TrustedSaskatoon.com Talk to the ExpertsTrusted Renovation & Style show Questions for Lori - Kitchen and Bath Classics:

Leanne Rollheiser: We are going to be redoing our bathroom on main floor. Is there a benefit to use the waterproof drywall for the entire bathroom ? There are five of us so many showers and baths. We do have a fan and a window. Just wondering for moisture.

A: As we do not sell drywall, only the plumbing fixtures, I would suggest contacting our Trusted Partner, Jabba construction with this question, as they would probably be more familiar with the product and be able to answer your question.

Your fan may need an upgrade, if it is sized too small for the bathroom, we do have bathroom fans available, that are quiet and powerful to help remove moisture in the bathroom. Come visit our showroom, and just bring in your width and length of your bathroom and we can assist in sizing a new fan for you, if you do have an older fan.

Miranda Young: How much water can you actually save with new water sense fixtures?

A: The Water Sense labelled plumbing fixures are part of a program in the US designed to encourage a reduction in water use. For plumbing fixtures the model must perform with 20% less water than average products in that category.

For example an older model toilet could be flushing as much as 13-22L per flush and a Water Sense tested model would be at only 4.9L. Switching your toilet out would save about $90 per year on your water bill, depending on how much you are flushing now. Switching out a shower head with a higher flow 2.5gallons/min or more, and reducing it down to one that is only 2 gallons per minute will reduce your hot water bill for electricity by a couple hundred KW and this will be noted on your electrical bill as a savings throughout the year. We have many models of toilets and shower heads and also some lav and kitchen faucets that are made to reduce water usage and we can help you pick out designs that fit your home at Kitchen and Bath Classics.

Darlene King: Is it an easy fix to increase the water pressure so you are able to run two showers at the same time?

A: Water pressure is somewhat unique to each home, although in the city most homes are similar. On an acreage or some in some smaller towns you may have lower water pressure. I would suggest discussing with your plumber the option of a booster pump, these pumps are installed on homes with low water pressure, say off a well, and allow you to “boost” the pressure into the home, so that you have enough water flowing to where you need it. This may or may not be possible in your home, but a plumber would be able to advise.

If you are thinking of running two showers in one bathroom, chances are your existing line throughout your home is probably only ½” and this does not allow for two shower heads to run in one shower, you have to increase your plumbing line from the source to ¾” up to that shower and then you can do multifunction from there with a higher volume valve.

I suggest coming in and meeting with one of our experts and we can see what we can find for options for your home.

Marylee Zimmer: would like a walk in shower or walk in tub in our bathroom. Do you have any suggestions?

A: We have lots of options for sizes of walk in showers, with many shapes and sizes also, wheelchair accessible bases, and a line of walk in tubs that are designed for renovating or new construction. Please come into our showroom and meet with one of our knowledgeable staff and we can show you what will fit into your space.

Caleigh Kimber: I have an extremely small basement bathroom, I am looking for suggestions to make it look as spacious as possible while still maintaining functionality. Any suggestions?

A: Depending on space and layout there are different ways to give the visualization of more room. With a standard tub and shower layout, you could use a curved shower rod, to maximize the space inside the tub for showering, and leave open when not using to expand the visual space. If you have a standup shower, keeping the door clear glass allows the eye to see more space within the room. A corner shower allows for lots of glass and opens up the space. A round front toilet is compact and leaves several extra inches for manoeuvring room. There are sinktops available where the sink and countertop are all in one, so this frees up countertop space as there is no sink ledge. There are also great shelving ideas like you would see in a hotel, to combine a towel bar and shelving all in one, that is compact and stylish. We have lot’s of these options on display in our showroom, so we invite you down to check it out and meet with one of our consultants and they will assist you in finding what fits in your space.

Elizabeth Dahl: I'm doing my upstairs bathroom, but there is no space, grrrr... Anyway, is there sinks like this for small areas?

A: There are sinktops available that combine the sink and countertop all in one, this gives you more counter space as there is no sink ledge. There are also pedestal sinks that are compact, and would take up less space than a larger vanity. If you do a pedestal, then we can make sure you have shelving and storage options for towels, bath products ect. We do have some compact vanities available that are only 24” wide and still allow you to store items inside. We do have some of these options on display in the showroom and we invite you to come down and meet with one of our consultants who will help you design a bathroom that fits your needs and the space.

Julia Herperger: Energy-efficient, green, appliances are the way to go, but how do I know which ones are really energy efficent, and meet all the standards for being energy-efficient?

