitchen is the one room in your home that acts as an investment. Leanne Falkowsky a Trusted Saskatoon Painter

Good morning Neils. I get asked this question many times. The best value on a renovation is money spent on the kitchen and bathroom areas. As long as the renovation you want is not a high end reno where the cost overtakes the purpose of what the client wants. These 2 areas can the most expensive rooms in the home to renovate based on the products chosen and they can also be the most rewarding when the project is finished. The next area for improvement would be anything for energy efficiency to the home. With new windows, doors, exterior insulation and maintenance free products on the exterior it will give you a comfortable home with energy savings. When you look at the costs of doing an exterior renovation you have to also look at the resale value of the home. In most cases on any renovation you want to increase the comfort level to your home, they are designed to suit the needs of the individual and as there are different government grants available for energy efficiency. This also gives the home a different appeal and with the changes in products constantly you can give your home the wow factor instantly when looking from the street. The last area I would look at for renovations is the cosmetics of the interior of the home. For resale a quick paint job and some mid range flooring is a sound investment but in most cases the cosmetics are based on the individuals taste. These areas are short term as they can be changed easily. I believe that this is one area that will increase the cost of the home but not a great amount. When we design renovations we design to suit the needs of the individual. We discuss many areas of the renovations as well as budgets. If you were looking at a major renovation to a home we always have discussions as to whether you would increase the value, increase your comfort, or improve the home structurally. Each renovation you would look at for your home should be suited to your needs first! Dave Anderchek, President J.A.B.A. Construction Limited a Trusted local Contractor/ Renovation & Design

Great question Neils. Of course all renovations are good, but the renovations that will definately add value to your home are both bathroom and kitchen renos. From the perspective of selling your home bathroom and kitchen renos will help you sell your home in the shortest time possible for the highest possible selling price. The following information is from the Remax web site on tips for selling your home. “Remax knows that making your bathroom the best it can be will generate a 56% better return on investment than the average renovation”.
