Dave Wiebe - Head Technician Has Over 35 Years Of Experience!

Dave Wiebe has been recognized in many ways over his career but being named ACDelco 2003 Technician of the Millennium was definitely a highlight!

“The Technician of the Millennium III finals were a much bigger deal than I envisioned they would be when I entered the competition last fall, and the title is also a big deal,” Wiebe said. “I had a feeling of satisfaction I never dreamed of because I have wanted to be a technician since I was a kid, and feel I have become so much more.”

Scott Mackie, ACDelco general director, said the purpose of the Technician of the Millennium competition is to recognize and support the professionalism and expertise of ACDelco technicians. “The competition is a testimonial to the high calibre of technicians employed by Independent Service Centers that are enrolled in our Total Service Support Program,” Mackie said. “David Wiebe did a great job on Friday, and all eight contestants should be congratulated for making it this far. Each technician demonstrated an amazing ability to stay focused on the tasks at hand.”

All technicians were provided with identical tools, parts, computers and diagnostic equipment, which they used to diagnose and repair actual vehicles in a timed, hands-on skills demonstration.

The Millennium competition winner, Dave Wiebe, Crestview Auto Service was presented with a new Chevrolet Silverado SS truck. Wiebe beat out five United States finalists and two other Canadian finalists in what each contestant referred to as an incredibly challenging final competition. Dave is actually not a truck lover so soon after he was back in Saskatoon he sold his truck and purchased a car.

Dave loves his career and working on Crestview Auto Service's client's vehicles! Stop by our shop and say hi to Dave!

Here Speedy Collision shares a tip on Good Practises for Today's Drivers:

Driving is a daily task for most of us, and staying safe on the road is important. Your car is also likely one of your largest investments, so taking care of it should just be common sense.

However, when you spend so much time in your car, it can be easy to overlook even the most basic safety and maintenance issues. These are great habits to get into so that your car will serve you well for years to come, and yet overlooking these simple tasks are some of the most common mistakes drivers make.

Check Your Oil Frequently

Everybody who drives knows that cars need an oil change from time to time. However, many drivers really neglect this fact. They know what needs to be done, but they don't do it. Why?

While you might read that motor oil needs to be changed every 5,000 miles or so, the truth is that the only way to know how often you should be changing your oil is to follow the intervals recommended in the owner’s manual that came with your vehicle - and use the dipstick to see if the oil's color has darkened. Every car is different, but that's why owner's manuals exist.

Not changing your car’s oil frequently enough can harm your. If you have a leak, just topping it up will work for a while, but you should really get it fixed if you want your car to work for any length of time. Engine repairs are among the most costly, so changing your oil on time just makes sense for your pocketbook. You can even keep an eye out for coupons to save money on car maintenance.

Replace Your Air Filter

Most people simply don’t think about the air filter in their cars unless they’re very interested in how a car works. In fact, some people don’t even realize that their car needs a filter. It does, and if your air filter is dirty and needs replacing, your car won’t perform at its best.

Over time, running your car with a dirty air filter can cause the engine to overheat, damaging other parts of your car and keeping it from running efficiently. The worst part is that replacing your air filter is an inexpensive repair, usually below $40, so having a dirty one damage your car for expensive repairs doesn't make sense at all.

Don’t Drive With Worn-Down Brake Pads

Brake pads don’t really break, but they can easily become worn down over a period of time, making it more and more difficult to stop your vehicle. Eventually, that quick stop that keeps you from going past that red light or bumping into a car ahead of you just won’t be possible.

While there really is no ideal amount of time you need to wait between changing brake pads, many mechanics and car manufacturers recommend somewhere in the 20,000- to 25,000-mile range. The best time to have your brake pads checked is when you’re having your tires rotated or replaced since they will be exposed and easily accessible. If the pads need replacing, do it on the spot if you can afford it to avoid any unnecessary risk.

There’s also a few warning signs of worn-down breaks to look for between checkups. You should head to a mechanic if you start hearing squealing when breaking, or if it starts taking longer than usual to break.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road

Beyond maintenance, you should practice good habits while on the road as well. For a lot of people, the biggest driving distraction is using a smartphone to send text messages or make voice calls. There's also applying make-up, changing the radio or iPod playlist, and eating and drinking food. Regardless of what your distraction is, stop it.

You might think you’re saving time, but doing too much while your eyes should be focused on the road can lead to catastrophe.

If you absolutely have to multitask on the road and make calls, you should consider investing in a vehicle with hands-free technology that allows you to dial, talk and answer calls with voice commands. Texting is something that you shouldn’t be doing in your vehicle.

Here Speedy Collision shares a tip on What to do when you are in a Collision:

When experiencing a collision, sometimes life can become very stressful and overwhelming when you were least expecting it to.

Sometimes they can occur when driving conditions are poor, such as when the roads are icy, when there is black ice present, and when there is a snowstorm, or when it is very windy.

When traffic collisions seem to happen so quickly, it can be hard to recall the details later.

The most important thing to do in the case of a traffic collision is to remain calm, although sometimes this is a task that is easier said than done.If someone is hurt, if you think any other driver may be guilty of a Criminal Code offence, such as drunk driving, or if there is significant property damage, you must always call the police.

In the case of an accident, if no one is hurt please try to move your car to the side of the road where it will not obstruct traffic. If your car is not mobile, simply turn on your hazard lights, or use cones, flares, or warning triangles.

At the time that the collision occurs write down as much information as you can about the accident so that you don’t forget it when you are asked to repeat it later. When filing a claim with your local SGI insurance outlet, you will be asked at that time to recall details about the incident. While speaking with the other driver or drivers, if one or more was involved, write down their contact information, such as name, phone number, and address, as well as their insurance broker if applicable, and if there were any witnesses, write down their information as well.If you can, you may sketch the accident, noting the position and directions of the cars, or use a disposable camera if you have one.

Though it can be difficult and stressful being in a car accident, remember that these accidents can and do happen to anyone.Always be vigilant and watchful of unsafe road conditions, and do not drive if you do not feel comfortable doing so.If you are involved in a collision, please call SGI.Once SGI has done all the preliminary paperwork, Maaco can help you with all your collision repairs and needs. Please call us at Maaco Collision Repair and Auto Painting at 306-653-5655, or simply bring your car down to the shop at 659 51st St E and we’ll handle the concerns of your vehicle. We can’t prevent an accident, but we can make your vehicle look like one never happened.

Here Speedy Collision shares a tip on Icy Road Conditions:

This time of year, road conditions-in Saskatoon and rural Saskatchewan-can be very icy and sometimes, it can even be tough to walk on the road without slipping and falling. Imagine what being on the road with a car is like! A car is both fragile and rugged. One wrong move on an icy road without the proper winter tires might have you in a fender-bender (or the ditch), but as well, a car must be winterized to survive in harsh winter weather conditions.

Driving on interchanges require extra-special attention and focus while driving, because these often get salted and sanded less frequently than other main roads. While driving on main roads, such as the downtown core, that are often frequented by pedestrians, take extra care and go slowly in these areas, as these are often the iciest of areas. Sometimes leaving a few minutes early for work in the morning will get you ahead of the morning traffic rush, but sometimes it’s also necessary, for driving slow on icy roads so you’re not in a collision.

When on an icy road, if you feel yourself start to skid, don’t brake and don’t panic. If it is slippery, make sure you pump your brakes, also called “threshold” braking, until you come to a complete stop. Trying to see where black ice is, which is invisible, can be hard to do, so please make an effort to drive slowly and carefully at all times. Remember that if you are in a collision to remain calm. Our next blog will be on what to do when you are in an accident, keep checking back for more great information.