A: As we do not sell appliances, I will have to answer this question with how it applies to plumbing fixtures. There are many options within plumbing fixtures to save water, whether it is your toilets, kitchen faucets or your shower heads. There are specific liters or gallons indicated on our specification info for each product, so we can help you choose products that meet the lower consumption of water, and this in turn will save you money through out the year after you switch out a higher consumption product, like say a toilet that uses 13L or more water and switch to one that only uses 6L or less. We have many in our showroom so come down and take a look and we can help you find ways to use less water.

Our Trusted partner, Saskatoon Appliance would be able to answer your questions about energy efficient appliances.

Becky Panter Myers: I live in a small house with a horrid kitchen, what is the best way to maximize my cupboards without chucking abunch of things?

A: We do not actually sell kitchen cabinets or accessories to go inside them to reorganize them, I would check with our Trusted Partners Saskatoon Woodworks or KTS Custom cabinets for ideas.

If you do require any plumbing fixtures for you kitchen, such as a new sink or faucet, come and check out our showroom and knowledgeable staff.

Dawn Starblanket: What are the costs ranging from for backsplash. I would like to put in some (preferabbly drk grn) backsplash in my kitchen?

A: We do not sell countertops or backspashes, just plumbing fixtures. I would direct you to our trusted partner Saskatoon Woodworks or KTS Cabinets and they may be able to advise you on replacing the backsplash.

If you do decide to replace your sink or kitchen faucet, come and check out our showroom.

Kitchen and Bath Classics showroom manager Lori shares her latest tip!

To Bidet or not Bidet?

What is a bidet?A question many North Americans struggle to answer. A bidet is a plumbing fixture that cleanses the user after he/she has used the toilet. This idea was first introduced by the French in the late 1700′s and has become wildly popular throughout Europe and Japan. Today a bidet and or washlet is found in more than 70% of homes in Japan and Europe, and only 20% of homes in North America. The newest form of bidet is the bidet seat (Washlet from Toto www.totousa.com ); this unit takes the place of your standard toilet seat and requires a 120VAC, 15A, 60Hz Class A GFCI outlet. With this more convenient application this unit saves room in the bathroom as opposed to the standard bidet sytle which was a separate fixture beside the toilet.

Some of the features associated with this S400 Washlet from Toto are:

•Auto Flush Activated by Sensors or the Simple Touch of a Button

•Automatic Open / Close Lid Activated by Sensors, or the Simple Touch of a Button on the Remote Control

•Gentle Aerated Warm Water

•Front and Rear Washing

•Massage Feature

•Warm Air Drying with Variable Three-Temperature Setting

•Automatic Air Purifier

•Heated Seat with Temperature Control

•Convenient Wireless Remote Control with Large LCD Panel With the increased cleanliness and therapeutic effect of water (e.g. great for rashes, hemorrhoids, constipation, pregnancy, menstrual and just everyday cleaning) the bidet almost eliminates the use of toilet paper for greener living.

Designing your Shower Experience

When starting to plan a renovation or new home construction there are a lot of factors that come into play. Designing a shower is one of them. First, Plan whether you are completely changing the layout or just changing out the fixtures, know the size and layout of your shower and the capacity of your drains and water heater- this will help in determining where an how many shower heads you are able to go with. Consider heights, if this is to be a multi user shower keep in mind the heights of the users when planning body sprays and number of volume controls (you may want to consider having the top body spray on a separate volume control for smaller users and maybe a hand shower on a slide bar) Style and options, from contemporary to modern to traditional to anything in between, many manufacturers now offer a vast selection in their shower experience with rain heads, hand showers, and body sprays/jets. Make an appointment with one of our knowledgeable sales consultants today and let them guide you in your shower design process.

KITCHEN & BATH CLASSICS a SASKATOON BATHROOM Expert Share a Trusted Tip when choosing toilets..on the SASKATOON DIRECTORY

Whether you are building a new home or remodelling a single room, Kitchen & Bath Classics SASKATOON a Trusted SASKATOON BATHROOM EXPERT offer you one of the largest selections of plumbing fixtures, faucets, and accessories from quality names, displaying the latest trends and cutting-edge styles. The showroom consultants offer the best expertise in the business as they understand the building process; working with you to ensure that your project stays within budget and that the right products are delivered on time.

Lori Nadrowski the Saskatoon Showroom manager shares her First Trusted Tip..a NEWS FLUSH no less!!

MYTH – Low Flow Toilets don’t Work!

When working in the showroom it was always surprising how many times in a day the advantages and disadvantages of toilets were discussed. Most would think that clients would spend more time in choosing a new kitchen faucet (as it tends to be usually the focal point in many homes) as opposed to making sure they received the best toilet out there. But after you think about it, what is used more in the home and what do you want to make sure will always continue to work — especially during a dinner party? it’s your toilet! So here is the 101 on choosing your toilet. In order to get a great flushing toilet you do have to spend more than the standard $200 on a gravity flush toilet. As all toilets now are low flow, they have went from 13litre to 6litre to now the new 4.8litre, don’t get discouraged – with all the technology out there the 4.8litres do work and no you do not have to flush twice. A couple things to look for is a larger flap valve (standard is 2″) – this is allowing more water to enter the bowl at once giving it a more forceful flush and a larger fully glazed siphon trapway (standard is 1″) to make sure everything is exiting properly. A great resource in deciding on your toilet is the map-testing website http://www.map-testing.com/index.html  this gives you a complete breakdown between manufacture and toilet and the flushing capacity for bulk removal. What you want to look for, for the best flush, is between 800g – 1000g for bulk removal. Then from there it comes to style, toilets have come a long way, you can get ADA (comfort height toilets), fully concealed trapway toilets (easier to clean), and of course the must have the easy close seat – no more slamming!

Neils Thor asked "What home improvement products are the best value for the price paid?

Several Experts gave Neils a Tip or two..we share them all with you here

HI Neils Thor I’ve always maintained a spruce up of kitchen cabinets (either with a coat of paint or stain, or new hardware – or both) does wonders for an aged home. New paint on walls is also a very inexpensive means of sprucing up a room. ... Accessories – vases, pictures, toss cushions. There are many ways to spruce up a home for very little money. From our experience, with both home owners and real estate agents, the condition of the kitchen and bathrooms is key. The bedrooms can be a good size, the carpet in good condition, the shingles look solid etc but if the kitchen and bathrooms look “tired” it might be an instant turn off should you decide to sell your home down the road. Granite counter tops are an instant visible upgrade and any money spent in these two areas will certainly be recouped down the road. Hope this is of some help. Best of the season to all! Kevin from KTS Kitchens a Trusted Saskatoon Kitchen Expert

Paint, paint, paint. This is the least expensive, and most impact that you can get. Painting a room (or rooms) brightens & refreshes, and alters the "feel" of the entire home. Don't be afraid of color, and remember, contrast is what creates the "WOW" factor. Next - into the heart of the home....reasonably inexpensive changes ...that can be made in your kitchen that will impact the entire "feel" of the home...update your cabinetry handles and add properly positioned lighting above and/or below the upper cabinets. Adding crown and under cabinet mouldings puts a "finished" detail on every kitchen. Lastly, reface your entire kitchen. Nothing dates a home more quickly that old styled or worn cabinetry, bringing down the value of your entire home! Move your home from 1980 (or older) into this decade by updating the style of doors & drawers, changing color, and changing the function of your cabinetry ( altering drawer/door base cabinets to pots and pans drawers). Note: we spend more money on our vehicles, drive them for only a few years, and they depreciate. Your kitchen is the one room in your home that acts as an investment. Leanne Falkowsky a Trusted Saskatoon Painter

Good morning Neils. I get asked this question many times. The best value on a renovation is money spent on the kitchen and bathroom areas. As long as the renovation you want is not a high end reno where the cost overtakes the purpose of what the client wants. These 2 areas can the most expensive rooms in the home to renovate based on the products chosen and they can also be the most rewarding when the project is finished. The next area for improvement would be anything for energy efficiency to the home. With new windows, doors, exterior insulation and maintenance free products on the exterior it will give you a comfortable home with energy savings. When you look at the costs of doing an exterior renovation you have to also look at the resale value of the home. In most cases on any renovation you want to increase the comfort level to your home, they are designed to suit the needs of the individual and as there are different government grants available for energy efficiency. This also gives the home a different appeal and with the changes in products constantly you can give your home the wow factor instantly when looking from the street. The last area I would look at for renovations is the cosmetics of the interior of the home. For resale a quick paint job and some mid range flooring is a sound investment but in most cases the cosmetics are based on the individuals taste. These areas are short term as they can be changed easily. I believe that this is one area that will increase the cost of the home but not a great amount. When we design renovations we design to suit the needs of the individual. We discuss many areas of the renovations as well as budgets. If you were looking at a major renovation to a home we always have discussions as to whether you would increase the value, increase your comfort, or improve the home structurally. Each renovation you would look at for your home should be suited to your needs first! Dave Anderchek, President J.A.B.A. Construction Limited a Trusted local Contractor/ Renovation & Design

Great question Neils. Of course all renovations are good, but the renovations that will definately add value to your home are both bathroom and kitchen renos. From the perspective of selling your home bathroom and kitchen renos will help you sell your home in the shortest time possible for the highest possible selling price. The following information is from the Remax web site on tips for selling your home. “Remax knows that making your bathroom the best it can be will generate a 56% better return on investment than the average renovation”.
